Will Never Use Another Starter

This is my second time using this starter/grower for my flock (added new chicks just this week) and I will never use another starter. The chicks are obsessed with it which promotes eating quickly from hatch and they grow like little weeds! Their feathering out is consistent and beautiful because of the quality of this product and they are in amazing health because of the quality ingredients. I love that I can keep them on this until laying. Forget the trendy kalmbach and scratch and peck crumbles. I love scratch and peck mash for formenting but no one beats this crumble.. it's absolutely magic.
Not good for small chicks
I bought this for my new chicks, but the feed is not finely ground it’s pretty chunky and has whole pellets in it. This feed would be fine for older chicks but for
I bought this for my new chicks, but the feed is not finely ground it’s pretty chunky and has whole pellets in it. This feed would be fine for older chicks but for hatchlings it needs to be ground up in a food processor or wet down before I can give it to them, which is a huge waste of time, and possible food waste as wet food spoils in the heat. I would not recommend this food for small chicks or bantam chicks.

I have been a backyard chicken keeper for about 12 years now. I am firm believer in Nutrena products and the Chick Starter Grower is top notch. You can actually smell the oregano, thyme, and rosemary when you open the bag. I also really like that it's full of probiotics. A healthy gut is a healthy immune system. My chicks devour this food, they are growing really well, are active, and have great feather quality coming in. I wouldn't feed any other brand.

They really do. They go wild for it. They eat all of the solid pieces out of it, then take dust baths in what remains. It's a little bit of a waste with all of the

Might try making a mash with all of the powdery dust for them and try to get then to take their dust baths in the dirt.

I actually have been using this product for a while. As a chick starter it's a bit lower in protein than I prefer, as I raise heritage large fowl and 24% is a better
I actually have been using this product for a while. As a chick starter it's a bit lower in protein than I prefer, as I raise heritage large fowl and 24% is a better starter, then 20% as a grower. HOWEVER, I use this product as a winter ration for most of my flock. I like the fact the it has no added calcium, it's an excellent low protein all flock option with flocks mixed with breeding males, for which I prefer no calcium feeds. I allow my hens free choice oyster shell and give their eggshells back to them for calcium and have never had an issue with fragile shells. Nutrena in general is known for being an excellent quality feed with a reasonable amino acid profile and I appreciate the added oregano oil (you can smell it when you open the bag). Ive used other feeds that were cheaper and have always switched back, my birds just do better. If you were to use this as a chick starter (and I have) it's absolutely fine and your chicks will thrive.
