What about the Duck formula changed as of May 2026?

is the can BPA free?

The cans are not BPA-free. However, the steel and aluminum cans have a protective lining that contains very low levels of BPA that are below all state and federal recommended levels and are considered safe for food contact.

Has this food been proven to improve loose stool in cats with sensitive stomachs?

Answer by ChewyNov 25, 2019
This recipe is formulated to help promote your kitty's healthy skin and coat, while the highly-digestible formula is gentle on sensitive stomachs. It is not intended to treat loose stools.

Fungus? Larvae? Something gross in it

When my "always hungry" cat didn't eat her first can of this after 6 hours, I took a closer look at the food. I immediately noticed this white stuff around the outside of the food (which was still in can form). It looks like some kind of fungus or bug larvae. My wife and 2 friends agreed that it doesn't look right. I did not open any other cans. Not sure if literally bad food can be returned/refused or what, but I don't think it's supposed to have this. I still have one case of Purina Pro One High Protein that I gave her instead and she wolfed it down, so she was clearly hungry.

She loved the first two cans. I give her a 3 ounce can in the morning. But then, after that, she started getting loose stools and then looser and then looser and then all day Thanksgiving she was running to the bathroom every 10 minutes. It was just awful. I took all her food away and then read that I shouldn’t be starving her so I went back to her old food and she ate it happily and the diarrhea stopped and she had a normal poop today. Maybe I just got a bad batch because I always purchase at least one can of a new food as a tester before I buy a whole case and this food is specifically meant for sensitive stomach and was recommended by my vet, so I was surprised and sad for her.

Our 12 y/o girl was losing weight which of course was of concern. Due to her age she was started on a renal care diet just in case. She did well for a while but began to lose again; so off to the Vet. A wide panel of blood work was done as well as a fecal. The blood work was “perfect” and the fecal negative . There were no palpable masses in her abdomen, kidneys, or enlarged nodes. Her Veterinarian (feline specialty) recommended switching to sensitive skin and stomach food so we picked up a can of the Purina Pro Plan Duck to see if she would eat it. Well, she loved it, and when she finished the can she yelled for more. She even ate the little bits that fell on the floor. I brought the ingredient sheet in for her Vet to review and she found it to be an “excellent choice”. Funny, even the dogs came running when the can was opened.

My sixteen year old cat developed stomach problems and the Purina sensitive foods solved the issues she was having with vomiting and loose stools. She also is more relaxed and comfortable since she started eating this. Before she would sit in a "hunched" cramped looking position. She was obviously uncomfortable. Now she lounges and stretches. She has put on weight, plays more and would be an entirely happy kitty if it weren't for that other cat in the house!

Big Fan Over Here

My cat Finch goes wild for this flavor. I really like how shiny it has made his coat. It is lower in calorie so you will need to feed more of it than other flavors

My cat Finch goes wild for this flavor. I really like how shiny it has made his coat. It is lower in calorie so you will need to feed more of it than other flavors. I just wish that there was a single sourced protein and used a duck liver instead of a chicken liver. That seems really hard to find while maintaining veterinarian standards of food formulation.

It works! Long review, lots to say!

I have always fed my two cats a grain-free, high protein, low carb diet of FF Classic, Weruva, and Tiki Cat. I feed 75% wet with only 1 T of dry (I now use Natural Balance High Protein LID, but I was feeding Dr. Elseys Clean Protein) mixed in at each meal. It took me years to transition them from the dry only diet their previous family fed them. I've also been slowly decreasing the amount of fish in their diets. One cat, however, has been itchy during the past year. I've taken him to 2 vets who proposed expensive skin allergy tests and suggested kitty Claritin for possible environmental allergies. I switched their flea medication, tried lysine supplements, tried Rescue Remedy, tried fish oil supplements, started washing their bedding more often and with no detergent/softener, and eliminated any food with peas or eggs in an attempt to alleviate his itching. Still he itched! Finally I realized it might be the increase in chicken. I've been feeding lots of Tiki Cat Puka Lua and Weruva Fowl Ball. So I bought this food and the other Arctic Char flavor pate at a local store and have been using both exclusively with the itchy cat. After 2 days, the itching was reduced by 75%. Where he overgroomed on his lower back, the fur started coming back! I wish the matching dry food didn't have corn, soy, and chicken. I know some cats have seafood allergies. This duck food has fish in it, but no chicken. I will stick with the Natural Balance LID High Protein Salmon for a dry food for the itchy boy. It's one of the only LID grain-free ones that doesn't have chicken! I hope this helps other people and cats. It took a lot of work and money to figure this out! I hope he continues to be itch-free!

One of my cats has developed a severe gastrointestinal disease. We needed to switch him to a single protein, and one that he hasn’t had before. He is very picky. We tried rabbit, but he wouldn’t touch it. I knew he liked other flavors in the regular Purina Pro Plan line, so I tried this as it was both for sensitive stomachs and contained a single source protein that he hadn’t had before. He loves it, and now I don’t need to worry about him not eating. There are other flavors in this line, but those are proteins he has had before, so I can’t use those with him.

Great Diet Food

One of my cats has a sensitive digestive system, but I wanted to start feeding him 1 can of wet food a day, because it's lower in calories than dry food and he needs to lose a few pounds. Not only does he love it, but it hasn't affected his bowel movements at all. A few more months on this lower calorie diet, and chonky boy will be a slonky boy!

Found: the Right Food!

I recently adopted a10 year old “Pet of the Week” kitty from our county’s animal shelter. She came in as a 14lb “stray” at the end on May. She was “pet of the week “ in mid September, and weighed only 8.5 lbs when I adopted her. She was emotionally “shut down” and only wanted to stay under my bed. She would not eat any of various foods I tried. ( I have several cats on special diets) In fact, after tasting one or another she would throw up. My vet did a very comprehensive exam, and gave her a clean bill of health. Finally I found the sensitive skin and stomach pate. I tried out different flavors form my local pet store. The only one she will eat is the duck entree. I began with 3-4 feedings daily of small amounts mashed with a small amount of.water. She has gradually been increasing her intake, and is beginning to gain back some weight, and also seems to have less dryness of her skin.

Sensitive skin food

My kitties LOVE this cat food. One of them has a sensitive stomach, often throws up food she has been always eating with no adverse symptoms. She also has an allergy to some foods, resulting in a lot of scratching. This Duck food is perfect for her. She not only loves it, but it is easy on her stomach and she doesn't have an allergic reaction to it.
