So I researched this specific food, checked every ingredient to make sure it was beneficial for my dog to consume and you guys have excelled, my dog loves it, but my question is why doesn’t it smell good? It has this kinda protein/vitamin smell to it where I expected a more meaty good smell.

Some of their foods will have a “meatier” aroma than others, depending on the amount of fresh meat in that particular product. Solid Gold Pet also believes in the superior nutrition of fish and as such, ocean fish meal is included in every single one of our dry foods. The fish will often depart a different type of smell, again depending on how much fish is included in the product. There are also probiotics applied to the outside of the kibble along with some fat, which can slightly alter the smell from that “meaty” aroma.

We have been using Solid Gold for over 20 years and my dogs not only love the food they thrive on it. I have used this food successfully with Black Labs Border Collie, Rottweilers and American Staffordshire terriers. Pepe’ a Borado lived to be 16y & 1/2. old! He lived a healthy life until he passed away. We have another Borado that is currently 11 and 1/2 years old and going strong! I feel fortunate that I had a Veterinarian who told me about Solid Gold foods in the 90’s and I will not change from this food. I actually did do a comparison with Blue Dog food and it wasn’t even close. Cheaper prices usually make the foods ingredients poorer. I’m willing to pay more for a healthy long life! I was definitely disappointed when they came out with the smaller bags and didn’t lower the price. But again the quality kept us with the brand which has been around since 1973.

For decades we trusted another extremely high-end brand, but we feel the food changed since it was bought out by petsmart. With our new dog, we never had well formed poo. I was fed up cleaning the back end of our dog daily after trying almost every flavor of the other brand. We switched to Solid Gold King Wolf and within 2 days, we had solid well formed poo. Poo you would write home about. Poo my wife and I discussed at length out of sheer joy. Now that Solid Gold fixed our poo problem, I'm not sure what my wife and I will discuss. Just awkward silence from here on out. It will probably lead to divorce, but at least I'm not cleaning poo off the back of my boy any longer. Thank you Solid Gold!

He was happy, healthy, and young at heart for the 6 wonderful years he was on this food, before I unfortunately had to switch him over to Science Diet. He was diagnosed with a rare form of Osteosarcoma just a few months after switching his food, and sadly (despite paying $20,000 on surgeries & chemo) did not make it. I believe Solid Gold Wolf King kept him healthy for so many years, and that's why I'm switching his full-sister over to it now that she's having GI/Pancreas issues. I will not be feeding Science Diet ever again, but I would highly recommend this food hands down!

I love the fact that the kibble is large as well, it forces my dog to chew his food, which inturn, benefits his oral health. Look at the ingredients, all quality, very nutritious, and gluten free. For people out there that think this food is expensive, compare it to other diets that are on the same quality level, this is definitely one of the more price conscious dog foods, but doesn't suffer on quality, which is yet another reason why I like it. If your dog has protein and gluten sensitivities, this is a great and relatively economical option.

I was having such a heard time with my GSD eating. I’ve tried so many different kinds of food from 4 health, Diamond naturals, Victor, Nulo, Go!, Blue buffalo are just a few and he wouldn’t eat it and a few of them were giving him horrible diarrhea and making him sick. My almost 3 year old, Goldendoodle and Sheepadoodle were on Dr. Garys food for over a year. But their coats lost their shine and stools were inconsistent, sometimes soft something firm. So I transitioned slowly to Dr. Tim's, but after being on Dr. Tim's totally, their stools were soft and mushy, and odd color and they started scratching, something they never had done in the past. So I spent $80 and took stool samples in to vet to be checked in case something else was going on, but came back negative. So I researched food again forever. I am really picky what I feed my girls, and make sure food is balanced with good ingredients and won't feed Grain Free. Reviews and ingredients looked great for this food, so I ordered it. I couldn't use Dr. Tim's to transition as I just wanted to get them off it fast, my husband and i were tired of picking up mushy soft poops and their scratching was driving us nut. So I just stopped Dr. Tim's totally and gave them all of Solid Gold and expected some issues not being able to transition slowly. But OMG, their first stools were perfect. I was shocked. They really really love the food too. I like the larger bites as they don't eat so fast now. They have only been on Solid gold Wolf King large breed for a week now and stools are still nice and formed and easy to pick up. They have both stopped scratching completely and I also noticed hardly any goop in their eyes when they get up in the morning. This food is amazing.

I have an almost three-year-old Golden Retriever. I've been feeding her Solid Gold products her entire life. She's been eating this flavor since she entered adulthood. Since the rebrand and re-formulation of the kibble in August/this summer, my golden has really started to itch so much so that her fur on her thighs has gotten rough. I also think the new ingredients are questionable... what exactly is "Spray Dried Animal Blood Cells" and "Animal Plasma" and why is it included in this food now? Like others have said, it's disappointing for the price to increase and the quantity to decrease but nothing is going down in this economy. For now, we will not be repurchasing this food and instead will try switching to Orijen Original Amazing Grains which is more expensive but has more quality ingredients you can pronounce and understand and it has more protein which is necessary for active dogs like mine.
