For one thing, this product is way overpriced. Second thing is this product is so far from being dust free it's not even funny. If I wasn't coughing my head off I was sneezing. And I normally have no allergy issues. And third thing is the large chunks that I found in this bedding for small pets. These chunks are so unsafe. What are you people thinking. When I'm paying over three times more for your product I expect near perfection. So please do as pet parents a favor and clean up your act. Get rid of All the big chunks and All that dust.

I hate how this is advertised for small pets that are prone to respiratory issues. There is so much dust and fine particles. I had to shake this out in a laundry bag for ages. My lungs were hurting afterwards, I can’t imagine what it could have done to my poor sensitive rats. sucks cuz I paid extra for a perceived high quality brand.

My chinchillas use ceramic litter boxes which I fill with these safe, scent free shavings. All three of my little furry munchkins approve.

This is good for rats, minimal dust. This and the other aspen ones, the brand in the smaller bag, are good. Be careful of the other bedding chewy markets towards rats because the cedar bedding is toxic. I emailed chewy 3+ times about it but the rep responded with ‘I did some research and it’s safe for rats’ so they clearly don’t care. Anyone who can use google or has rats knows softwoods are dangerous and often fatal for rats, besides maybe brand new owners who haven’t done research. That’s exactly who will be hurt most when they trust chewy and put their rats in cedar bedding. I doubt they’ll let this review get posted since it had to get approved by chewy first and it reflects poorly on them. But maybe at some point they’ll start caring about our pets enough to stop marketing toxic products.

Would give zero stars if I could. This bedding is horribly dusty, rat owners beware. I would avoid this completely if I were you. It does say low dust, but I would love to know what they’re comparing this to because the dust is apparent from the moment you open the bag. My boys got a URI from it and I started straining the dust from the bedding using a fine mesh strainer. Not only was it a tedious process, but it also made my allergies flare up. I would have a large pile of dust after the lengthy straining process. I regret not taking a picture to show how bad it was. I finally had to call it quits when my boys got another URI even after my attempts at making the bedding more safe. I was going to cut my losses, but after thinking about it I’ll be reaching out to customer service to see if I can get a refund, especially considering the additional vet costs this bedding caused.. Believe the reviews that say how dusty this bedding is; I didn’t and I paid the price.

I use a different brand of aspen for my rats usually but this was cost effective so I gave it a try. I have to shake dust out of every type of bedding I get but this one was EXTREMELY dusty and even after tons of shakes in a mesh bag to remove dust it is still quite dusty and smells heavily - the room they are in smells like a barn from the bedding (even before they used it) and it triggers my allergies unlike the other brands I’ve been using. The only plus to this brand was that it had much more full shavings instead of being mostly tiny shreds of aspen. Not enough to outweigh the bummer of the smelly dust. Would not recommend unless you are going to shake it out super well and use it outdoors or in a pet area in the garage.

I was glad to see Chewy now carries many Small Pet Select items so I can order all my monthlies through them! This bedding has been great for my two rats, as they have sensitive respiratory systems, and I prefer this greatly over paper beddings, which I have found mostly too dusty. This stuff also smells good too, but not in a chemical/toxic way like untreated pine or cedar. I add bits of other substrates for nesting options, but this is my base layer for odor-control and absorption. Definitely reccommend for rats!

on the bag it says it is low dust and it is good for pet rats as well, it is absolutely not. the whole inside of the bag is coated in fine dust, this is probably the worst dust Issue I've had with any Aspen bedding. the chunks range from super large to really small and I'm consistently getting poked from the bedding. now I have to sift the dust out extra good so it takes extra long.

absorbent but still dusty

i used it for my quails. they are absorbent but the dusty part is unavoidable. esp when dumping the old bedding, I need to wear a mask.

This was my second bag. The first bag was wonderful with almost no dust. So I ordered it again. Full of fine dust that covered my hands, got in my nose/throat and made me cough. I felt awful for my Guinea pig because her little nose is close to the stuff. This bag was like someone swept up the leftovers, fines and dust off the factory floor. I’m still upset about it.
