How much weight to a cup of feed? Trying to figure out how much I will need for a month supplying

Answer by DH1010Apr 08, 2025
It's my experience that a 25lb bag can handle 75 cups conservatively. Not sure the actual weight, I'm basing this on my own usage.

What is the sodium content of this food? I’m trying to research for my picky dog who loves this food but was recommended to be on kidney support food.

This states potato free recipe but lists potato in ingredients? Which is correct ?

Answer by ChewyJul 21, 2018
This food contains no white potatoes. Sweet potatoes are not the same as white potatoes. They come from a different family, are high in fiber/low in fat, and are a healthier, lower carb alternate to white potatoes. Sweet potatoes also contains large amounts of vitamins A,C,E, B5&6, potassium and manganese (manganese – trace mineral needed for growth, development and metabolism).

Are any of the ingredients sourced from China?

Answer by ChewyApr 13, 2020
Merrick sources the world's best ingredients from the best producers. Most of their ingredients come from the USA, however, in certain circumstances some ingredients may come from another country (like lamb from New Zealand) to ensure the highest quality possible. Merrick currently works with one trusted partner in China to source Vitamin B, which is an essential nutrient for dogs and cats. Vitamin supplements account for less than 1% (~.02%) of the total raw ingredients (by weight) in their recipes [and Vitamin B, specifically, is less than .01%] but ensure that every single serving of their food gives your pet the complete nutrition they need. Since 2012, they've worked with the same trusted partner to source Vitamin B. They remain the best option for both the supply Merrick needs and the quality they want for this ingredient. They recently opened operations in China, and remain confident in their ability to produce high-quality Vitamin B for their recipes to ensure they are delivering the nutrition that pets need.

I feel like this is one of the better kibbles I’ve found. I have a picky, 5 year old, 65 lb Australian Shepard/beagle/lab mix who used to get atopic dermatitis really badly. He would break out on his chest and shoulders and head in pustules, it was bad. He’s been doing really well on this food now for about a year. I add a little hot water to it and he goes nuts. The vet recommended Science Diet (crap), or Royal Canid Hydrolyzed protein(also nutritionally crap) and he was on that for a year. Getting cytopoint allergy shots and treatments, we tried apoquel, allergy tests, etc. He was on American Journey Lamb and sweet potato after because my friends were having good results but eventually his skin got bad again, paw licking, and ear infections bad, the whole 9 yards. After some research I came across some articles that said potatoes and chick peas/lentils can be not good for their gut bacteria and overall health. I scoured chewy for a food like that, and this and the similar pork one were the only ones that met the criteria. No potatoes, no peas or lentils I think has really helped. Either that or he’s finally grown out of it.... I have a half a bag of American Journey Lamb and sweet Potato limited ingredient left and I think that was making him worse. I tried to transition it in 1/4 at a time but his skin got bad again. I wish I could feed him something consistently other than kibble but it’s just how it is. Eventually I’d like to transition him to fresh, raw foods and meals. I don’t like the pork meal and meal’s in general. I wish there was a way for them to get it into kibble or make things in short batches without preservatives and processed ingredients. Honestly I wanted to give this a 4 star review but it’s been doing well so far I couldn’t, haha. I had one bag come ripped and chewy was good enough to replace it, I didn’t want to risk giving that to my dog. The Omega-3 content is good, but could be higher in relation to the Omega-6 content... overall it has a good spectrum of supplements and ingredients and my dog has been doing really well and loves it. I try to transition some of the pork one in as well. Hopefully good in the long term. Will update if anything changes.

I have used this dog food for over a year. I have a 2 year old Boxer and 13 year old Shar pei. And I now have a young boxer on it too. Yup, 3 dogs that go through a lot of food. My old man the Shar pei is doing wonderful on the Classic Beef, he's very spry, healthy and looks a lot younger than he should. FYI, Shar pei's live to 10, this dog food has a hand in keeping him with us longer. The 2 yr old boxer was very allergic when young (hives, digestive issues, etc) and I had to switch food brands many times to get one that agreed with him. Merrick Classic Beef recipe did the trick and he has been healthy with no allergy issues for over a year and he has the most gorgeous silky coat. I highly recommend this product as a high-end dog food that doesn't hurt your wallet.

