Questions & Answers

4 Customer Questions

Is this food safe and appropriate for wild animals such as squirrels and chipmunks?

Answer by ChewyAug 29, 2024
Science Selective products are formulated as a complete food for pets, which means it will provide all the nutrients they need. With wild animals it is completely different because they will already have a range of food sources from the wild. Please consider your impact when feeding wildlife. Most of the time it is done with the best intention but can be detrimental to their survival by creating a dependence on humans. They may eventually stop foraging or scavenging for their own food.

Is the packaging made of paper or is it plastic?

Answer by ChewyMar 04, 2023
The packaging is made from single polymer plastic that can be recycled at dedicated facilities.

What is the size of this kibble?

Answer by ChewyJan 26, 2021
The kibbles are small triangle shaped nuggets suitable for rats and mice.

What is the crude protein content in this food? There is no picture for the percentages for anything on here.

Answer by ChewyMay 03, 2020
This food contains 14% Crude Protein, minimum. For a complete list of ingredients and the guaranteed analysis, click the “Nutritional Info” tab on the product page.

I wanted to try it since it's not made with alfalfa and corn, which aren't good for rats. They love this food! They also have oxbow and they like this one the best. I usually wrap it in paper or hide in toys so they can be entertained. It's important to give your rats fruits, veggies, seeds, nuts, and lots of variety, and I will continue to buy this food for them to have as a staple.

Chose due to ingredients and my three boys never turn their nose to this, and they're a bit picky. I can really tell a difference in how they look, much healthier, nice silky fur and one of my boys had dry skin which he doesn't anymore. I will continue to use this as they're base food. I like to get at least one other type, usually a mix like tiny friends and combine for variety.

Too expensive

My rats will only eat this food or the Oxbow adult rat pellets. They wont eat any of the "block" shaped rat food or the cylindrical shaped pellets. I have five rats

My rats will only eat this food or the Oxbow adult rat pellets. They wont eat any of the "block" shaped rat food or the cylindrical shaped pellets. I have five rats and all of them are very picky, but they all agree that triangles are the only shape that pellets should be. Of course they love seed mix here and there and fresh friuts and veggies, but I've wasted plenty of money finding out which pellet food is acceptable for munching on and my kids will be very disappointed that this food has gone up so much in price. Back to the oxbow. Lets hope it doesn't go up too

I've been feeding our young rat this food for about 2 months and she loves it. Today I was considering trying Oxbow for something different but when I read the ingredients on both brands I changed my mind. This one has only a few ingredients and without chemicals. Oxbow has a LONG list of added ingredients that you cant pronounce! I'm sticking with Science Selective, rat loves it and ingredients are wholesome and simple.

I've tried several different foods for my 5 boys and 2 girls (rats) but either they got overweight, lost too much weight, their fur turned coarse, or they would throw the kibble right out of the cage. This one has been the only one out of a dozen that they love eating, stay a healthy weight, and their coats stay silky and shiny.

Very happy

I’ve always been a big proponent of Oxbow, but I have to say I am starting to think this is the better quality food. The rats really well on it and the protein

I’ve always been a big proponent of Oxbow, but I have to say I am starting to think this is the better quality food. The rats really well on it and the protein is lower, which is really important for male rats, especially. This food is only for rats that are weeks old and older. I also appreciate that. It’s the only food currently on the market that has no animal products in it.

I normally feed my rats the Envigo-Teklad block, which is getting harder to come by these days. During the holidays I was running out, so I checked out the Science Selective and gave it a try. The ingredients were similar enough to the Teklad to convince me. As per Chewy usual it came quickly. Despite an issue with the shipping label one of the customer service peeps got that sorted out and delivered to me immediately, and I haven't been disappointed. My rats love it. Would definitely buy again.

Great food

I love this food for my rats. It holds up much better than Mazuri or Kaytee pellets, and I like the nutritional profile (especially that it's a vegetarian formula)

I love this food for my rats. It holds up much better than Mazuri or Kaytee pellets, and I like the nutritional profile (especially that it's a vegetarian formula). My rats eat it well and look healthy. My only grievance is that the price has nearly doubled in the past few years. $10 to $18.50 (I'm sure it's over $20 if purchased not on Chewy/Amazon!) since 2021 :/
