Will this keep blackbirds away? I’m having a terrible time with them running off all my birds.

Answer by ChewyJul 25, 2019
This bird food will not keep black birds away. It is recommended to keep away foods such as bread, corn, millet, wheat and sunflower seeds to not attract black birds.

let's say 3.5 stars. decent seed, good price, and the birds appear to love it based on how quickly i need to refill (though i found that alone it attracted way more house sparrows who bullied the finches away, after mixing with wagner's greatest variety the finches have returned and hopefully will stick around). but there is so much debris in the bag, just a ton of sticks and twigs (.5"-2.5" long) and other woody chunks that clog up the feeders' ports and drainage holes. i've been trying to pick out the garbage as i pour but that really makes refilling the feeders a chore and takes too much time. wish they sifted out the inedible junk before packaging. plus where did it all come from? would also be nice if wagner made their large bags of seeds resealable like their small ones.

I've been buying these yummy seeds for a couple of years now; finches, catbirds, sparrows, cardinals, and the dratted morning doves love them and will often finish a whole cylinder in less than one day. However, the last few bags I purchased have had a lot more twigs and bits of wood :( The other "debris" problem I have is not Wagner's fault or Chewy's: the shells really accumulate and get stuck everywhere, and my downstairs neighbors have escalated their complaints so I will likely have to switch to a shelled bird food :(

These seeds have been radiated so they won’t grow when planted. I give my chickens black oil sunflower seeds directly, but also like to sprout them for a highly nutritious chicken feed, and enjoy throwing them around the yard to grow small sunflowers anywhere they’ll come up. It brings me so much joy. Not these seeds though! Not one has ever sprouted and I couldn’t figure out why until I found out they are radiated now to prevent them from being plantable. Not only is that gross and rude, but I don’t want to feed my pets food that has been radiated. They should have to state that on the bag and it’s wrong that they don’t. Very sneaky. The price has also skyrocketed recently. I switched to another brand.

I raised a grey squirrel from the day he was born and he’s been released almost a year. So I have to feed him and with him comes all his buddies. Let’s be honest feeding just peanuts is very expensive. They love these sunflower seeds. Some of my squirrels prefer them over peanuts. Plus the finches, red birds and just about every other birds love them. So my yard is full of wildlife

The seeds are great. The birds will love them. Chewy should find another delivery service because I'm FED UP WITH FED X !!!! I have filed two complaints with the BBB and spoken to numerous people at FED X. It's always the same: Oh, I forgot to inform the driver....or it's a part-time driver... CAN'T FED X DRIVERS READ? They have a DELIVERY MANAGER section on the FED X website that gives drivers clear instructions about customer package delivery instructions. as well as a scanner on board the trucks that shows the instructions. My drivers blatantly lie...they say package are delivered to the front porch - when clearly the photos they take themselves show my packages alongside the road in the weather...or RIGHT UNDERNEATH a sign that I hung on my arbor requesting that they walk another 20 feet to my covered front porch...What do FED X Drivers dob? They put the packages right under my sign!! But I digress...Buy these seeds but pray they come by some delivery service other than FED X!!

I have bought this brand of black oil sunflower seed twice. There is a lot of cut up stems and scrap material in the bag. The last purchase had considerably more trash in it. This brand is more expensive! You would think that you are paying for a better product. No. I wouldn’t mind paying more if I were not getting half a bag of scrap! Not only am I paying for scrap but those chopped up stems clog up the bird feeder. I have to go out and try to shake the trash out of the openings of the feeder that have a build up of these dried chopped up stems. This method of harvesting these seeds for bird food started somewhat over ten years ago. It has gotten increasingly worse. From where do they get these seeds? Why is it that everything becomes lower in quality instead of improved?

FORGET MILLET "MIXES" **THIS** IS WHAT BIRDS WANT TO EAT !

I'm no songbird expert (yet) but after a relatively few years of observation, and basic research I realized practically ALL of the "millet" and other "filler" seed

I'm no songbird expert (yet) but after a relatively few years of observation, and basic research I realized practically ALL of the "millet" and other "filler" seed in the typical bird seed mix winds up UNEATEN (by birds... squirrels still go or it) and rotting either in the feeder or on the ground. Translation - total waste of money. As it turns out - 99% of the birds you'd want to attract to a feeder are going to favor Black Oil Sunflower seed over every other type of seed in a "mix" - the one possible exception is the Finch family, whose favorite is Thistle seeds (but they will also eat black oil sunflower seed). And... Wagner is the best combo of low cost AND cleanest/highest quality bagged seed I've found. YMMV depending where you live - but for us, Wagner beats everything else including bulk from the local Farm/Garden store. We used to buy it at the big orange Box store but Chewy's price is a little lower, AND they bring it to me! Note that "clean" is not 'perfect' - you'll find a few twigs and etc. in the bag, but I bet it's not 1/100 of 1% of the weight. You're paying for and getting good seed from Wagner. But I also grow Mammoth sunflowers around my property and let them dry in-place for the birds.. those also have twigs LOL. Anyway - Black Oil Sunflower seed is what they want - so just buy this, maybe feed a little less than of the "cheap" mix and you'll come out even financially - it's Win-Win for both you and your birds.

I've been feeding black oil sunflower seeds to our backyard birds for years. Normally I buy from our local store but they were out of stock and due to COVID I thought I'd buy online from Chewy. I was shocked to see so much wood pulp when I opened the bag. I'm very disappointed and will not buy Wagner's again. Also, now I'll have to clean out all the wood bits from the bottom of the bird feeder as the birds will not eat that filler. Shame on Wagner for adding weight to the package for profit.

This product came just before we had a big snow storm, I was looking at how to take care of birds in the winter. This bird food won the hearts of few cardinals, and blue jays and many other kinds that I had never seen before. I did my part to help birds survive through this difficult storm we got over 2 feet of snow and it is still piled high. But the birds are happy! They actually came in groups to feed of the likes I had never seen before.
