So it went from 50lbs for $75 to 40lb for $85??

Answer by BrandyMay 07, 2026
Yes. Money hungry company.

Wow could there be any more negative reviews??

Is this first cut hay?

Lowering the amount of hay and charging more for less hay is outrageous.

First, I want to acknowledge that I understand hay is grown outdoors and it all depends on the conditions it’s grown in which isn’t any companies fault. However, I do wish these companies would allow us to see the hay we are buying in bulk before buying it (like you can at the pet store). Or instead, charge differently based on the quality of hay. I would pay more $ to get the same type of hay I want every time because it’s a waste gambling on these mystery boxes. I have only ever bought Small Pet Select hay in the 10 years I’ve had bunnies. I now have bunnies who need good quality hay so that they continue eating a lot of it. The last few boxes of 2nd cutting that I got from SPS were soft and had a lot of brown pieces and my bunnies were digging to the bottom of their hay piles to eat old hay that was better quality. For the first time in my life I bought a bag of Oxbow Timothy hay at the pet store (that was courser and greener) and my bunnies gobbled it up! A bag doesn’t last long so I ordered a 9lb box from Chewy on 8/23. Same awesome quality so I decided to order 2 9lb boxes on 9/7. These two boxes are soft with brown pieces. Something I would consider to be 3rd cutting and isn’t going to help with their teeth or digestive systems. There has to be a better way for us consumers to choose the quality of food that we feed our animals every single time.

Quality control has gone down

I’ve been getting oxbow hay for more than 7 years. I noticed in the last 6 months there was a lack of consistency in the hay. The inconsistency has only but increased since then. The final straw was finding a dead INSECT in my rabbits hay. I’m glad I caught it because I know my rabbit would’ve eaten it. This insect was in the same bag of hay I just gave my rabbit who is currently sick (unrelated issue). I am not happy knowing my rabbit could’ve eaten contaminated hay. I cancelled my auto ship orders and will not be purchasing oxbow hay from here on out. I highly recommend finding a new source for hay. If you look at other reviews of this product, I am not the first to complain about the decline of quality control. I don’t know what is going on with Oxbow, whether the issue is with them or the farms they source their hay from, but they need to fix this if they don’t want to lose more customers.

What happened to the great long stalks of timothy hay in the 25 lb. bulk hay boxes!?! I get a notice 25 lb. no longer available, only 20 lbs. for same price AND its a crappy huge compressed block of short and stubby pieces of hay. So user unfriendly. I liked the flakes of hay in the 25 lbs. not this stubby block thing. Very hard to take apart so dusty too, and I dont have long fingernails, still hard to pull apart and distribute to my bunnies. Shocked Oxbow would do something like this.

My last two orders from of Oxbow Timothy Hay have been problematic. On both original orders the Timothy Hay was very bad quality (damp, musty, weedy, brown scruffy fuzzy stuff in it) and my guinea pig wouldn't eat it. Both times I requested a replacement. The replacements were better, but the hay still didn't seem fresh. It was more yellow than green with short strands and was dry. I'm not sure what is going on with the Oxbow hay. If it continues to be a problem, I'll have to look for a new brand. Chewy has been great with rectifying the problem and sending replacements quickly, but I'm very disappointed in the quality. I also find it suspicious that the Oxbow label with the Lot Number and Freshest By Date were covered over on the bad box. Was this done by Oxbow or Chewy?? Attaching pictures of the original bad box and replacement...

Hard to trust the boxes

My bun loves this brand/flavor of Hay, but twice I've tried to get the bigger box to be more economical, plus price wise it makes more sense, but honestly both boxes

My bun loves this brand/flavor of Hay, but twice I've tried to get the bigger box to be more economical, plus price wise it makes more sense, but honestly both boxes were crappy hay. They are the dust small broken pieces that just feel much less premium than if I buy the 90oz bags. Ends up feeling like a waste of money bc there is so much to get through and my bun just turns his nose up at it. Its like the bottom of every hay bag was thrown into a box

Crapshoot of a hay bundle

When you receive the box, it comes with a disclaimer that this hay is not picked through and when feeding you basically need to do your own quality control. If that disclaimer was in the description somewhere, I would not have purchased it. The dead hay in the photo is a small amount, but it was all throughout the batch. It was great to not have to buy hay so frequently, but I'm not sure the 'crapshoot' of the type of hay you receive is worth it.

I’m usually very satisfied with Oxbow Timothy hay and I’ve exclusively fed this brand to my bunny and chinchilla for many years. However, something about this recent box seemed off, like it wasn’t given enough time to dry or possibly is mixed with something else. Now I’m almost certain that there is something wrong with it since my bunny is showing early signs of stasis. The ONLY thing different in his diet is this new box of hay. I’m rather upset about this. I would like a refund or possibly a new box of hay to replace this one.

This could have been a fluke, and chewy was amazing at taking care of it, but the quality of the hay in the largest bulk box was poor in comparison to the smaller quantity bags/boxes I’ve received in the past. It appears to be more like first cutting hay. It’s yellow and stemmy, doesn’t have the usual sweet smell. Most importantly, my guinea pigs did not like it much. It was not moldy or bad in anyway, just not the quality I’m used to getting from Oxbow. I only ordered the big box to save some money on a bulk order, but not worth it if the guinea pigs won’t eat it. Photo of how much they’re wasting, when they usually clean it up well.

Quality is dropping. Oxbow fix this problem!

What the heck Oxbow? Once a month, for well over a decade, have been ordering 25 or 50 pound boxes of Oxbow Western Timothy Hay. Before Chewy came along I purchased Oxbow hay and products from a now defunct on-line pet supply store. The last three month (December, January and February) the Oxbow Timothy Hay was lower quality than normal. There were two issue. The hay consistently had some brown stringy hay clumps intermixed and the hay was also dustier than usual. I chalked it up to seasonal conditions as normally Oxbow Timothy Hay is fantastic and duds are extremely, extremely, rare and one-offs. The dust worried me more than the brown stringy bits. I just lined the bottom on the liter boxes with that stuff. But my March 2026 order that I just received is not acceptable. Is the hay edible, yes. Will I feed it to my rabbits? No. It will line the very bottom of the litter boxes. Oxbow's new 20 pound box of Timothy Hay is full of short cuts of hay! Most pieces are only a few inches long. There are NO LONG STRANDS that house rabbits need! On a plus the dust issue is resolved! But I am sad to say this product, in its current state, is not worth it. Especially with the price increase (which, to be fair, may a shared issue, or be Chewy's fault). I will gladly and hastily amend, or write a glowing review, IF the quality issue is resolved. For clarity the two house rabbits go through 50 pound a hay a month, more or less. A few years ago I stopped buying the Oxbow 50 pound hay boxes (with a few exceptions) and switched to Oxbow 25 pound hay boxes. I made up the difference by ordering 25 pound boxes of Small Pet Select Hay. I really like both companies and before today have been satisfied with their hays and products. Oxbow: Fix this problem!

So much of this hay is unusable. Each time I refill my rabbits hay, I have to sort through it for at least half an hour to throw at least half of it away. There’s a lot of stringy brown hay my rabbit won’t eat, it’s the texture of hair, very few long pieces of hay, tons of dusty bits. Definitely won’t be purchasing bulk hay from Oxbow again. The small bags never look anything like this.
