Questions & Answers

Do you recommend keeping the bag open to keep the hay dry?

Answer by ChewyJun 21, 2019
Hay should be stored in a cool, dry place with good air circulation (don't close it tightly in a plastic bag - a brown paper bag or pillow case works well).

Is this 1st, 2nd or 3rd cutting?

Answer by ChewySep 11, 2019
Oxbow will harvest the hay prior to it reaching its maturity stage so it's neither 1st or 2nd Cut.

Is a 90 oz a lot? How big is it?

Answer by ChewyAug 20, 2019
A 20 ounce bag contains approximately 1.3 pounds, a 40 ounce bag contains approximately 2.5 pounds, and a 90 ounce bag contains approximately 6 pounds.

how long with a 90 ounce bag last a 4lb dwarf rabbit. my holland lop maybe eats close to 24oz a month if that and I wanna make sure I stock up so I'll only have to do auto ship every 5 months.

Answer by ChewyOct 30, 2018
The longevity of the bag depends on your rabbit's daily eating habits. As most rabbit owners allow their rabbits to have unlimited access to hay the longevity of the bag can vary.

I have purchased this product for years & have never had a issue with it before. A few weeks ago I found a very large bird feather in one of my hay bails. I didn’t think to much of it because it’s hay. But today I opened one of my brand new bags of hay to discover a rotting crushed rat in it. The smell was revolting. This is absolutely disgusting & needs to be solved. This company cannot distribute hay if it contains these contents. Be very careful when purchasing from Oxbow!

Disappointed

I've been buying this brand of hay for my rabbit for the last 3 years. I've always been happy with the freshness of the hay, and it appears my rabbit has too. And it was a good value for the quality. However, at the bottom of our last bag, I found a card from Oxbow, informing customers that they would be reducing package sizing in the future. Same weight and quantity of hay, less packaging. Great, they're taking steps to reduce their footprint, looking out for the environment. Well, I thought it was "great." Then I got my new, smaller bag of hay. Same good quality, fresh hay, smaller package, but, now, they've begun chopping the hay smaller to fit into that smaller package. And now, I find myself using more each day since it's more finely chopped. And the finer cut also makes a bigger mess than what I had before. I'm still at the very top of the bag and finding lots of fine cut scraps, as if I was near the bottom and at the end of the bag. At first, I though that perhaps this was how the hay had been stored at the warehouse and perhaps the fines had shifted towards the top of the bag. I'm now realizing that this is just how much fine scraps there are in this bag. And I can only imagine how much scrap will be in the bottom once I finish it. Before the package change, the hay was similar to long cut grass, I could fill Lucy's box and she was able to nest in it, hide, play, could snack all day, it didn't tamp down quickly, she was good to go for the better part of the day. Now, with the finer cut, there is no fluff, the short strands land on the bottom of the box, there is no volume. It looks like she's lost interest in it as well. Where it was once an exciting time of the day for her fresh hay, now, she really doesnt pay much attention, as she did before. And the size of the package doesn't really save much space on my end. So, while the company may be able to stock more product on their end, I'm not seeing the value on mine. I'll be looking for another brand, something more like the product that was offered before the packaging change. To be clear, this is not an issue with Chewy. Their service has always been phenomenal. This is an issue with Oxbow. I'm including a couple of pictures, for what it's worth. Unfortunately, I never took a picture of my hay before their packaging change, so no way to show the difference.

Guinea pigs love this blend!

I found the perfect blend of hay for my guinea pigs. They love this mix of Timothy hay and Orchard grass and Chewy currently has the best price on this 90 oz bag

I found the perfect blend of hay for my guinea pigs. They love this mix of Timothy hay and Orchard grass and Chewy currently has the best price on this 90 oz bag @ $20. This Was the whole reason I purchased my hay from Chewy and I was thankful that I did, because it has led me to even more great price finds for my Guinea Pigs. Now I have auto ship set up for both my dogs and Guinea Pigs and I’m saving money. Oxbow has excellent quality products and I’m very pleased with my purchase.

My guineas love this hay and I’ve been really fond of this brand in general. However I found an old plastic bottle at the bottom of the bag. Really bummed about it because I feel they should be more cautious when packing these products at the factory. I’ve also found plastic twine in the past as well. Wondering if I need to change brands now. Idk.

Great quality hay!

Our bunny loves this hay! The humans love Chewy’s crazy fast shipping and the general consistency with the quality/cut of the hay. Sometimes we’ll be left with lots

Our bunny loves this hay! The humans love Chewy’s crazy fast shipping and the general consistency with the quality/cut of the hay. Sometimes we’ll be left with lots of left over dusty and tiny bits, but overall it’s a good length. Lots of hay tops too! Not too dusty which is a big plus as our bunny has a history of respiratory issues.

My picky (spoiled) guinea pig likes to waste hay and just nibble a bit when she doesn't care about the hay. I've had her on the orchard grass(her fav) and she started the same. Alfalfa, meadow, timothy, oat, no matter the brand, same thing. When I received this bag, she squealed like crazy! The hay smelled good, and so far every serving she has consumed with no picky nibbling. Oxbow is the only brand I have gained trust in over the years of guinea pig ownership. Great value and price.

Chewy has always been great my issue is with oxbow....half the questions on the review form were about product and half about chewy so i just wanted to say that) I have been buying oxbow hay for years and it has always been good with a crappy bag here or there and i could deal with that but lately( last 4 or 5 bags) have either been filled with this yellow straw looking stuff. Its the same stuff thats in the oat hay...ive never had it in the western timothy before...ever. And the snaller bags (20 oz) have been half nice hay and half dusty itty biity shredded pieces...at least no gangly gnarly straw like pieces i guess...

I have a couple of Netherland Dwarf bunnies who are picky hay eaters. I've found that this timothy plus orchard grass hay is their favorite combo. I think they enjoy the variety in taste and texture, which encourages them to eat more. They especially love it when it's fresh and right out of a newly opened package. My buns definitely enjoy this more than standard timothy hay, but I recommend a hay topper (herb sprinkles- my buns prefer Kaytee Food From the Wild Natural Snack). The only thing that I don't like about this hay is that the bottom few inches of the bag is filled with tiny hay shreds that my buns refuse to eat, but I usually stick it in some toys or mix it in with their pellets. I wish that there wasn't as much of this hay dust, but it's worth it to me as long as I know that it keeps them healthy and they enjoy it.

This is good hay and good value but today I was pulling out a handful of hay for our guinea pigs and a large bird feather was mashed in with the hay. Doesn't seem very hygienic and not sure if I should continue feeding it to them?
