Why do small dogs need a specific type of harness?

Small dogs don’t necessarily need a specific type of harness, but they do need one that’s tailored to fit, made to evenly distribute pressure, and designed to prevent escapes. Some small dog breeds may have delicate frames or be prone to tracheal issues, so a well-fitted harness can help avoid neck strain, pressure, and injury.

How do you measure a small dog for a harness?

Measure your small dog for a harness by getting chest girth and neck measurements. Use a soft measuring tape to measure around your dog’s chest, just behind the front legs, and measure the neck circumference at the base of your dog’s neck. Compare those measurements to the size guide for the harness you want, sizing up if your dog is in between sizes. When properly adjusted, your dog’s harness should fit snugly, with just enough room for two fingers underneath.

Are step-in harnesses good for small dogs?

Step-in harnesses are usually good for small dogs because they're easy to put on and fasten. They can be especially helpful for dogs who dislike having things pulled over their head. Step-in designs are usually quite comfortable for small pups, too.