DO NOT PURCHASE - ZERO STARS

ZERO STAR RATING I have fed this food to my dog for quite a while with few problems. But some changes have happened with the food the last year, and it isn't good

ZERO STAR RATING I have fed this food to my dog for quite a while with few problems. But some changes have happened with the food the last year, and it isn't good. The kibble is almost all crushed and smells different. My dog no longer liked eating it. He was becoming very tired, would have vomiting, diarrhea; started to have dry skin and very rough hair, would chew on feet, scratch, and constantly lick his feet and legs. He was miserable until I changed his food. I changed to Hill's Science Diet Adult 7+ Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Dry Dog Food. Within one week he was so much better! His stools are firm and no longer vomiting. His hair became very soft, stopped chewing and licking, loved eating food again and regained lots of energy. I am unsure what Merrick has changed, and I DO NOT recommend this food.

Merrick dog food packaging is defective and needs quality control inspection don

Chewy is an amazing company and stand by their customer -100% satisfaction guaranteed and will replace every bag that is damaged. Every bag that I received in total 5 to 6 have been replaced free and Chewy continues replacing and I had to tell them to stop because each bag continues coming over damaged in the same area. In my opinion, there is a defect in the manufacture of their bag design that is not strong enough to hold the dog food during shipping or maybe the bag isn’t strong enough to hold the food. The bags that are not properly, strong enough to hold the dog food and always open in the same area. I’m not sure when this happens and how long it’s been open, but it is not safe for your pet and the food is not cheap either. This puts you in a strange predicament as to call Chewy and send photos to prove the damage bag. I don’t like doing this because it makes me feel awkward because it seems like you’re looking for free food when every bag comes damaged. I just want a bag of dog food from Merrick for my boy because I can’t buy anything else for him to eat - so I am stuck. Please make this right merrick you are costing me money because I have to go out and buy a local bag until chewy sends a replacement. I have been compensated by Chewy and they have done the right thing, but I cannot continue ordering this brand of dog food through delivery because every bad comes over damaged and I am back to why, so I would hopefully appreciate someone from the food dog food company will see this and make some changes quickly because I am not happy. You’re costing me money though I have been compensated, but I also have lost money too. and you , have to to the local shelter. I have nothing bad to say about Chewy nor do I have anything bad to say about Merrick dog food product for my dog - it’s the bag design that hold the food is not strong enough. Make it right and get with your team and fix it. I am not the only person with this issues and I will be calling Merrick and be happy to send over all the damage photos of the bags . I will recommend the product because it is good for my dog to eat so that is why I am saying I would recommend this item. The only thing I do not recommend is the design of the bag that is causing issues with the bag opening and having to be replaced over and over, so it’s time we change and fix the issue at hand .

This kibble has been a nice change from chicken, and has some grain to offset the high sulfur in a meat only diet. I will note that I don't serve it without adding extra protein for my dogs such as lightly cooked eggs, sometimes a chicken drumstick (sans bone), pork shoulder, etc. I always cook meat on the bone to have juice and collagen because I have young, active big dogs that need more protein. Beef kidney is also added to the mix for additional taurine, which also helps reduce sulfur and thus reduce the risk of heart failure in their later adult years causing early demise. (Uk and Europe have a taurine requirement and we don't plus most dog foods add very little compared to european requirements, which very based on activity of the animal) Additionally, I do add a pre and probiotic vitamin supplement, and sometimes pumpkin because they eat "stuff" in the woods outside and need digestive help ;) I find this product is a good base to start with and build my dogs' individual nutritional needs from there. That is why 4 stars, but I would not feed any kibble without adding what my dogs actually need to it.

So far so good!

With food sensitivities we are always vigilant with what our Freddy eats. We were noticing issues with the Blue Buffalo and are trying a transition to the Merrick. He enjoys it (he's a lab though and basically enjoys all food) and his digestive issues seem to be improving. Going to buy a second, larger bag to mix in and then complete the switch next time, if all continues to go well.
