Questions & Answers

9 Customer Questions

Where is this product made?

Answer by ChewyOct 14, 2022
This recipe is made in the USA. Wellness ingredients are primarily sourced from North America. WellPet has one of the most strict sourcing criteria of any pet food manufacturer. All ingredient suppliers, whether domestic or international, need to meet certified nutrient levels and be manufactured in quality audited facilities. While there are many high quality ingredients available in the U.S., in some cases there is not a readily available U.S. supply. For example, the Venison, Lamb, Rabbit and Salmon Meal are sourced internationally from New Zealand, Australia, Italy and Chile respectively. WellPet feels that they have the appropriate quality programs in place at all their vendor locations and feel safe and secure with all the ingredients they source, whether they are sourced locally or globally.

Truman is a shelter rescue, he was in pretty bad shape when he came home to me. He was in renal failure, half of his teeth were pulled from his lower jaw due to decay and he had been rejected twice before he came home to me. I have heard the horror stories about how cats reject their renal diet for a multitude of reasons. He gets his renal diet mixed approximately 1 to 3 with Wellness Complete Health Chicken & Herring Formula. He has been on this mix for 2 years and continues to eat well. He has gone from 7 1/2 pounds to a little over 8 pounds, his fur mats and dry, itchy skin has cleared up and he looks forward to feeding time.

I don’t know what happened but I thoroughly am convinced that something is not quite right that suddenly happened with this food. Not only did my cat stop liking it, it made him sick. As soon as I went back to another food he was fine. I then retested giving it to him and bang diarrhea again. He never had a problem before with this food before . I sent it back to chewy and they were cooperative about it but let’s face it sometimes there are bad batches and it’s super important to let chewy know. Cats can’t speak but they sure will let you know when something is off.

My cat was wasting away on a vet recommended diet for early kidney failure. I watched his muscle mass slowly disappear. He always had bowel trouble and ate canned pumpkin to help but it became worse on the kidney stuff. He started having other problems and the amount of meds was ridiculous. I read a post on an animal board that recommended looking into wasting on a protein free diet (which is the kidney stuff). It recommended getting grain free protein. Without checking with the vet I decided to take a chance and stopped all meds and put my cat on this food. I did this for 4 months then took my cat in to the vet and explained everything. My vet had not heard of this food and was thrilled with my cats' lab results. He needed to go back on one medication but nothing for the constipation since this has so much fluid in it. My cat stayed on this for 3 years until his death at age 20. This food was a lifesaver for me. Highly recommend!!

Wellness makes a good canned food for cats. I would buy it much more often if they would remove the carrageenan. My cats especially love their canned chicken. I just gave them the chicken and herring and they really loved it. They ate it right away and wanted more. It is a high calorie food, 189 calories in a 5.5 oz. can. I only give them fish once a week or ten days. Fish is not a natural food for them. They originated in no. Africa where water sources are rare and cats get their water from the prey animals which are about 70% water. So they do not drink much water and should not be fed much dry food. Only 20% or so. I just emailed Wellness to make sure they do not source any ingredients from China, including vitamines and minerals which a lot of companies do. I also asked them if they use cans with BPA. Both carrageenan and BPA in cans are thought to be possible causes of cancer. I hope more and more of us will go on companies web sites find their e-mail addresses and ask questions. Quite often the 5.5 oz cans are free of BPA while the larger cans do. The larger cans are of course a better price.

My 4 kitties love this food, even my finicky one (Angelica pictured below)...it has LOTS of moisture and and a good amount of protein. I have an overweight senior kitty with only 4 teeth, so finding food for her is challenging (except she LOVES any brand, flavor, very lucky about that!!! dry food is a challenge because of her teeth, I feed both kinds and she'll eat it even if it's difficult for her to chew) but as far as water for kidneys, easy to eat, not too much protein for her age, this is perfect...then there's my finicky one who turns her nose up at alot, but she likes this and turkey & salmon the most..she'll eat chicken & lobster too, but leaves and comes back to it.. for some strange reason doesn't like plain turkey or plain chicken flavor in this brand though? the other 2 are easy to please usually will eat a variety of foods..we love Chewy.com!

