Chickens should have extra calcium available when they reach laying age (20 weeks). This supplement should not be added to their food, but be available to them. They will take a little themselves on a as needed basis. The purpose is to harden the egg shells and replace calcium used when they reach egg producing age.

My chickens won't eat it. It has a very strong smell of rancid oil. I feed the chickens with "wet" feed (cooked corn kernels). I mix the food with powdered calcium (I grind calcium pills into powder with a coffee bean grinder). Usually them fight for it and finish it in no time. I then grind some of this oyser shell and mix with the (wet) food. The chickens eat a little bit of it and then leave it alone. Apparently the smell of the rancid oil puts them off.

Necessity

This supplement is necessary for layers. I have it available at all times in its own dedicated feeder. The hens get it as needed. High quality item. Will buy

Chunks are too big for chickens, and that's whats pictured on the bag. My chickens want nothing to do with them, at first they tried to break them, but too hard. I was expecting something like the grit size. These would be for geese or maybe turkeys. NO, I do not recommend for chickens.

My chickens don’t have soft shells, but I provide this for them in a small dish as free choice while the free range in my yard. They peck at it here and there. I cannot speak on if it helps with soft shells or not though, as I purchased it for them as more of a preventative thing. This bag is lasting a long time for me as well, as it is free choice.

It Too Big

My chickens won’t touch it and I’m certain it’s because it’s so big. I’m saving it for when they get fully grown but even my laying hens eat everything but it,

I bought this product for my hens. They are hitting the laying stage. I figured this will help with egg shell Production. I mix it with their regular feed. They seem to enjoy it. I will see how effective it is on the shells. Overall it is a good product

The granules are too big

Another brand previously used seemed more crushed, making it easier for my chickens to ingest.

This product is way too big. My 6 hens won't touch it. And even if they did I'm sure it would be very hard on their digestive system it digestive at all. I've got an old spice grinder that I'll try to grind smaller, if not I'll be throwing it away. Don't waste your money.
