FAQ

Zenrelia (ilunocitinib tablets)

Zenrelia is a prescription medication that relieves itching in dogs due to allergic dermatitis and helps control atopic dermatitis. The active ingredient, ilunocitinib, reduces the inflammatory response in your dog's skin caused by allergies, making your dog feel less itchy.

Once-daily Tablet

Zenrelia comes in an oral tablet that’s given once a day with or without food. It's easy to fit into your dog's daily routine. Always follow your veterinarian’s instructions.

Prescription Only

Zenrelia is a prescription itch relief medication for dogs at least 12 months of age. Ask your veterinarian if Zenrelia can help get your dog back to normal itching levels. They will evaluate your dog’s symptoms and determine the right tablet.

Dogs should not take Zenrelia for a time period before and after vaccination. Discuss your dog’s vaccine schedule with your veterinarian.

Signs of Allergic Dermatitis in Dogs

The most common sign of allergic dermatitis is excessive itching. Your dog might also bite or lick the itchy skin. Although symptoms might start as mild, they can progress to conditions such as hair loss and skin infection.

WARNING: VACCINE-INDUCED DISEASE AND INADEQUATE IMMUNE RESPONSE TO VACCINES. Based on results of the vaccine response study, dogs receiving Zenrelia are at risk of fatal vaccine-induced disease from modified live virus vaccines and inadequate immune response to any vaccine. Discontinue Zenrelia for at least 28 days to 3 months prior to vaccination and withhold Zenrelia for at least 28 days after vaccination. Dogs should be up to date on vaccinations prior to starting Zenrelia. Do not use in dogs less than 12 months old or dogs with a serious infection. Dogs should be monitored for the development of infections because Zenrelia may increase the chances of developing an infection. Neoplastic conditions (benign and malignant) were observed during clinical studies. The most common side effects were vomiting, diarrhea and tiredness. Zenrelia has not been tested in dogs used for breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs and has not been evaluated in combination with glucocorticoids, cyclosporine, or other immune suppressive drugs.

My poor girl is a gsd who has suffered from allergies since she was 2. She’s allergic to most proteins, grass, dust, human skin cells, you name it she’s probably allergic. We tried every single medication from steroids, cytopoint, apoquil, allergy testing and shots, special foods, and then our last resort (or so i thought) atopica which for a 80lb dog was upwards of 460$ A MONTH and after time that stopped working. Finally my vet told me about this medication, the black box warning kinda freaked me out but after some research we decided to try it. And it’s been a MIRACLE DRUG. My girl went from itching and licking 80% of the time she was awake to minor itching a couple times a day max. She went from being miserable and seemingly acting like her age, to a 9 year old with the energy and zoomies of a puppy. If your pup is struggling like mine was I can’t recommend this enough, thank you for giving my girl her spark back!

Thor’s skin was a mess all over with large welts, bright red bumpy rashes on his belly, ear infections and constant scratching. He even lost hair around his mouth due to gnawing his skin constantly. Today, his skin has healed, his coat is healthy and shinny, he can rest peaceably and he even gained weight with no changes in amount of daily food given. He has no side effects either. From this I know he was suffering with the allergies that caused his skin infections and constant itching. His vet prescribed zenrelia medication that totally changed him to a very happy and healthy dog. It’s worth every penny! Shout out to Quad Cities Animal Hospital in Tuscumbia, AL! Wonderful vets and staff!! Sincerely, Chris H.

We have a Frenchie and have spent the last two years battling his allergies, shots, apoqel, allergy testing, food sensitivity test, all natural limited food diets, mediated baths etc. Finally after all the trails and errors we found a dermatologist close to us. After she did her first round of treatment and no improvement she finally prescribed Zenrella. Our Bubba is now itch free and his skin looks amazing. We are sticking to his Stella freeze dried fish blend diet, and still do a medicated bath once every two weeks now.

