Do you leave these in the tank or change them out? If you change the leaves, when do you do it?

Answer by ChewyDec 27, 2019
It is recommended to change the leaves when performing a full water change on your tank.

Do these leaves replace a tap water conditioner?

Answer by ChewyJan 13, 2021
Tap water conditioner helps to remove chlorine, which is harmful to fish. Indian almond leaves help to lower the pH of water by releasing tannin. It does not remove chlorine.

I got these for my Betta who is recovering from a lot of things I had no idea about (long story). He’s in a five gallon tank by himself, heated with a filter. I cut one leaf in half and rinsed it in warm water. Let it dry and then submerged it in his tank, I stuck part of it under his skull hideout. During the first week of it being in there I learned that you need to have a non-carbon filter because the carbon takes most of the tannins out of the water...geez!! So I went on a hunt for a new filter. Make sure you guys pay attention to the the PH levels also. They can tend to drop with IAL in there. My water did turn slightly darker.

I bought these leaves to use as cover for my betta fish, Poseidon. He's in a 20 gallon tank and the lights tend to be bright so I wanted to offer him some shade on the top of the tank since that's where he likes to hang out. These leaves are the BEST! They're large and perfectly intact from the package. They also work as a water conditioner! Poseidon's tank got a little murky after a few days (which was great and he loved it) but when I removed the leaves from the tank, the water turned super clear! More clear and clean than I had ever seen it before. I 100% will buy these again, but since the leaves are so big and there's 10, I probably won't need a new pack for a while. I'm sure Poseidon rates these a 10/10!

First off, these leaves are HUGE! They leech the perfect amount of tannins into the water without making it look like you have a tank full of Earl Grey tea and the mystery snail loves to snack on them. I break one in half and add it to the tank, so a whole pack will last a hot minute!

I have a goldfish in a 36-gallon tank. This was a great value, just three leaves will take care of my tank so I have three doses+. My goldfish had some fin rot and had been lethargic lately. I know Indian Almond leaves are ideal for bettas, but they have so many benefits. I have very hard water and these leaves remove the heavy metals and they have antibacterial and antifungal properties. My fish has perked-up and his fin rot is resolved. I highly recommend these leaves to all aquarium owners.

Catappa leaves serve many purposes for our freshwater and brackish aquariums! As most of us know, Catappa leaves release tannins into the water. Whether you like the natural appearance of a light yellow to dark amber color in the water, we all agree that tannins are good for the health of aquatics. Tannins are natural compound found in many organic compounds such as driftwood, leaf litter, and alter cones. Tannins are antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, and algaecidal. They can help prevent and treat existing infections and parasites in an aquarium, such as Fin Rot, Pop-Eye, and even Ich or Velvet, among many others. Raising the temperature in the aquarium, using freshwater aquarium salt, performing large, frequent water changes of 40-90% daily or every 2-3 days, or the addition of natural antibiotics suggested by your exotics/aquatics veterinarian can also be used to treat serious infections or parasites in the water. This is why I prefer tannins over any artificial, questionable "treatment" in the market, and is exactly why I use these Catappa leaves (driftwood and alder cones as well) in my licensed rescue/foster/rehab center for Betta fish and nano aquaria. I've healed many Bettas with overly long fins (like Rosetails, Feathertails, and long-tailed Halfmoons, which makes their tails too heavy and therefore they bite their own tails off), like Muesli and Texas Pete, two male Bettas of which apparently had overly long fins. I've also used it on many other nano aquatics and Bettas with many other diseases and infections, and it has never failed me. My fellow aquarists, I highly suggest and recommend you consider tannins, which are ultimately much safer, more natural, cheaper for those of you with a small budget, and I believe much more likely to treat infections than any of those many other artificial 'treatments'. I had saved my betta from an apartment fire and she was super stressed from everything. Her color faded and she started to fin nip. I ordered these and cut one in half since they are pretty big. Put it in and two days later her color was back and she was no longer fin nipping. Will order these again when I run out!

I got these to keep my tank natural for my betta Diego. He seem to like it. Took 3 days to sink and didn’t really turn my water brown like everyone was saying but did turn it a lil cloudy. I put one leaf in a 3.5 gallon tank. And plan on switching them out once every couple weeks. Although I don’t see why you can’t leave it in there longer. The only reason why it didn’t get 5 stars was because it don’t state how to store the leaves til you use them.
