Is this food cooked at all or is it considered raw?

Answer by ChewyJan 03, 2025
Though all ZIWI recipes start with raw ingredients, the finished products themselves are not raw. ZIWI Peak Steam & Dried is gently processed through delicate micro-steaming to create a unique, light, and aerated texture. It is then cut into bite-sized pieces and air-dried to lock in nutrients and remove pathogenic bacteria, resulting in a shelf-stable, nutritious, and safe product.

SO glad I was wrong!!!

My cat is very picky, but he's the light of my life. When it came time to switch his food, I put a lot of time into researching the most nutritious, safest options and was thrilled to find Ziwi. Nutrition is one of the key ways we contribute to our pets' wellbeing and longevity, so it was a relief to no longer need to worry about the quality of his food. Of course, my cat has a different way of expressing his feelings about all that. I was so overeager to have him sample his new food that he turned away completely and every alternative way I prepared it made him more reluctant. I was so disappointed -- not only would I have to find another food, he'd be missing out on one of the best options. But he makes the rules and he wasn't interested in it, so it was safe to leave it out ignored on the counter until donation day at the shelter. Except, it wasn't ignored -- the next morning, I found that my cat had decided to sample Ziwi's chicken & mackerel in his own time and enjoyed a veritable feast of kibble on the countertop. The plastic bag stood no chance (note to self: put this in a container that requires thumbs to open!) Furthermore, apparently undeterred by an already full stomach at lunchtime, the cheeky little guy even started pawing at the cabinet I put the bag in. Needless to say, he is now fortunately as much a Ziwi convert as I am and I couldn't be happier. His energy is great, he's more affectionate, his fur is soft without shedding nearly as much as he used to, and his skin is healthy with nary a flake to be seen. For once, this is a kibble we can both be happy with!

I received the Ziwi chicken with whole mackerel recipe dry cat food. This isn’t your ordinary cat food. These are raw ingredients that are gently processed and specially steam dried - they look like dehydrated, bits of protein. Most cats love that! There’s a unique feeding ratio that overall gives your cat less food because it is so nutrient dense. That’s helpful, because the only issue that I have encountered with this product is the price! My current, cat food is high-quality, high protein grain free quality stuff but that bag is 10 pounds for $35. This one bag of 1.8 pounds was about $35! Enough said. Two out of my three cats love it so that’s the review on tastiness. 2 gobble it up & the other is totally uninterested. Overall, I will be using my Ziwi cat food as a topper over their normal dry food. Just a little extra protein for those who like it! That’s always a win.

Dry food is always listed in pounds, but not this food. This food is listed in ounces. Anyone who is used to buying dry cat food would probably not notice that this is only 1.81 pounds of food because of the $35 price. Your brain assumes that it's a 28 pound bag, not 28 ounces. With 30 rescue cats, I can't afford $35 for 1 pound of food. I just wanted to make sure that no one else orders food they can't afford. I gave it 3 stars because the cat I ordered it for will not eat it. He has digestive issues and refuses all wet foods. The canned Ziwi Peak cleared up digestive issues in another one of my cats a few years back so I was hoping the dry version would help this one. He has no interest in it. It doesn't help that the pieces are about 2.5 times the size of his usual food. All cats are different so your cats might love it, if you can afford the hefty price tag.

Cat likes it; owner not so much. Very disappointed that this company who I used to think highly of, has gone the way of the low quality, corrupt (IMO) pet food companies who add these inappropriate for cats ingredients. They are somewhat low on ingredient list but if you know how the ingredients in dry pet food are generally listed (such as lumping ingredients before moisture has been removed with those already dry) those that appear before the fat source are usually more plentiful than those listed after. Fortunately, my nearly 17 year old cat is extremely healthy and eats primarily wet food; less than a tablespoon per day of dry is added so I don't think this food will negatively impact heart health. Still disappointed!

good but so dang expensive

My cat, who won't convert to raw like my other 3, loves this kibble. The ingredients are mostly acceptable imo except for the peas, lentils, and quinoa. Cat food companies load up products with completely inappropriate ingredients and call it good for cats, who are obligate carnivores. I digress. I look for the least egregious, low carb kibble I can find that my cat will eat and tolerate, and this is working out so far after Dr Elseys took out egg and added hydrolyzed pork and my cat started puking, like many others I read on reviews (that or diarrhea). Raising prices and cheapening the product, the American corporate way :-(, with consequences for our beloved pets. Sigh. She only gets 1/8 cup per day along with some sprinkled on her wet food, so price wise it's manageable for me. If you can afford it, it's probably one of the better options for kibble on the market.

I have two cats for 10 years. They have never eaten all of their food at once. They grazed. I feed them twice a day. The older one was vomiting after eating, so I changed the food after doing some homework, and both of my cats eat every morsel at once in the morning and evening. It smells really strong of mackerel, but it is worth it to see how much they enjoy it, and that my older girl is no longer vomiting.

This food is near perfect. Pretty clean ingredients, great size kibble for automatic feeders, resealable bag, and our cat loves it. The price is a little steep which hurts but quality costs more. I'm willing to pay the price for foods for him that don't have a bunch of harmful ingredients in them, including brands that claim "natural" or "vet recommended". Like I said, this one isn't perfect, but it's one of the cleanest I found and had great levels in the nutritional areas. We mix this with two other kibbles to balance the nutrition out.

My picky cat loves the stuff

I have 2 Siberians. One is a ginger who’ll eat anything. Then there’s the black cat He is extremely picky and prefers dry. No matter what I do he wants crunchy. He adores the and will also eat the wet, but it’s got to be the lamb and mackerel flavor. I’ve tried every cat food. You could shake a stick at including Smalls.

My cat is extremely picky when it comes to food. I found this in our local pet store one day (way more expensive in store btw, about 20 dollars more) and after looking up its grading online I decided to give it a go. Big mistake on my part cause my cat is now obsessed. She will scream and scream and scream for some, right at 5am lol. Amazing stuff, they really care for their customers and if your cat is anything like mine they’ll love it!
