I've tried many foods to find what works for my Australian Shepherd while avoiding bad ingredients. With more and more research coming out about the negative impact of ingredients like peas, potatoes, lentils, and legumes this was becoming harder and harder. Tate is a high energy dog that's always on the go, most days he puts the energizer bunny to shame! Because of this, I try to stick to high cal/cup foods so he doesn't have to eat a ton to keep weight on. He's not the pickiest dog out there but if he doesn't care for the food he'll eat just enough that he doesn't feel hungry but not enough to hold weight. I've dealt with foods that don't make him feel full causing hunger pukes. Foods that give bad gas, huge poops, tons of shedding, and so on. With Pro Plan, he was able to eat 3 cups a day and maintain a perfect weight with amazing muscle! He was excited for every meal and training session that included Pro Plan. I even did a personal test where I sat out raw and Pro Plan, he sniffed the raw and went for Pro Plan first. He didn't overheat while on it which has happened with other foods. His poops were tiny, he didn't shed a ton, his coat was amazing, and no bad gas! There's a lot of controversies out there about Purina products but in this case, the proof is in the dogs. Pro Plan will always be in my food rotation.

We feed our Belgians about 85% Purina ProPlan 30/20 and rotate through other options for the remaining 15%. We feed Purina because it meets WSAVA guidelines, and Purina has many, many actual veterinary nutritionists on staff and the ability to do actual feeding trials of their foods. I have been in dogs for many years, and have fed everything from various premium kibbles to home made (formulated by a veterinary nutritionist for our individual dogs' needs) to prey model raw. We switched to Purina after the concerns about nutritionally-acquired cardiomyopathy surfaced, and have been very pleased with it. Our dogs do very well on it, maintaining excellent weight and condition, with no ear, skin, or coat issues. Popps are firm and consistent. They are active dogs, and this gives them ample fuel for energy and stamina when working, but isn't "rocket fuel" leading to excess energy or soft stools. The one negative thing is that my dogs have had issues with other Purina products when the formulas have been changed (their Sensitive Skin and Stomach formula was fantastic until they did something with the probiotics and then it was a problem for a couple of my dogs). This food has been consistent for years and well-tolerated by my own dogs as well as fosters who adjusted to it very quickly.
