Questions & Answers

Why do you use "meal" instead of straight chicken, lamb etc? I've read to not use products that say meal for the main ingredient. Thank you. I've been feeding Victor Lamb to my Rott for about 4 months now.

Answer by ChewyDec 25, 2018
Victor uses lamb meal in this dog food because it is a quality source of high protein. Lamb meal is the dry rendered part from lamb tissues, specially prepared for feeding purposes by tanking under live steam or dry rendering. Though the meat has been cooked, dried, and ground, it is still meat, and has not had any blood, hair, hoof, horn, hide trimmings, manure, stomach or rumen contents added to it.

I'm planning of getting the fish or lamb and brown rice. What other ingredients are included. Are there peas, potatoes or corn in it? Would I have to add green beans to it?

Answer by ChewyApr 04, 2019
This formula provides a nutritionally balanced meal and does not contain peas, potatoes, or corn. For a full list of ingredients, click the "Nutritional Info" tab just above the description.

Does this dog food contain Chicken or chicken products? My dog is allergic to chicken and that is why I am asking.

Answer by ChewyJun 21, 2018
This recipe contains chicken fat.

What is blood meal? Why is it used in this food?

Answer by ChewySep 18, 2019
Blood meal is a high protein, low ash, low fat ingredient that provides a strategic source of nutrients and amino acids when used appropriately. Including blood meal in our products maintains protein levels and meets calcium requirements. It is sourced from human-grade meat processed in USDA-approved facilities.Their quality assurance team tests this product before it is accepted to ensure it meets their rigorous quality standards.

I’ve been feeding my dog this brand for several years, and it worked well for him, especially considering his sensitive stomach. However, I’ve noticed a significant decline in VICTOR’s quality control lately. I’ve opened several bags of food that contained obvious pieces from a different pet food. I sent photos directly to VICTOR but never received a response about what the foreign pieces were or why they appeared in multiple bags. Instead, they were uninterested in helping and redirected me to Chewy customer service, where I fortunately received excellent support and a replacement. Despite that, the multiple recalls and alarming posts here about moldy food have made me wary of continuing with this brand. My dog, who hasn’t had stomach issues in years, has experienced severe diarrhea four times in the last six months, which I can only attribute to the decline in quality. It’s disappointing because this food was beneficial for him for a long time. Upon researching VICTOR, I came across numerous concerning reports about their facilities, including water leaking from holes in the roof onto product and salmonella recalls. What used to be a reliable product has clearly changed. I recommend avoiding this brand and exploring alternatives. I recently switched to a similar flavor from Blackwood dog food, and I’ll share my experience with that brand as well. Good luck.

Let me start off with. My dog loves this food. It is only the 3rd food(out of about 16 different recipes/brands we've tried) that hasn't made him itch and will eat every time. He loves it! He has a chicken(protein, not fat), fish/Fmeal, and pork allergy. After about 3 weeks on this food only, his itching became much slower and hopefully will stop soon. Now, maybe this is just a new bag or something, but I ordered this for the second time and the bag looked different. Much shorter. The last bag was taller and held the food more evenly. I ended up popping two holes in the bag when I was carrying it down stairs. Likely because it so full/tight as the bag is shorter. The size of a 30lb bag with 40lbs of food in it...) I carried how I always carry bags of food and this is the only one to have ripped. My last bag also had shiny gold on the Victor logo, the lines, and the lamb silhouette, among other things. That is what every bag of victor I have seen looked like at stores as well. This bag, the victor logo, etc, was all just a tan color. I don't care what the bag looks like as long as the food is good, but I would have expected every bag to look consistently the same unless there was a total change in design. Not a big issue, I would have given it 4.5 stars if i could, but I will do 5 becuase it is a good food and aside from the bag problem it was almost perfect.

Australian Shepherd Approved!

Our sensitive Aussie had some tummy issues when he was about a year old which caused frequent loose stools and for a while he was pretty hesitant to eat at all. We tried a lot of foods grain free, and protein specific but he didn't like any of them and continued to have stool issues. Our vet had him on boiled chicken and rice to get him back to normal but it wasn't until we tried Victor that he got his appetite back. He loves this food and scarfs down every bowl and his stool finally went back to normal in about 3 days. Our Aussie has been on this food for over 6 months now and he hasn't had a single problem ever since. Thank you Victor!

I buy almost all of the varieties of Victor. I have several show dogs. So I have tried most of Victor. The Lamb and Brown Rice is the go to for a dog that is a little underweight duller coat etc. I recently put my 11 year old, who had been on Beef and Brown rice, on the Lamb. To get a shiny coat is quite an accomplishment on an old dog. She is doing so much better. The Brown Rice is a good one as well. But, if you need or want the push, this is the go to. Now they say that both lamb and beef liver are the go to for iron. Perhaps its the iron of lamb that really brings up a compromised dog. While it is about $20.00 more for a bag, it is well worth keeping it on hand to help a dog that needs a lift. The nice thing about Victor is that you can change between the types without any stomach upset.

My dogs ate the lamb meal with brown rice for several years and then it was recalled. We tried various other dog foods which seemed to give them digestive issues as they would try to eat a lot of grass and make themselves vomit. We finally got back to the lamb meal after the recall and now they seem to have some digestive issues with The lamb meal and brown rice since the recall. I don’t know what has changed, but my dogs do not seem to tolerate it as well. I have also tried the lamb meal with sweet potato. Kind of the same issue.

I fed my dog Hi-Standard for about 3 years. It was perfect but the problem was finding the specific blend, 23/16 which was for average dogs. The feedstores that did carry the brand only carried the high performance for working dogs. We always found ours at the Amish feed store. The problem there was no phones! So I would keep my fingers crossed when I was in the area that they’d have it( my family would always clean them out if they did) When the store closed, I was at a loss! I tried many foods. They all either destroyed her digestion (runny poops) or she would break out in rashes and she would have to go to the vet and get meds because she would have an allergic reaction. I hated this because I don’t do meds unless it’s absolutely necessary. My uncle recommended Victor, lamb (she’s allergic to fish). Hands down the best food! Her skin is perfect, poops are great! I am so glad to find this food because I was extremely stressed out while trying different options. My sister uses Victor too, just a different blend. My uncle, who is a hunter, also uses Victor for his dogs. We are a family that relies on each other for dog advice and when something works, we all switch! Cheers to Victor for all their outstanding products!

I found Victor Lamb meal & Brown Rice after another brands confusing labeling had me thinking there was no chicken protein when there was. I feed my GSD Lamb meal and Rice to help with allergies, and skin issues - so far he loves it, his coat shows no dandruff and is regaining its shine & luster, and his poop is healthy. Thanks Victor for making a simple single meat protein source product, with clear accurate labeling.

I have one of those dogs that always seems to get sick when I give him anything off his limited "approved list" of foods. At the beginning of the year his kibble was recalled but I was afraid to change his food. Then it was reccalled again. That was enough for me. I changed him to Victor, pretty much overnight without the ability to introduce it slowly as is normally suggested. I selected the lamb & brown rice recipe and he LOVED it. Best of all, it did not bother his sensitive stomach. I am really pleased and will continue with Victor Foods from now on. It did not disappoint.