Saying "Good-bye" to Wellness Cat Food

As a trainer of animals for film and live performance, I have literally thousands of hours of training into each of my furbabies. So I care deeply about what I

As a trainer of animals for film and live performance, I have literally thousands of hours of training into each of my furbabies. So I care deeply about what I feed as it directly translates into how long my kitties are able to brighten my life by being the shining stars that they are. While I've supplemented my own homemade foods with Wellness foods for over a decade, this order will be my last as I feel Wellness has not keep pace with the trend to provide locally sourced, additive-free foods in BPA-free cans. After much research, I've switched to Lotus Pet Foods canned pate made with absolutely no processing aids like carrageenan, guar or xanthan gum, provided in BPA-free cans. My kitty crew tried a 6-can sample pack Lotus sent me for free after I emailed them. The result: even my most finicky cat - Major Mia Muffin - ate whatever flavor I put in front of her, including Rabbit, Pork and Venison, like it would be her very last meal - something that NEVER happened with Wellness or ANY of the other more expensive brands that I've tried! For dry (which I feed free choice) I've switched to Dr. Elsey's Clean Protein (yes, the same Dr. Elsey's that makes Precious Cat kitter), for their super high-protein (59%), low-carb kibble because cats are not meant to eat the grain, vegetable and fruit fillers found in most all cat foods. What you'll find is your cat's hunger is satisfied with far, far less Clean Protein than any other dry food you've tried, because your cat will FINALLY be getting enough protein in his/her diet. So if the health and longevity of your 4-legged love ones is as important to you as mine are to me, I challenge you to compare the labels of your current wet and dry foods with those I've recommended and make your own decision. You'll thank yourself multiple times over with a pet who will be around to love you back for a long, long time.

I’m simply not sure about this brand anymore

I used to trust the wellness plan 100%. I don’t know recently what happened but I had seven sick cats and it got quite expensive and the only thing that was similar was their food diet. Their vet, ran tests and the only thing she could conclude was the food. The symptoms stopped within the day when we abruptly stopped feeding the brand. My seven range in age from five months old to 17 years, so they didn’t all get sick at the same time on the same day what happened was my two elderly cats got affected first, then my kitten, then my cats from 2 to 3 years old. But it wasn’t hard to connect the dots when I thought about what the similarities were. All of that said I absolutely don’t blame chewy, it makes me wonder what’s going on at the manufacturing level or what’s happening in transit. It’s really a shame this day and age you think you can trust the name for quality but at the end of the day it all boils down to how it’s cared for after. I suppose it could have been a bad batch.

I have fed my cats Wellness for at least 20 years and, for the 2 cats I have now, I would always buy the large cans. Over the past year or two I noticed the consistency to be different, almost gritty-like with a heavy amount of gelatin on the top. The smell also became off putting, not only to me, but also my cats. One cat would only eat it slowly for survival, oftentimes not finishing, and the other one that eats anything would try burying his plate after he finished. I did try contacting Wellness once, but they said nothing changed. I figured it would eventually show up in reviews, and I have since seen that some people have said it’s an issue with the larger cans only. I don’t know if that’s true because I never bought the smaller cans because I read that well after I switched them to a different brand of food, which they both love.

This particular Wellness selection has been given to our cats for over 4 years. It was originally, highly recommended by an employee at a large pet supply retailer's local store. The oldest, most dominate feline (thinks he's a real "Alpha" male!) immediately devoured this selection like a wild animal (didn't risk putting my hands anywhere close to his "plate" out of fear his "talons" would have to be surgically removed from my hands!). All the cats like this. The one stray we adopted has developed a finicky "Morris the Cat" attitude toward any other selection. While he'll eat his first helping of Wellness Turkey "Formula," he'll snub any additional helpings, obviously objecting to NOT getting his "Chicken/Herring" (and this is the guy who would lick up the smallest, the tiniest morsel of ANY food, the second those morsels hit the floor). Highly recommended.

Recieved severly crushed cans. Both flats looked like someone stomped on them. Contacted Chewy and was told to ship them back. We requested a return label and they said one would be send out. We never received a label. Sent another email asking again for a label and again was told one would be shipped out. We never received a label and are now stuck with unsafe cat food. Very disappointed in the quality drop of both the product and service from Chewy.
