how much of this do i give my guinea pig in a day?

Answer by ChewySep 30, 2020
Feed free choice to guinea pigs, along with plenty of fresh clean water. Supplemental food items may be provided but should not make up more than 20% of the total diet. Care should be taken to choose appropriate supplemental food items. Mature guinea pigs may benefit from higher fiber, lower protein food items (e.g., grass hay), while growing, gestating, or lactating guinea pigs may benefit from higher protein food items (e.g., alfalfa hay). Guinea pigs may be provided vegetables (predominantly dark leafy greens) and limited fruit (less than 5% of total intake) to provide enrichment.

Many foods marketed for guinea pigs are inappropriate. They should not be fed seeds or dyed chunks of mystery food. Timothy hay based pellets are ideal. This is produced by Land O Lakes, which makes a wide range of zoo animal feeds and was what the private zoo owners I adopted my guinea pigs from were using. I don't like that there is a clear window on the bag. Vitamin C degrades with exposure to light and air, so even though the bag says the Vitamin C is stabilized, I store it in a dark closet. Of course my boys also get fresh veggies, fruit and hay daily in addition to Mazuri guinea pig pellets.

I rescued 3 Guinea pigs going 3 yrs from a horrible home , at the time the it was over 15 yrs since we had guinea pigs so I had no supplies , so I contacted a guinea pig rescue & on the rescue's website they feed all their pigs Mazuri , I never heard of this brand of food so I went on chewy & they had it so I ordered it . It took the pigs I rescued 3 months to eat pellets & hay , which they were never fed , they lived on cat food & carrots & ice berg lettuce before I rescued them . I feel this food was the key to get them healthy & now it is what is keeping them healthy , except for the fresh fruit & hay & kale they get every day , they only get 1/4 cup of pellets a day each , They are so healthy now & the vet is amazed from the time I took them to just 6 months afterwards & now they keep a bag in their office to let other piggie owners know what they like to feed their pigs too .

I am a SKINNY (Hairless Exotic) Guinea Pig breeder and my herd loves Mazuri pellets. These piggies are expensive costing from $125 to $325 and I have never lost a pig on this feed. They go on ground transport across the USA and need to be healthy and hefty to handle transport stress since they are the smallest variety of guinea pigs. With autoship it's cheaper and less work to have it delivered. I appreciate Chewys delivery instead of having to run out to get it, haul it from the car into the caviary and risk it being out of stock with the supply chain issues from the pandemic. I recommend it to all my buyers.

I really thought I had found another guinea pig food that would be good for my 7 boys, but after a week ,I had to. Change my mind. I compared the ingredients to another popular brand and fat was the biggest difference. They guinea boys loved it, but after a week it made their stool really mushy. I had to switch back to my original brand. Even thought this was cheaper, I had to think of my boys and their overall health. If they ever decide to lessen the fat content like the brand I am using now , I would definitely think of trying it out again.

This stuff is overflowing with healthiness. It looks healthy. It smells healthy. It even tastes healthy (blah). I get plenty of energy to popcorn all day (boink boink boink boink). But it is boring and bland. So, if you are going to use this as your main food, remember the treats, okay? But you can't beat the overall quality.
