Years ago my little guy was starting to have seizures. They started out 2-3 a year then began increasing. His vet gave me the choice of starting him on medicine with all the side effects and vet visits or try Purina Pro Plan Neurocare. I of course chose the food because I felt it was the best thing for my dog. Since being on this specific food he has NOT had one seizure. I’m so happy I made this choice and so is Dakota

So far it's been a miracle for my Rottie

This is my first review ever on this site. I love reading them to get opinions on things, but never wrote one. It's only been a week, but let me put some context behind this. My dog has been epileptic ever seen I started him on heartguard in 2018. this is actually my 2nd Rottie I've had with same results from Heartguard (never again). He's currently on chewable P.Bromide, pheno and zonisamide. I was feeding him orijen chicken for some time and if i even gave him the smallest treat, no matter what (piece of banana, strawberry, chicken, beef marrow bone, etc..) he would start seizuring 2 days later like clockwork. I tried changing foods, 2 days later, seizures. 2 weeks ago, i tried introducing plain greek yogurt to both dogs for probiotics because he'll seizure with chewable probiotics and I had to take him to ER to get volume shot as he had 7 in 24hrs and they were bad. Dr. told me about this food and I had it delivered 2 days later. Switched him to it half and half for first 2 days, then full switch since. it's been 6 days and no seizures. That hasn't happened since he started having them. I am super excited but still know it's too early to call it a life changer, but I have already seen results. I do have insurance for my dogs, so I am getting reimbursed for this which is great. i will give it a full month before i start cutting back on his pheno slowly. I hope this helps others because this could be a game changer for epileptic dogs in my view.

Greyhound seizures

My 5 year old Greyhound started having seizures and with medication was eventually put on this food, she won't eat it without a mixer so we add Natural balance sweet

My 5 year old Greyhound started having seizures and with medication was eventually put on this food, she won't eat it without a mixer so we add Natural balance sweet potato and fish as this was recommended for dogs with seizures for the protein. She was having seizures about every 2-3 weeks and then had 2 very long seizures in the same day. Made some medication changes and food changes and it's been about 3 months since the last seizure and she seems like her old self again. After much research with my vet and medication adjustments this is what she takes daily: half Neurocare & half Natural Balance sweet potato and fish 2x a day, CBD oil 2x a day, Keppra Extended release and Zonegran 2x a day, Quiet Moments sleep aid with melatonin at night. I also removed all scented air freshner products from my home and don't use pesticides inside or in her yard. I use a medication reminder app to keep on schedule as you can't be late giving the meds. I highly recommend the CBD oil as it keeps my girl stress free.

Picky Eater Approved

Our Dalmatian, Pepper, started having seizures when she was just over a year old. We originally tried to avoid medication and went the holistic route but she continued to have seizures. After having two seizures within 24 hours, we put her on pheno. After five months with no seizures, she started having them again so we added a second med, Keppra. She is currently taking five pills a day and still having seizures! Her most recent seizure was last week so we asked our vet about a prescription diet and ordered right away. We are hopeful that this will help the seizures stop (probably not, we were told they will never go away completely but should happen less and less frequently.) Pepper has always been on high quality food but she has never shown much interest. We started her as a puppy on Royal Canin but she begin not eating so we moved her to Taste of the Wild and she was not much more eager to eat with it. Pepper has loved this food so far. We are currently mixing it with Taste of the Wild and she has been eating on schedule, not grazing. I cannot rate rather or not it has helped her seizures but with all the positive reviews, I am hopeful that it will. I will update again in a few weeks. Pray for our girl!

Works for us

I have a 5 year Shiloh Shepherd with idiopathic epilepsy diagnosed 2.5 years ago. He has seizures every 4-8 weeks and is not on medication per 3 vet recommendations

I have a 5 year Shiloh Shepherd with idiopathic epilepsy diagnosed 2.5 years ago. He has seizures every 4-8 weeks and is not on medication per 3 vet recommendations due to infrequency. Anyways, we started this food in June and went 26 weeks without a seizure. It IS expensive and doesn’t work for all dogs, but to me it’s worth at least trying for a couple months. There’s research behind these ingredients (I.e. medium chain triglycerides) for epilepsy management.

