About Stella and Chewy’s

In 1997, Marie Moody adopted a dog named Stella from a local animal shelter. She soon decided that Stella needed a companion and adopted a sick pup named Chewy, who joined the family and helped forge the company’s history. On the advice of a veterinarian, Marie began feeding Chewy a raw diet to help with his health issues. He quickly recovered, and both he and Stella thrived on their new food. The experience led Marie to pursue her passion for pet nutrition and start her own business—Stella & Chewy’s.

Questions & Answers

9 Customer Questions

How do you prevent salmonella, listeria, etc in freeze dried treats?

Answer by ChewyNov 07, 2019
Food safety is always a concern, especially with raw foods. Stella & Chewy's takes every precaution with their SecureByNature food safety process that's recognized by the USDA and FDA. The ingredients undergo a special, 100% natural cold-press process that creates water pressure similar to that found near the ocean's floor. No harmful bacteria can survive, and there's no heat to damage nutrients and diminish flavor. Each batch is tested by an independent lab, and the results are even posted online for you to see.

can you feed these to cats?

Answer by ChewyApr 22, 2020
These treats are recommended for dogs.

About how many hearts are in the bag? I know it’s not exact, but an estimate? Than you.

Answer by ChewyApr 23, 2021
We package our products by weight, not by piece count. Additionally, the hearts are not whole hearts, but rather diced pieces. Because of this, we do not have a way to determine the number of hearts in the package.

Do these have any sodium?

Answer by ChewyJun 30, 2020
As these are single ingredient treats, Stella & Chewy's do not measure the mineral content in these products since they’re not designed to be used as a food, but instead as a treat. They do not add any other ingredients to the single ingredient treats, so the Sodium would only be what is naturally occurring in the meat.

My girl was diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma a very aggressive blood vessel cancer. This was the only thing she would eat towards the end. I’m fully convinced this gave me those few extra days. I had to say goodbye to her on 9/9/25. Since these are freeze dried they will last a good while as her brother works his way through them.

My dog loves chicken hearts!! Freeze dried is convenient. The hearts are good sized, bigger than I thought they would be. I counted at least 132 hearts in our bag. My dog might have snuck a few when I walked away. The big bag should last us a while. Though some hearts have residual fat, it is not that big of a problem. My dog has not been turned off by it, so it is probably still fresh. Maybe feed the greasier pieces first if worried about the oil spoiling??

I have 3 large breed cats (12-15lbs), so smaller treats are often gone immediately with no chewing. These are great because they make my cats slow down to chew them, I hold them to make sure they bite them in half first then they are good to chomp on them themselves. For my chicken loving cats, this stuff is absolute cat crack. They only get one a day and they are so excited when they hear the bag crinkle. They are a little greasy compared to chicken breast, but the chicken fat is good for cats so I don't mind the oily fingers after handling them.

Maybe a defect?

I’ve been buying these chicken hearts for my cat but will go from different brands, usually my cat will go feral for these things. I’ve bought Stella and chewy hearts

I’ve been buying these chicken hearts for my cat but will go from different brands, usually my cat will go feral for these things. I’ve bought Stella and chewy hearts before and she ate the whole bag. This time I wanted to stock up so I got a really big bag so they would last for a while, well during meal time my cat would not eat the heart, which she normally LOVES. So I tried giving her another one and she ate it. I’ve continued giving her them not thinking anything of it and she kept not eating certain hearts then I looked in the bag and they look very odd. Usually they will all look pretty similar but with these there’s ones that are black, some that are white, and some grayish ones. I’m just not sure if I should keep feeding her the ones that look okay or just stop with this bag completely. I’m hoping it was just a bad batch.

We were given a gift bag by our dogs breeder when we picked them up- she included a million things! One of which was this product. It’s real freeze dried chicken hearts. My puppies absolutely love these. In fact i just bought some for a friend with a fussy eater toy poodle because my girls love them, and he ate it up so fast. They must be delicious. If my amazing and very knowledgeable breeder (multiple dog show wins) recommends anything I’m for it but these are really good. Chewy’s fantastic customer service has to get a mention- this company is the absolute best. Beyond best.

My dogs love this treat and I use it to give them their medications. Its been failsafe for us. They never spit out the pills. I cut one in half and hollow out a little hole, I stuff the pill in and then seal it with a bit of wet food. My one note is that production is not consistent. I'm not sure how this treat is prepared but some packages arrive with the product firm and crunchy, other packages arrive with the product overly firm, looking burned and then crumbly when I cut them in half. Sometimes the product feel dry and other times packages contain product that are greasy. The dogs love them either way.

High protein, no junk or filler

Both boys LOVE these. I do cut them into smaller pieces. When Timber is barking at the neighbors dogs this is the only treat he will come inside for.
