The filter does not include an air pump or any filter media, as tank needs may vary. This versatile filter may be used for biological, chemical, or mechanical filtration, depending on the media chosen for use in the filter. It is great for breeder tanks, isolation tanks, for a beginner aquarist, and may also be used as the fundamental or back-up filter.

This filter will work fine if your very careful with a couple of issues. If The bubbler tube gets tweaked even a little by filter media the top will not line up, you will not be able to snap the top back on, and the plastic will shatter .. Also if you leave any voids in the corner by the air line the water will bypass all the media and just run in and out unfiltered. The Better Design has the air tube in the center of the filter box.. Bought 4 was able to get 2 functioning, Got some spare parts now.. .. So If you're going to run air into your tank it might as well be pushing water through some charcoal and Floss.. Sponges and Foams just don't keep your water clear

Used some aquarium gravel in the filter’s bottom to “hold it down”, along with a little bit of “filter floss“ to trap particles, etc. I was very impressed with the filtration power as evidenced by the discoloration and debris captured in the filter floss, and even in the intake vents of the filter!!! These things work! The small version of the filter is prone to damage and breakage if mishandled, but, I would hardly recommend it due to its effectivity!!!
