Is the meat used in your food from America?

Answer by ChewyJun 17, 2020
The vast majority of Purina's meat and poultry ingredients are sourced from the United States. Purina do source select ingredients outside of the United States. For example, the lamb and venison utilized in their formulas is sourced from New Zealand and Australia.

Dogs enjoyed the product but ingredient list leaves me with questions... Ingredient list starts as follows: "Chicken, water, liver, meat by products, rice, fish, guar gum..." When analyzing ingredient lists, at least 2 factors are important - 1. The order of the ingredients is relevant as they are listed by quantity with the first ingredient being the highest quantity. 2. The more specific in terms of details of the ingredients, the better. For example: "Chicken by products" is preferred to "Animal by products" as the latter does not specify what kind of animal and that can be very concerning in terms of knowing what type of animal is in your pet's food. So let's look at this ingredient label. In this case, "chicken" is listed as the first ingredient and that is an excellent start. However, the questions start from there. Water is listed at the 2nd ingredient, meaning it is the 2nd most item in the food. Most pet foods don't need that amount of water added, there is enough natural moisture in the meat and vegetables. So in this case, you are paying for water. Then, we have the lack of enough detail problem... "liver" is listed next- However, from what animal? It does not say. Same thing with "meat by products" and "fish" - there needs to be more detail listed. If you are wondering why the specifics of the ingredients are important, there are a lot of reports and documentaries out there exposing pet food company's for using questionable animals and sources of animals for their foods. I am not saying that Purina is doing this, I am just saying more detailed information is preferred. Lastly, the ingredient "guar gum" - though frequently used in pet products, there are some concerns about it's long term safety and is generally considered not a necessary ingredient i pet food. My dogs seemed to enjoy the product but in order to more fully recommend, I'd need to review a more detailed ingredient panel.

This is for a precious 10 month old pup. He was shot through the face and our vet showed us how to make small meat balls to by-pass the holes in his pallet. He will have surgery in a few weeks, but we needed him to eat. This worked. Small meat balls tossed to the back of his throat and he swallows. He is going to make it.

We have 2 dogs [3years old] a male yellow lab mix [80#] and a 23# female cocker spaniel; their kibble is Purina Pro Savor Chicken and Rice. They have been on it since about 6 months of age. They have been perfectly happy with the kibble but I thought a little variety might do them good so I bought the canned food. They got their first taste last night -- they went nuts! I am giving it more as a treat than real nourishment - gave each of them about 0.25 can and mixed it with their dinner. I could barely get it into the cocker spaniel's bowl --she smelled it as I was opening the can and was jumping up and down trying to get to it as I was putting it in her bowl! Think you have a hit!!!

In the time we’ve been getting 2 cases every 6 weeks shipped, several of the shipments have arrived with bent and damaged cans, one was so badly damaged, that the can was punctured and maggots were growing in the moist food and we had to throw it out, immediately. If the 2 cases can be shipped in a smaller box, separately from the kibble, box of biscuits, etc. if you have a better idea or solution, please let me know.

First off, my dog absolutely loves the taste! I’ve tried a lot of different canned dog foods, but this one is by far his favorite. Whether I’m mixing it with dry kibble or using it on its own, he can’t wait to dig in. It’s definitely a great way to get him to eat, especially on those days when he’s feeling a little picky or off his food. And let’s be honestly getting a dog to take medicine can be tricky, but Purina Pro Plan’s canned food makes it so much easier. I just hide the pills in a spoonful of the food, and it’s all gone in seconds. No more hiding medicine in cheese or peanut butter!

I recently introduced wet food into my Australian Shepherd's diet and chose this brand to start. It was the right decision. My dog absolutely loves it! He finishes his supper in one sitting instead of nosing around and procrastinating. Definitely recommend for picky eaters.

The food is great and hard to find so it is wonderful that chewy carries it. I have a dog with myasthenia gravis and megaesophagus that needs to eat 4 cans of this a day (his food has to be made into meatballs). I ordered A LOT and put it through auto ship. I received my first order and it was wrong - the wrong amount and the wrong food (prescription hills which you need a prescription for) but it had the correct packing slip in the box. I called customer service and was told that the only way they could get me my food is by returning the wrong food and they would ship my correct food once they received that. I explained that my dog needed this food and it was very difficult to find. I was told that this is how it has to be done. I let it go and said okay. I searched for the food and found just enough cans for 2 days then ordered two more cases from chewy to hold us over until we got the right food in. I will most likely be receiving my second auto ship of the food before I get the first one. I talked with a few people about it and they were shocked and the common response was “they are usually so good”. Due to the fact that this doesn’t seem like the norm, I am writing a review so it comes to chewy’s attention. I will continue to order the food through here because it is hard to find and I have faith that this was just a one time thing. It was just disappointing.

I used this Purina Pro Plan canned dog food as a topper for my dog's dry kibble. He gobbled it up, so I guess that means it tastes good. I only gave 3 stars because the can lists "meat by-products" on it's ingredient list. I wish the animal source was mentioned. Not mentioning the animal source means it could be anything and I really would like to know what I am feeding my dog. In this day and age with all human grade foods out there, pet owners want more and more to feed their dogs high quality foods. Many of these human grade foods are very expensive, so we at least want good quality options from our main stream dog food brands. Purina misses the mark on this one. I will not be purchasing again.

My dogs loved this! I have four dogs aging from 14 to 6 months and they all loved this. The puppy got some on a lick mat while I did nails. The older dogs got this mixed in with their kibble and quickly ate their food. I also used it in some slow feeders to keep the dogs engaged and occupied while I did house work. I love the complete essentials for knowing my dogs are getting proper nutrition.
