Can this tablet be ground up into a powder?

Answer by MascMar 23, 2026
No, per instructions tablets should given whole, not broken in half or chewed as it reduces the effectiveness of absorption and defeats the special coating to prevent it dosdolving to soon once ingested.

Can the tablet form for large dogs be broken into pieces before administering?

Answer by MascMar 23, 2026
NO. “Denamarin liver supplement tablets should not be broken, crushed, or ground. They are enteric-coated to protect the ingredients from stomach acid and to mask a bitter taste; breaking them reduces their effectiveness.” “Key Considerations for Denamarin Administration: Do Not Crush/Split: The tablet's coating is crucial for efficacy.”

Is this a chewable tablet?

Juanita started to show elevated liver numbers on March 23, and even the vet thought she wouldn't make it. So we started Denamarin one hour before breakfast (as it is recommended to have empty stomach, one hour prior to meal or two hours after) twice a day for two weeks and then once daily since then. Because she was having a crisis that could be caused by a tumor or something else, we tried "Hepar comp." from Heel (a German homeopathy product), injected once every other day with the dose recommended by a vet, until we finished ten ampoules (about three weeks). After that, we have been just maintaining Denamarin, Royal Canin Hepatic mixed with fresh food that I cook for her and her 10-year old sister. So in summary, between April 12 and June 26 her ALT reduced from "244" to "96", her ALP was "1702" on March 23, reduced to "987" in April 12 and last time we checked in June 26 it was "336". Still high but the recovery was impressive for a 13-year old lab. Although we're not sure which specific treatment is working, our vet advised us to continue with the current regimen. Despite the possibility of a tumor, the medication has provided her with quality time and happiness, and we are grateful for the time we get to spend with her.

Not a complete fix-it, but incredibly helpful!

Vet recommended Denamarin after bloodwork for my 10yr old dog showed some higher range liver values, particularly his ALT and ALP. Checked back in after giving him this for a month, and the levels have decreased slightly. His ALT went from 207>161 (-46) and ALP from 656>545 (-111). Definitely acknowledge that this isn't a complete fix-it for whatever underlying issue is causing these values to go so high, but happy that it does show some effectiveness and helping protect his liver. The tablets are on the larger side and I give it to him in a pill pocket every morning an hour or so before breakfast. He hasn't had any adverse reactions to the Denamarin either. My main criticism is the pricing, as it is unfortunately on the more expensive side and has already increased in price since I bought it last. I may consider looking into other alternatives that contain the same active ingredients if it continues to go up.

Ever since my 9 YO Pitbull mix turned 7, she has had fluctuating ALT #s in her bi-yearly bloodwork checkups, averaging anywhere from 145 - mid 200s. She got her bloodwork done recently in April 2024 and it was back in the 200s, and we still have no idea what is causing the spikes (she even got an ultrasound on her stomach and everything, including her liver, looked good and normal). Vet recommended putting her indefinitely on Demamarin to see what would happen. After 17 days of use, my dog’s ALT dropped from 215 back to 145 (high end of the normal range is 125). Thankfully my dog is basically a ‘garbage disposal’ so eating things has never been a problem for her.. she will inhale her pill with just a little peanut butter on it, no problem! With that quick of a numbers turn around, I have and will definitely be continuing this supplement with her here on out.

Researched for my Geriatric Labrador

I have a 12 year old lab who was diagnosed 2 years ago with GOLPP. This is similar to ALS in humans. Mind works, but body degrades slowly. She was also at that same time put on daily max dose of Rimadyl for her arthritic knees. I read up on the Rimadyl doses causing liver damage when used at regular doses so I knew that this was not something I needed for my lovely Athena. I saw where Denamarin for the liver support was supposed to be off the charts. Sure enough. I took her in just last week for some other issues (that I thought would turn out to be pancreatic and they ended up being an intestinal infection! Whew) and they did a complete blood work on my lab. The vet said, wildly enough for even a senior labrador, she had all within normal range lab work come back . I told her I had the dog on Phibro Cholodin for the GOLPP to help with hind end weakness and nerve damage and also this Denamarin which she was only familiar with the Denamarin. She really was impressed with the labs coming back so high in range. That was good news. I am glad Chewy got it back in stock. We had run out of Denamarin about a month ago and the labs still came back within normal ranges. Testament to the supplement!

I am just starting my 12 year old on this after routine blood work showed some liver issues. Since he appears well, and we feel we caught something early which may be causing his liver values to be a bit off...but due to his age, and he looks fantastic and feels great, I am starting him on and keeping him on this. I have had 2 dogs in the past be far along, even turning yellow from liver issues, and both times this product helped save their lives and gave them many more years of healthy life. My dog will stay on this for life as long as his Vet feels it is wise. I can't say enough about Denamarin for liver issues. Talk to your vet.

Difficult to administer to my senior dog and made him nauseated

I fully realize Denamarin is the standard of care for dogs with elevated liver enzymes, and if pet owners can make it work for their dog, I'd definitely stick with it. But for my dog, since it's supposed to be given on an empty stomach, I had to cram a large pill down my senior boy's throat every morning, as he refused to eat the chewable version. Getting the pill down him got progressively more difficult, it got to the point where it was just a huge battle we both dreaded. Also, about half the time I got the pill into him, he'd vomit within a half an hour. It clearly was making him nauseated, as he started refusing his food as well. So I finally quit giving it to him and switched to a liver supplement without SAM-e, which can be given in a pill pocket with food. I'm guessing it's not as effective, but the Denamarin just wasn't going to work for him.

My girl had high liver levels for quite awhile. She did not have any symptoms of liver disease just the high levels. I started giving her the denamarin and her numbers are steadily going down. I also found out thru research that it is also good for brain health. She is 12 years young and I swear she is getting smarter. One of her nicknames is Doodles b/c she was a little dingy, not now, she is on the ball, alert and ready for anything.

Unsure of effectiveness

Just a supplement, not a miracle cure - Back in August my dog presented with elevated liver enzymes. My vet recommended Denamarin. We didn't see much, if any, decrease in her levels by December when we went to a specialist. After working with the specialist, who added another liver specific medication, we did see a drastic decrease. All that to say, I'm not sure this supplement has helped any. The specialist has even shared that we could go off of this since she doesn't believe it's making a difference either. That's not the pills fault, so no stars were taken off for that. Difficult to take - It is very difficult to get her to take this pill. A - it's huge. My dog isn't what I would consider a large dog, but her weight puts her in the large pill category. I have tried disguising the pill in peanut butter, chicken, pill pockets, and nothing worked except putting it the back of her mouth where she has no choice but the swallow it. The weight range for the Large dog is so broad. The first month she took this, her vet gave her the wrong size (the pill for medium dogs) and she swallowed that no problem. It's just such a drastic difference. New coating - Some reviews I've seen have mentioned always having the blue coating, but for us that has been pretty recent. The coating is terrible and comes off on your fingers. The pills that have the coating on them also tend to make my dog sick. All that to say. I don't think it's a bad product, but definitely not for every dog.
