Would this food be a good replacement for a cat with digestive issues that result in loose stool or is there another you’d recommend?

Answer by WendyNov 29, 2025
Try adding psyllium husk to any wet food. It's a prebiotic fiber that will help firm up loose stool. Also try adding daily probiotics to your cats diet. Always start new food and supplements slowly. Ask your vet too. Good luck.

Are the bones fully grounded? Thank you.

Answer by ChewyOct 13, 2018
On average, 3% finely ground bone is included in each recipe.

Is this only fresh animals and not diseased or sickened animals? No other meat than what it is supposed to be..ie. lamb or chicken, beef? Have you had any recalls?

Answer by ChewyFeb 20, 2019
ZiwiPeak chooses to only source from humane, ethical and sustainably managed local farms that exceed the strict New Zealand government regulatory standards.

Why are the vitamins and minerals different in the Chicken formula compared to the Lamb, or any of the other canned flavors? For instance, dipostassium phosphate and magnesium sulfate are not in any of the other flavors. Neither is dl-methionine.

Answer by ChewyDec 17, 2018
Different meats will contain different vitamin and mineral content so these may or may not have to be added, depending on the main ingredients used, to make the food complete and balanced.

My cats’ food was discontinued by the manufacturer. I have tried a ton of different brands- to no avail. Then I found Ziwi Peak. Two of my three cats will eat this. It is expensive- but I don’t mind- except for one thing. Every case I have ordered lately has badly dented cans. One case only had 4 usable cans. Chewy cheerfully sent a replacement. That case only had one dented can! I consider that a win! That said, today my cats ran out of food- no problem, the new case arrived from Chewy today. Four cans were badly dented and unusable. It seems like every case arrives with unusable cans and I can’t count on having food for my cats. Plus it is getting VERY expensive not being able to feed every can in the case. I guess I will have to continue to try different brands which means mutiny and more kitty hunger strikes.

I ordered the chicken recipe for my cat. When the food arrived, the ingredients on the can show that it contains dispotassium phosphate and flaxseed flakes, both of which are not listed as being present in the ingredients for the product details online here. Cats are obligate carnivores and they can have adverse health reactions to the addition of plant ingredients - flaxseed, which also absorbs water out of the gut. If you have a cat with idiopathic cystitis this can trigger a flare up! And it’s not listed on the online ingredients!! Additionally, part of why I wanted to buy this food is because the ingredients online show there was no PHOSPHATE - but the cans I received actually do have in the ingredients as containing dicalcium phosphate. For cats with kidney disease excess phosphorus is unsafe for their health. Very unhappy. I’ve been mislead.

Variable food quality recently

Be aware of lot# PFNZ2:2238B:15643 products. I got two cans with spoiled food in them from a box of 12 cans. I have been feeding my cat with Ziwi canned cat food for almost two years, and I was happy with their products until recently (purchased on Jan. 3rd, 2020) I got two bad cans of chicken flavor within a box of 12 cans. As you can see from the picture attached, one can is pink with a desirable smell even I want to eat but the other can is dark yellow with a horrible smell of spoiled chicken. Both the pink good one and bad one were from the same box. I throw away the bad can immediately. There was another can went bad too. There's no damage or leakage from the outside but food inside went bad. I have contacted Ziwi and the representative claimed that a little color change is normal and smell might vary from batches to batches. Firstly, I wouldn't call this "a little" secondly, I know what bad food smells like, and finally, with this price, I am expecting way better quality than spoiled food :/. I won't purchase this flavor for a while until they can make their food quality consistently good.

I have been buying this food for my cats for about 4 years now. My cat's don't eat this exclusively, I buy several other brands to keep options diverse. I believe its good for their digestive systems to not eat the same thing everyday. I really love most the ingredients Ziwi puts in their products, EXCEPT FOR: the chickpeas and the huge, cooked bone shards! For heaven's sake, take out the chickpeas and either use bone broth or grind those bones down... Then the product would be perfect. But my cats like it as a different option, so I do still give it to them on and off. And when I do, I have to spend a few minutes picking through it to get out the biggest bone shards I can find before feeding... which is very annoying to have to do!

Good list of ingredients & tasty

Ziwi Peak is one of the few foods that doesn't contain gums, carrageenan, or any of their (just as bad) substitutes like agar-agar or clay. I love the short ingredients

Ziwi Peak is one of the few foods that doesn't contain gums, carrageenan, or any of their (just as bad) substitutes like agar-agar or clay. I love the short ingredients list and love how there are several sources of meat towards the top of the ingredients list. We used to feed our cats the lamb flavor of Ziwi Peak but they weren't fans of the flavor. I am so happy that they came out with a chicken recipe. The pate is rather stiff so I always mix it with 2 tbsp of hot water to soften it up and add more moisture. My cats ate it all up which makes me so so so happy! I would love to see Ziwi Peak add a turkey recipe!

After educating myself on the differences in cat diets I decided to try Ziwi Peak. I’ve thoughts about raw and feel this is just a step below. I wasn’t sure how Abbey would react to switching food however, as soon as I opened the can she was circling the can like a shark lol. As I began serving it she stole a piece and ran off with it because she couldn’t wait to have some. She loves it! As soon as I opened the can, I could tell a huge difference in texture and appearance. There are no vegetables and the texture is that of cooked ground chicken. I will definitely stick with this

My cat loves the rabbit and lamb formula; however, I'm getting extremely concerned with how large the pieces of bone are and how sharp they are. It's starting to resemble pieces of glass and I spend forever picking them out because I'm afraid it's going to cause her more digestive woes. I understand it's there for calcium, but for what we pay, the company could crush it up better like they used to. See the pics and compare to the size of my fingers. This is wrong on so many levels.

The best nutrition you can buy in a can

I researched so may foods for my new kitty. I knew I was gonna feed wet food because it’s superior to kibble because of the moisture content. This is quite expensive

I researched so may foods for my new kitty. I knew I was gonna feed wet food because it’s superior to kibble because of the moisture content. This is quite expensive but heads above every other food on the market. Even looking at homemade frozen food, this is still better than any I’ve found. This is actually the only food I’ve found without seed oils. My cat loves all the flavors, though all are not easy to find. So I set up a subscription for lamb, venison and chicken variety pack. I also buy the Tuft & Paw rabbit stew which is also very good but it’s expensive too. His menu consists of both. For me, the $ is worth it.

I have fed my cat Ziwi Peak for many years with no problems. After Ziwi Peak was sold in late 2021, I started noticing some changes, but I believed it was still good food. Four days ago my cat vomited up his food and I pulled 6 small pieces of bone out of the food. The longest two pieces were 7 mm, the other 4 pieces ranged from 3-5 mm. My cat stopped eating and drinking, and ended up in a Pet Emergency Clinic. The vets considered the bone pieces to be too large to be in cat food, and my cat had to start antibiotics in case a bacterial infection was setting in where the bones damaged my cat's digestive tract. For the past 4 days, my cat has been able to eat or drink very little.

As soon as I opened the can 5 cats were very interested and ready to eat, so apparently they loved the smell. They all gobbled it up. But the finicky, spoiled creatures they are, by about the fourth can, it was like no big deal. But they do eat it and it's good to have on hand. I have to keep offering them something different when it comes to canned food. Actually, because of the price I'm glad it's not the only thing they will eat!
