Lower RSS

RSS methodology predicts urine crystallization and is used to develop diets that reduce the risk of stone formation.

Maintain Balance

A precise mineral balance can also help prevent stones from forming.

3 of my 5 cats have developed urine crystals or urine debris we believe due to hard water. We moved to a property with a well 2.5-3 years ago and this has been the only change. They have only eaten grain free and raw diet food since they were 6 weeks old. Ages 7, 3 and to 2 years so not an older cat or young cat thing. Originally went to Science Hills Urinary RX but that did not clear up the 3-year-old female and they were throwing it up 1-2 times a week after they ate it, not digested. 1 wouldn't even eat it. I thought it was because of the grain in it, and they have not had grains in their food before. My vet stated she must be on the best RX food available which he believes is Royal SO. Switched them all to it. The oldest was only on it for 7 days and rechecked and his is clear. The female is being rechecked in a few weeks. Very expensive but I have MetLife pet insurance which has been a life saver for their care and food costs. This also has better ingredients in my opinion than Science Hills. None of them have thrown it up at all and they all love it (wet and dry). Huge increase in water drinking like the vet said. We changed them to bottled water instead and I am filling it up daily. Before the 2 fountains would last 2-3 days before refilling so doing exactly what it's supposed to do. I am very happy with the progress so far.

This product helps keep my boys urinary crystals away and he loves it! I can’t recall a single time where he refused the food, he has been a fan since the first day. My only criticism is the insanely steep price. You can’t convince me that a can of cat food needs to cost more than a can of human food. I’d imagine royal canine is making an exorbitant amount of profit on every case sold.

This food saved my older kitty, Eddie’s, life. He had blockages almost every year for three years between ages 3-7 and this food was a huge lifesaver. However! I have to literally finger through the food I serve him before he gets it because it has such large bone fragments inside. The vet even said “yes he can break some down but ultimately they’re not good and are a huge choking hazard. Please, if chewy can’t then send some feedback to royal canin! The sizes of the bones pieces are sometimes ridiculous but I guess those pet parents who’s kitties have bad teeth due to age or whatever like my Eddie go through the food before serving.

My daughter rescued Romeo as a very small feral kitten. Neutered him while still very small. Fast forward she gave him to me when she graduated college and was moving into no-pet apartments. Fast forward again five or so years later he began getting crystals. The vet put him of Royal Canin Urinary SO. I bought him the dry and wet and he loves them. fast forward ten years later and he still loves them but being approx. 20 yrs. old. he seems the like the wet food best.

Urinary SO saved Lucky Boy's life!

back on July 4, 2013 my cat Lucky Boy had to be taken to Pet Emergency because he was in extreme pain and I did not know why! A few minutes past midnight the Vet came out into the waiting room and said they had to do emergency surgery because his urinary tract was completely blocked and his kidneys were failing. It was a "hail mary" surgery because he lived! After many days of losing sleep while speaking with many vets and friends and finally got to speak with a Royal Canin Rep (Jodie) - I got all my answers and my heart and mind were put at ease. I put both my boys on Royal Canin Urinary SO "Dry" and "Wet" - they prefer Morsels in Gravy. Lucky Boy is doing great and no scary return visits to the vet! This is his "second" life he's used up. He's a rescue kitty from a cemetery where my brother works. My brother is in charge of all the landscaping and 20-years ago started a ministry to rescue feral kitties and find them homes and he still does this ministry today! Lucky Boy was found 3-years ago in a pile of rubble and his siblings were all dead except for him. That is why he is called "Lucky Boy" - He is a blessing in our lives!

This is the only urinary prescription food I like - and I have very discriminating taste. I am a cat, after all and my choices are always excellent. My mom and dad tried all the prescription food out there, and either I would throw it up or just starve myself to death. I have been on it for 3 years now, and I am very happy to say my crystals have not come back! Dad, the poor guy who feeds me, adds a little bit more water on it because I don’t really drink water and he tells me that I have to because it’s healthy. He tells me that some cans have more gravy and some don’t, but just to be safe that I am getting more liquid, he adds some water to it, which I also happily lap. Overall, I would highly recommend. I am a very sexy 10 lbs, and I am given about 2 cans a day which my dad divides into 5 feedings since I eat so fast, I would throw up sometimes. Vet says I have to keep my sexy weight, so I am sure I will not get extra servings.

