Squirrel quarters are small, so you might need to cut the straw, but this is the best.

I usually buy the smaller size that comes in bags for my outdoor feral shelter in my yard. Two bags does the trick for the one I have. This time I ordered the large box and was disappointed. The quality is not the same as the small bags. The stuff in the bags is fine and lightweight. Easy for someone like me who is disabled to pull apart the pieces and stuff them where needed. The stuff in the box is heavy, kinda dirty, comes with tree branches (see photos)and is compacted into 2 seat cushion-looking type sheets. I don't know if it will dry as quickly as the finer stuff in the bags but rain is due for the rest of the week so I suppose I'll find out. I hope the very picky feral still uses her house after this switch. I will say that if you are doing a bin within a bin feral house the two sheets can easily just be plopped into in-between the bins for insulation. Definitely going back to the bags when winter comes.

I'll be using this for feral cat shelters, so made sure to go through my first bag because those seed heads are bad news for kitties' fur and skin. You can see below what I had to pull out after digging through the straw for 20 minutes, nearly a quarter of the bag. I'm hoping I just got a bag of straw cut from the margins of the field. I appreciate the convenience of the 1 pound bags instead of lugging home a 1/2 bale from the Yard and Garden store, and I want to support a family business. From the outside the other 6 bags I ordered don't look as bad. I'll update if I find that the rest are in better shape.

My cats kept going in their houses while I was trying to get it in there. I laughed so hard because I was worried it would take some time for them to adjust. No problem!!! It’s cold here at night but still warms up during the day. They stay out for a little bit and then right back into the straw Beds. I do not usually write reviews but saw so many talking about a bad oder I didn’t want you getting discouraged and missing out on the happiness it has brought my Ferals. I use this for two cat huts & tiny garden along our back porch. These are feral cats I feed. Currently, the kittens take naps in the straw in the garden & sleep in it @ night. They really like it! I previously purchased two bales of straw from our local Ag Store. They had a rope tied around each one. What a mess this made in my car. The pieces were long & clogged my shop vac. A mess outside, our porch & dragging it in the house. I threw the last half a bale away. Sweet Meadow Farm straw is smaller pieces, nice sweet smell. It's not scratchy like the other. It doesn't make a mess like the other did. Just all around "good". Yes, it does cost a little more, not a lot. It is worth it to me. We couldn't handle the mess of the other straw anymore. I will need to order more from Chewy soon for soon. It is time to clean their huts & put fresh straw in. I will only purchase this brand in the future. Love it & the cats, too!

The cats are feral. I use totes that I insulated with mylar-backed bubble wrap type of insulation. Then I add the straw for bedding and added warmth. They have survived

The cats are feral. I use totes that I insulated with mylar-backed bubble wrap type of insulation. Then I add the straw for bedding and added warmth. They have survived eleven winters in the North East. The straw is a little long so it's a bit more difficult to position in the totes. However, the cats don't seem to mind.