Believe me when I tell you that we tried EVERYTHING for my dog’s allergies, including apoquel, injections, OTC allergy medications, changing up her food. She still constantly itched at her eyes and licked her paws (before photo of her losing the hair around her eyes.) I was so frustrated and sad that my baby girl was so uncomfortable. I did a ton of research and decided to ask my vet about Zenrelia. Within two days we had completely different dog and >90% of her symptoms had resolved. We will have to wean her off for vaccines in the allergy off season but otherwise have nothing negative to say about this medication. Zenrelia is the best!! Pictured is my dog here happy and itch free!!

Y'all have the nicest phone reps :) This new Rx for itching has made a huge difference for Blue - paw licking & tummy so red - just awful. Benedryl helped for a while but doping my dog multiple times a day was not ok. Vet suggested still giving it 2x a day (2 each dose) but I am not doing that - the Zenrelia is working for my 100 lb baby & doesn't knock him out all day. The Rx I was given said to give 2x a day but 1x has been working for Blue. Hopefully, for other dogs too - it's $$$ if given 2x daily.

This medicine has literally been a miracle for my dog Appa!! He used to have *horrible* allergies year round. My poor boy was allergic to just about everything, his eyes were always puffy and he would itch himself raw and bloody and was just so, so miserable. We tried everything to help him. Monthly shots, benadryl, food restrictions, sensitive formula baby detergent on his blankets, supplements, anti-itch shampoo, cbd oil, etc... But he's been on zenrelia for a few months now and he's like a whole new pup :) He isn't itchy or miserable AT ALL anymore and we were actually able to switch him over from really expensive allergy food to normal dog food!! This was huge for a food motivated dog that literally couldn't have any fun treats before now. He's able to enjoy life and snacks and be the crazy three year old that he is. He has gained a wee bit of weight since starting this med, but honestly that could just be from the cheese tax / snacks that he can finally indulge in now lol, so I'm not sure if thats a side effect of the med itself. I seriously can't recommend this med enough, it has completely changed his life for the better <3

Seems to work better than apoquel

My pit is 6 1/2 years old and has been on apoquel for 6 years. Apoquel controlled it to a point but never really stopped him from digging and biting at his skin. He always had red skin, at times even scabs but so far since he has been on Zenrelia his skin looks a lot better, hardly red at all and I have not noticed any scabs in the pits of is front legs. He has only been on Zenrelia a month and he looks better than he has in six years.

My dog has had horrible allergies and an overgrowth of yeast all over her body for the past few years. Me and my Vet tried everything, steroids, creams, shampoos, anti fungal pills, etc. She started Zenrelia about a month and a half ago and it has been a huge lifesaver. The photos speak for themselves!

We have spent thousands of dollars treating our 13 lb Shih Tzu Bane with no avail. He’s been on Apaquil for years, shots, etc. , until now! His skin cleared, no more itching or licking and the corn flake smell is going away. I realize each dog responds differently to different medications. Nothing against Apaquil, but if your furbaby isn’t responding well to it, give this a try.

My dog Toby was on Apoquel for Pruritis and Environmental Allergies for 2 years, the first 1 1/2 years it worked fairly well, maybe 65%, enough to keep him from scratching til he bled. And because this was the only medication of this type in pill form, it was good enough. But 6 months ago Apoquel stopped working. (He started becoming nauseated every morning, very lethargic all day. Red belly and skin, scratching, licking, rubbing his eyebrows til they bled, slimy phlegm in his eyes, welts on his skin, etc ... He just looked miserable.) I took my boy into the Vet as I had heard of Zenrelia and wanted to give it a try. I asked to put him on less than what would normally be prescribed for his weight, immune suppressors kind of scare me and he is quite sensitive to drugs. Toby weighs 14 pounds so the Vet prescribed half of a 6.4 pill once daily. I noticed a difference in his itching at day 2! This is day 14, I can't believe the difference this stuff has made in his skin, his energy level and his mental well-being! His skin has completely healed, he plays like a puppy again, (he's 4 yrs old) his eyes are bright and no longer have phlegm in them. He has no nausea, isn't throwing up anymore. Best of all, he has completely lost his itch! He hasn't scratched in days!!!! I am so thrilled to see him feeling so much better. Poor dog would hide in his crate when his itching was really bad. I can't say enough about Zenrelia. If your dog is on Apoquel and it's not helping as much as you would like, definitely try this drug. It could change their lives for the better.