Unfortunately I have terrible luck with cats and urinary issues, as out of 5 cats, 2 of them have had blockages requiring surgery. This time around, we listened to the vet and have ONLY fed my boy Royal Canin Urinary SO food and treats. Luckily, my cat seems to have enjoyed everything except for the "loaf" (pate) style wet food. It has been 2 years now and we have not had any issues. The vet claims he should live the rest of his life blockage free, which we sure hope is true because this food is expensiiive! My cat who doesn't need it likes it too, which is useful when we are going to be gone for the whole day, to make sure the one does not eat the other's food and get himself hospitalized over being a little piggy.

Blockage Free For Five Months (and counting)

My boy Ernie (8 years old) had an emergency blockage in September of 2022. It was very scary and very expensive. He needed to be kept overnight and monitored while they kept him on a catheter. After taking him home, he experienced another blockage in less than 24 hours, and needed to be re-catheterized and kept for another night. :( Never thought I would learn so much about cats, ahem, urinary parts, yet here we are. Turns out blockages are super common in male cats. Anyways, they wrote a prescription for this food and Hills. I honestly never tried the Hills, because Ernie loves this food so much. Pros: -cat loves the food, this one and the moderate calorie version! -since switching to this food he has been peeing normally (and FREQUENTLY) and pain-free. No blockages since. Cons: -yeah, this food is really expensive. We are going to switch soon to a diet with half Royal canin urinary dry food and half wet food per day. This diet is running me about $60/week and my wallet is suffering :( but with the switch I will be saving about $24 / week. Still not ideal, but this is what ya sign up for when you adopt an animal. -the food is frequently out of stock. I use auto ship, but I need to check pretty much every week to ensure that it is in stock so I dont run out. Thankfully, if the normal food is out of stock, usually I can order the moderate calorie version. DEFINITELY keep a backup stock of wet food though. This stuff is clearly in high demand and it can be a pain to deal with. Things to look out for with this food: -expect an insane amount of urine to leave your cats body every day whenever they are on this food. It specifically makes them pee more (to help pass any crystals.) -that pee, along with other excrement, will change smell. In our case, we now are in a much more potent situation. -_- My advice is to of course consult your vet first and foremost. Secondly, I recommend getting a litter genie and a litter box setup that uses pee pads. I use the Tidy Cats breeze litter box. (Best investment ever.) This helps me immensely in tracking how much he is peeing, and in determining when he had stopped peeing blood after his emergency procedures. and it is much cleaner and less smelly! Overall, this is a food that will be a requirement for my boy for most of the rest of his life. Therefore I do not have much of a choice in buying it or not. Thankfully, it is doing its job. Ernie has much more energy now, is pain free, and looooves his new yummy food. Highly recommend, just plan your finances and for supply chain problems.

Life saved

My second black cat Trapper early in his life got crystals in his urine. Dry food for him nearly cost him his life. Vet saved him and prescribed wet urinary diet. Also dry urinary diet. So Trapper grew up mostly on this SO morsels food. Later a neighbor shot him with a .22 cal low velocity gun. His left leg had to be amputated. To control his weight I also give him the weight control version of this food. He can get by with other urinary wet food but he really loves this SO.

My cat, Madden, has been my problem child since day 1... so when he had a blockage and we rushed him into the ER for a $1,000 catheter/hospital stay, I shouldnt have been surprised. We immediately switched him and my other cat to this food. He loves this food so much he growls at his sister to stay away! It has been 4 months since his incident and we havent seen any signs of another blockage!! Thank goodness for this food (this one is his favorite but he also enjoys the other wet food and the dry)! It is expensive since its prescription but my kitties are worth it! Plus the autoship with chewy.com saves us 5%, plus the hassle of going to the store. Id highly recommend!
