Questions & Answers

Does the maze design between the different colors of the same size change anything or do they all perform they same?

Answer by ChewyJun 27, 2019
The purple slow feed bowl is the easier because it has the most stops, or areas where the dog is able to push the kibble up on the side of the bowl. The orange is the most difficult because it has the most spirals and areas that the dog needs to use their tongue to get the kibble out. To determine which bowl to purchase, consider how much food your pet eats at each meal. The mini measures 9.5 x 8 x 2.2 inches and holds up to 2 cups of food. This would be best for smaller breed pups. The regular feeder would be better suited for larger dogs, as it can hold up to 4 cups of food and measures 12.5 x 11 x 2.3 inches.

One of my dogs flips over her Bowl so I feed her on a baking pan. I need to slow down her feeding but I was wondering if this is easy for her to tip over?

Answer by ChewyNov 05, 2018
This bowl features a non-slip base to help hold the bowl in place. It may be possible to flip over if you have a very determined pet.

Is this a suitable bowl for a French bulldog (pushed in face )?

Answer by ChewySep 16, 2020
The dog uses their tongue to remove the food from the bowl, so the snout size (whether flat or long) would not determine which design is best.

Will this bowl work for water?

Answer by ChewyJun 16, 2019
Primarily, this bowl is used with food however, it may also be used for water.

No more food loogies

Oh yeah, you read that correctly. And as nasty as it sounds, believe me when I tell you it is even worse having to listen to and clean it up when your chonky dog decides he loves food too much to actually chew it. I mean, I inhale my food sometimes too, because who doesn’t love a tasty meal?! But dang! It was INCREDIBLY effective in slowing down his eating. As soon as I told my husband I ordered a slow feeding bowl, his first comment was about how Bowser will be so desperate to get to his food that he will probably dump it over so he can just inhale his food directly from the floor. Thankfully this is a nearly impossible scenario, because the bowl is designed in such a way that it is wide and low profile with a nice rubbery bottom, which makes it a little difficult to pick up after use but effective in keeping too smart for their own good doggies from tipping it over. So now, we can all enjoy our family dinner without listening to my dog hawk tuah on the floor. I’d call that a pretty amazing product!

Best way to slow fast eater and not just for dogs!

I tried all the different styles of the Outward Hound feeders with my new dog to see what would slow her down the most. Contrary to their guidelines, this purple one (4 cup) slowed her down much better and with less kibble tossed out of the bowl than the others. I think it's because she has to hunt around to find the pieces in all the little separate grooves, whereas with the orange and green spiral kinds, she just runs her tongue around the groove and has everything at once. She still finishes her food in minutes, but it's much better than in a SINGLE minute in a few huge gulps and then getting sick. I also use one of these purple bowls and the orange spiral in the smaller size for two of my cats' dry food at bedtime, since they would do a snarf-and-barf otherwise. They use their paws to fish out the pieces one by one and eat slowly, taking about as long to get their food out as it takes my special-needs little guy to finish his in a regular bowl. Highly recommended!

My dachshunds devour their food in a flash, and I initially assumed that their elongated snouts would hinder their ability to reach the kibble in their bowl. Surprisingly, that hasn’t posed any issues at all. The bowl is cleverly designed like a maze, transforming mealtime into an engaging adventure while effectively slowing down their eating pace. It features a nonslip base that keeps it securely in place, preventing any sliding or tipping during their enthusiastic feasting. I wholeheartedly recommend this bowl to any pet parent struggling with fast eaters or those who simply want to add a unique twist to their pets’ dining experience.

perfect for a long muzzle. prevents whisker fatigue.

my pup’s previous slow feeder had a shape that made it easy for her to shove her entire muzzle down into the bowl. she would jerk her head back before going back

my pup’s previous slow feeder had a shape that made it easy for her to shove her entire muzzle down into the bowl. she would jerk her head back before going back in- and i realized that the sides might be rubbing against her whiskers in an irritating way. this new slow feeder has grooves narrow enough that she can only get her tongue in there while the rest of her muzzle stays above the edges. i only take a star off because it’s plastic; a porous material that promotes bacteria. plastic feeders should be replaced every few months to avoid food poisoning and chin acne. i’m hoping to find a decent porcelain or metal slow feeder before i have to replace this one.

