Can you recycle the trays?

Answer by ChewyJun 11, 2024
The cardboard can be flattened and recycled. After opening a SHEBA PERFECT PORTION tub, discard lid and serve. The plastic tubs are a #5 plastic and can be rinsed and recycled in certain localities (check locally).

From where are the ingredients sourced?

Answer by ChewyMar 12, 2018
Sheba products are manufactured in South Dakota in their own facility.

What exactly is the "added color" in the ingredients?

Answer by ChewyNov 01, 2018
Any colors added to Sheba products are completely safe, even for human food! The safety of all of their color additives has been affirmed by the FDA, as well as reviewed by leading scientists and regulatory bodies. A few examples of their added colors and flavors include FD&C dyes, fruit juice, turmeric or natural caramel color.

I have tried many cat foods over the years including frozen raw whole prey style food, raw cat food packaged nuggets, freeze dried food , and too many conventional canned and dry to count. My color point short hair boy does not have problems with pancreatitis flare-ups on high quality raw diets but that is not sustainable for a household of four cats on my budget. He does not bolt his food and regurgitate , or have problems being gassy and having loose bowel movements with grain free food like Sheba. My ragdoll and Alley cat transition to Sheba just fine. They too have digestive upsets with conventional cheap canned food. The litter box does not stink so much when they eat good quality food. My color point girl also used to enjoy it before she had to be on a kidney diet from Blue Buffalo. I have also gotten that from chewy. On that note I will say veterinarians disagree about high protein quality meat diet for CKD and the older line of thought about reducing protein... But as miserable as CKD cats tend to look on these older diets I think the new line of thinking is the way to go. I recommend you have a look at the ingredients and then make your choice. I have used Shiba and Fancy feast mixed with the phosphorus binder epikitin (veterinary guidance). Because I don't support a dry food only diet for any cat. But that's a stubborn holistic person talking here! It is also possible to water it down a bit and syringe feed a sick cat since the Pate is reasonably smooth. (Again veterinary guidance , or animal shelter advice if you are fostering sick animals) Hopefully no one reading reviews will need to go through home care of a CKD cat but if you do I hope it helps. Yes it's pricey and higher than American journey ounce for ounce. If you are pressed for time and don't want to be bothered saving partially used cans of food then the slight upcharge is worthwhile for the portion packs of Sheba. You will also notice the smell is very different from a cheap brand you may get from the dollar store or off brands or even nine lives and friskies. The cats have shiny coats and high energy and enjoy their food without the need for those horrible attractant sprays that are applied to most kibble to get cats to eat it. (I'm a journalist and I did an article on pet food years ago. The reason cats love their dry food is the formulas they spray on the kibble- not because it is an otherwise desirable food to them.)

I place an order with Chewy and in a couple of days it shows up on my door step. The last order however was left in the middle of my driveway for all of the porch pirates to see. Why the driver couldn't have placed it on the porch or even near the door is beyond me. Laziness perhaps? Fortunately I was home and was able to get it inside before the rain started. UPS never has a problem but for whatever reason Chewy disappoints when it comes to delivery. Am I being too picky? After all it got to the right house....

What is most outstanding is the smoothness of the pate. It is velvety smooth, and some of my cats, especially when aging, have a hard time with things that need to be chewed, or that some hard parts in them. Cat food makers seem to forget that older cats could have toothaches, or sore gums, or other mouth problems, and food they joyfully ate when younger, have become hard for them to eat. Just like they do for humans! Sheba pate is always perfect. I once had a cat who smelled the food I put down, and if it wasn't Sheba pate, she'd literally turn up her nose, march out of the kitchen, throw herself on the floor (with her eyes in my direction, of course), and for all the world looked like she'd crossed her arms and was saying, "you think you can get away with feeding me that swill?!"

My 17-year-old Abby will only eat the pate, and LOVES it, but doesn't care for seafood (go figure!). I found out by trial-and-error which she purrfers!! The ones she doesn't care fur go to the shelter where I volunteer. Just FYI: We use Sheba pate (all kinds) for cats who are refusing to eat . . . and they almost always love it. Sometimes I warm it up just a smidge, so cats who aren't feeling well can get the smell!! I was about to take the beef to the shelter, but gave it to Abby once more, and she ate it all!! I'm trying to get more people to donate Sheba pate (all flavors) to our shelter, as we usually don't have that much . . . and I often offer a half portion as a treat! Oh, and she just discovered Churu (Christmas present!) . . . LOVES THE YUMMY STICKS!!

My cats have liked this food very much for years. The food is not too smelly and no digestive issues. So a 4.5 on that. Not so sure the most healthy food, but my cat only gets a 1/2 tray a day and otherwise eats high quality kibble. I previously have loved this packaging just because a great small portion option and I do not have to refrigerate and serve the other half of can as cold wet food. However packaging seems to have changed recently. Much much harder to snap a tray apart, often resulting in foil coming apart from one or both sides and gravy leaking out. Also both foil and the serrated plastic edges of the tray division area is very sharp - I just badly sliced my thumb. Finally Chewy (which I otherwise love) robotically packs the case with much heavier items causing packages to pop open and leak. For those reasons a 1. Yeah, I know, create two autoships, one for heavy and one for light items but I don’t care for that option for a few reasons. Consequently, I am for a new small portion wet food option. Also contacted Sheba about packaging. They’re sending me a coupon.

Our 14 year old calico cat has gotten more and more picky about her wet food. She used to get Fancy Feast pate only, but lately she has turned up her nose at that. We tried a couple of other brands, but she seems to like the Sheba pate only. At her age we do cater to her fussy palate, but she is a big part of our family and want her to be pampered a bit. I would recommend this product for the picky eater in your family.

Tom totally refused to eat the salmon cat food and would let the whitefish until later. The only flavor he seemed to like was the grilled chicken. When he got his first dish of Sheba chicken, he growled and guarded it fiercely. He also likes the turkey and beef flavors

I have a 14yo picky eater and I tried Sheba perfect portions when she started rejecting her previous favorite (FF petites). She will not eat cold leftovers, even if reheated, so the small/fresh portions are KEY. Sometimes she decides she doesn’t like a flavor, so I like the variety multi-pack and I rotate them so she thinks it’s something new. Sometimes, after rejecting a flavor for weeks, it becomes her new favorite, so I’ve learned to stick with the variety pack and give it a shot at later date. Can’t beat an (almost) empty bowl!

My cat loved Sheba but seems not to anymore. She throws up a lot, so not sure it’s Sheba. I just want to mention that I called Chewy and explained to them that I ordered a case but my cat doesn’t seem to like it and that I’ve used a few of the containers in the box. You were very understanding and refunded me and I think that is great customer service.

Beef for cats?

Our black domestic shorthair cat, Gabriela, loves the turkey and chicken flavors. She doesn't like the beef. I've had cats practically all my life, and not a one of them cared for beef. Dogs in my life have loved beef, and I associate it with dogs. I guess 2 out of 3 isn't bad, but when you have to watch the money, it is not good to have to give away or throw away a third of the contents of the package. I also have severe osteoarthritis in my hands, and the method of opening these packages is not good for us arthritics. The foil is difficult to get started in peeling it off the package. I have cut myself on the foil. It's lovely food, but my cat does not want the beef. I'd love to buy a Sheba selection of chicken and turkey with, say, tuna or salmon, which Gabriela also loves. But I can't deal with the difficulty in opening the packages. Sorry.
