...Healthy is not! With a carbohydrate content of 23% DMB, sodium of 1.54% DMB, and cranberries in the ingredients, this otherwise promising low-phosphorus food is very problematic. Cranberries contain benzoic acid, which cats do not have the pathways to metabolize and it could build up to toxic levels in them if they are eating foods with cranberry at every meal over a prolonged time period. Cats with CKD are particularly at risk, both because they have a harder time eliminating waste from their bloodstream, and because the cranberry is too acidifying for them when they are already prone to developing metabolic acidosis. Cats, in general, do best with a diet of 10% carbohydrates or less. This amount is approaching the amount in kibble; though, some dry food will contain even 2 to 3x that amount of carbs. The protein is slightly lower than optimal and probably part of how they're able to keep it with such low phosphorus levels which is rare for non-prescription, non-renal diet foods. Keep in mind this food is not appropriate for kittens or even young cats of some breeds who are still growing because it is not enough phosphorus for them. It could be a good occasional food to rotate in for Senior cats and cats with compromise kidneys. Think of it as a junk food treat, not a healthy indulgence!

I have a cat with CKD, and keeping weight on her is tough. I started to supplement her diet with a pouch of the Wellness morsels, and she hoovers it down along with her dry food (Yes I know dry food isn't optimal in a general sense, but you do what you have to do to keep them eating, and to get a bit of weight back on them.) and has put on a little weight as a result. This food is allowing me to give her the best possible life for however long she's with me, and I'm grateful. Why did I choose it? Because it's lower in phosphorus and protein than most other non-prescription diets. The best food you can feed a CKD cat is one they will eat, and with this, she's eating eagerly, she's more active (The Zoomies are back) and she looks better.

This is a nice, low phosphorus, medium protein option for CKD kitties. As you will know if you have one, they can be quite finicky, and the options are limited [flavors and textures] in the prescription formulas. Tanya's CRF site maintains a list of OTC foods that are lower in phosphorus and protein [and other elements]. My 18 yr old CKD kitty likes it and has permitted me to add it to her rotation of acceptable foods.

Low Phosphorus Food Cat Actually Enjoys

My cat with kidney disease has gained more of an appetite since starting a new medication. Unfortunately lately I seem to be throwing away more of her prescription food than she is actually eating. She'll eat prescription food reluctantly but bugs have become a problem in the summer months. I can't leave her food sitting out for hours and she isn't much on reheated meals either. I was looking for something lower in phosphorus she liked. Luckily she seems to love this stuff! I would rather have her on the prescription diet but this seems to be the next best thing. The chunks are bigger but my old girl is able to eat it despite her teeth problems. I wish they had more low phosphorus foods in diferent flavors and textures to stimulate her appetite even more. I will say I find pouches a bit more messy than cans but I have no problem getting the product out. I just squeeze it from the bottom up like a toothpaste tube. The other thing I've noticed is a lack of vomiting. This may be due more to the medication but I haven't had to clean up any messes since these changes.

I have an 18 y/o CKD cat, who has so far rejected every single prescription diet (we're still on that hunt). So I was looking for a low phosphorus wet food that we could feed her while we work out her prescription diet. This has been a HUGE hit! I have never seen her so excited for food even back in her healthy days. She never used to wake me up for breakfast, but now she is. The chunks are on the larger side, and she is missing a tooth so I have to smash the pieces down a bit so it's easier for her to eat. When you open up the package is smells like chicken, not some disgusting vague meat smell which so many other cat foods have. It's pricey, but any owner with a finicky CKD cat knows how hard it can be to get a cat to eat, so this is well worth the cost. Love, love, love!

We appreciate the better quality of the ingredients and like that for the sake of healthier kidneys the phosphorus level of this food is on the lower end of the scale. Our feleuk kitty, Chewy, who can be finicky, really likes it. We're glad we discovered it.

Our cats like these pouches, and as others have mentioned, I love that this food is lower in phosphorus than most others out there. A few reviewers have said the morsels are too big- and I agree. And a few have said it is hard to get the food out of the pouches. Here is how I work around those things.... First, I just knead the pouch for a minute (before opening) and smush up the chunks. That’s the nice thing about the pouches vs a can, you can mush up the chunks easily by kneading the pouch. I also take a spoonful or two of warm water, and after opening, I stir it into the pouch and then pour it the food out. The little extra water thins the food just enough where it comes out of the pouch easier- and makes more gravy, which my cats seem to like. Hope these tips help!

I started buying this after a lot of research on foods for cats with kidney disease. My big senior cat has the start of kidney disease and I’ve been trying to feed him with the lowest phosphorus food I can find. This is on the lower end of non-rx foods. Tests have shown that his disease has not progressed in the past year, which is good news. I don’t think these pouches are supposed to be used as the main food in a cat’s diet, so we rotate them in with some other foods to try to give them balanced nutrition. They love these the best, though, and get very excited when the pouches come out!

Anyone who has treated a cat with kidney failure/disease knows the up and down daily battle of getting them to eat. Prescription foods never appealed to any of mine. This Wellness in the POUCH is low in phosphorus - which cats in KCF require because their kidneys cannot process that out as efficiently anymore. Knock wood, it does keep his interest. My only wish is that it would have more juice and maybe a little less of the morsels. But I'm glad Wellness recognizes many cats over 10 years of age have some type of kidney issue so we're very happy with it.

My 17-year-old cat was recently diagnosed with kidney disease. He's also become a picky eater in his old age. He doesn't particularly like the prescription food so I found a list of non-prescription foods that had lower levels of phosphorous and protein. This is one of the options and, so far, it's one of the few he will reliably eat. I wish it came in cans instead of the pouches (it's hard to make sure you got all the food out) but I can't argue with the cranky old man. He loves this stuff.