Food bowl slowed my dog’s meal time from 30 seconds to three minutes. With practice she has got it down to 1 1/2 minutes but she is no longer throwing up. Several things puzzled me when making my purchase. Dog size, snout size, amount of food in bowl etc. My dog is 29 pounds, she has a longer snout but looking at the channels of the food bowl, I was worried about how she would get her snout in them, she doesn’t which of course is the purpose of the bowl. I also didn’t see enough information on quantity of food versus size of bowl. I bought a mini. My pictures are distance and close up to help answer those questions for others. I feed her 1/3 cup twice a day which basically covers the floor of the bowl with one layer of kibbles which to me is optimal. If the food came up much higher she wouldn’t have to work at it. I didn’t account for the length of her tongue which helps her lift each piece out one or two at a time. She does have to work at it and she now stops to chew her food. Hope this helps!

Dog Feeder vs Bowl

I have two dogs. One is a Chihuahua and a Toy Poodle. The Chihuahua gobbles her food up as fast as possible. She has had some intestinal issues and it is apparent when she is not feeling good. She gives a sad look and won't eat. At the Veterinarian, they told me to give her 1/2 of a Pepcid when this happens, which I did, but I do not want to give my dogs this kind of medication on a regular basis. I purchased a raised feeding station in hopes that would work, but it didn't. Then I went on-line and found this Outward Hound Feeder. We've been using it for a few weeks now and it is the solution to her frenzie feedings. She has to work a little at a time to get her food. She went from eating in a matter of about 60 seconds in a regular bowl, and now it takes her about 15 minutes to eat her food. She has not had a single issue with her tummy since we started using this feeder. The other advantage of using one of these kinds of bowls is that the dog's brain is being challenged, which is a good thing as well.

Oh my god yes this definitely works! He’s a frenchie and pit mix, so he doesn’t have a short snout quite like the frenchies but not as long either, and he still eats out of it with ease. Sometimes the kibble flicks out of the bowl but he always cleans up his mess so I’m not worried about that part. Definitely rinse it as soon as he’s done eating because I could see how it can get gross and grimy in the corners if not attended to right away, but I hand wash mine too and don’t put it in the dishwasher because I know the bottom side will collect all the water. The first time he was definitely eating slower. Like ten minutes slower. The second day he thought I was tricking him and he didn’t want anything to do with it. The next day or two I made it more enticing with wet food but it was hard to mix in with the dry with the grooves the way they are. Then he realized this was the new norm and has figured out his own pattern to eat it faster, but still slower than he was.

My dogs have had the same two slow feeders for about 2-2.5 years. It was time to change things up. So I ordered these purple "flower" shaped feeders. It did help slow them down again, since they had gotten used to the others. My plan is to change things up from time to time to keep them from getting too used to one shape. Just for reference, a normal bowl takes them about 5-10 seconds to finish their food. The other slow feeder bowls take 3-5 minutes and the new ones are currently taking 7-10 minutes. I know they will get faster at it as they get used to it, but always better than the few seconds it takes them in a regular bowl. Picture is two pitbulls (about 74-76 pounds each) in their kennels after eating from their new bowls. The bowls are the Large 4-cup size.

Well unfortunately at first sight my ever so playful lab thought his new bowl was a toy. He knows what chewy boxes mean and he dove right in and grabbed it, box and all. Luckily it didn’t sustain enough damage to not be usable. I love it because he eats much slower and it seems is eating less. I’m also greatful that he has not treated his new bowl like a toy again. It’s a win for all of us.