Purina Pro Plan

I have an 11 year old Schipperke who had been occasionally "fly biting" for a few years mostly when she was stressed. A couple of months ago she had an undefined

I have an 11 year old Schipperke who had been occasionally "fly biting" for a few years mostly when she was stressed. A couple of months ago she had an undefined neurological episode where she was unresponsive, lethargic, and walked with an unsteady gait. We took her to the vet and they ran blood tests and took xrays but found nothing unusual. Josie slowly started improving on her own but the vet recommended trying Purina Pro Plan Neurocare. Apparently a staff member had good results feeding it to her dog. I was skeptical (especially when I heard who made it) but I was willing to give it a try. I didn't know if it was the food or if she was just recovering on her own, but after feeding it to her for just one day, we saw an improvement in her overall behavior. We've been feeding her Purina Pro Plan now for about 4 months now and the incidents of fly biting has decreased and she has had no major neurological episodes. Since this seems to be helping her, I will continue to buy it. Before we started on Purina Pro Plan, I would only feed Josie 5 star dry dog food so I was less than pleased to read the ingredients of this brand. However, I do supplement this food with higher quality wet and dry food to make it last longer and to boost the quality.

DO NOT BUY!!!

If I could give zero stars, I would. 1 star is way too many! My boy has had seizures since he was a puppy, luckily not that many, however, he started having them

If I could give zero stars, I would. 1 star is way too many! My boy has had seizures since he was a puppy, luckily not that many, however, he started having them again when he turned 6. We asked out vet about ProPlan Neurocare. He didn't know anything about it, but he said we may as well give it a try and see what happens. We have never given our dogs Purina products as they are well known for adding unhealthy ingredients and fillers, but we were willing to try anything for our boy. Needless to say, almost immediately our boy started having more seizures than he had had his entire life! I started speaking with a dog nutritionist and started learning about MCTs (medium -chain triglyceride) as this is what Purina promotes in their ingredient list. MCTs are used for brain health and come from coconut oil, or palm seed oil. If you look at the ingredient list it states: vegetable oil (source of medium-chain triglyceride). THIS IS FALSE INFORMATION! Vegetable oil is a LCT (long-chain triglyceride), NOT a MCT! MCTs and LCTs are NOT the same. We have since changed our boy's food to a more nutritious food, and pour organic MCT oil on top of his food. Thus far, no seizures. I'm in no way shape or form saying that this food CAUSED our boy's seizures, but it definitely did not help. What I AM saying is that Purina is misrepresenting their ingredient label and profiting off people who would do, or try anything, for their dogs. We paid close to $150 (after tax and shipping) for 25 lbs of this food, and since switching to a more nutritious food, we have also cut our dog food bill by $60.00. Purina should be ashamed of themselves!!!

Saved my Dog’s Life

In her old age, my dog started having very long seizures and was exhibiting neurological problems. Medicine controlled the seizures, but she was having so many accidents

In her old age, my dog started having very long seizures and was exhibiting neurological problems. Medicine controlled the seizures, but she was having so many accidents in the house amongst so many other symptoms and just was not happy. I went to my vet and told her I thought it might be time as I didn’t want her to suffer. She suggested we try one more thing - This was it. Within two days, I could tell a difference in her. Within two weeks, the accidents stopped entirely. She was leaping around the yard and was her old self. This extended and improved her life significantly. I shifted her food a year ago, and she is still doing great. I cannot recommend it more.

Guppy loves it!

My Boston terrier mix was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 4 years old. She had terrible cluster seizures and her medications clouded her mind. A friend (a vet tech)

My Boston terrier mix was diagnosed with a brain tumor at 4 years old. She had terrible cluster seizures and her medications clouded her mind. A friend (a vet tech) told me about Neurocare and we switched to it right away. Guppy loves it, but to be fair she loves all food. The most important note is that she is back to her normal personality and almost seizure free. In the past year since her diagnosis, she has had less than 5 seizures. She is on a lot of medication but I do think the food makes a big difference. Her original prognosis was 1-3 months, but she is thriving even 12 months later. We will keep her on this food til the end!
