I realized my dog weighs 19 pounds I bought him a size medium is that ok or should I change to small

Answer by JennApr 27, 2026
19 pounds still fits within the size range for a medium. More important than the pound range is whether you dog can fit the whole toy in their mouth. you do NOT want them to be able to fit the whole toy in their mouth, as that is a choking hazard. They should be able to pick up/hold on to it, without the widest part of the toy actually fitting to where they could accidentally swallow it get it stuck in their mouth. The size you chose is likely perfect for now, just re-evaluate as your pup grows!

What size is the opening of the big end on a medium sized Kong?

Answer by ChewySep 19, 2018
The opening of the Small Kong is 0.72 inch. The opening of the Medium Kong is 1 inch. The opening of the Large Kong is 1 inch. The opening of the X-Large Kong is 1.31 inches. The opening of the XX-Large Kong is 1.56 inches.

CHEMICAL TASTE, WHITE POWDER, QUALITY WENT WAY DOWN

I’ve had three dogs over the years that have enjoyed kongs, and we’ve gone through about maybe 15 of them. In April, I recently purchased two medium size red ones

I’ve had three dogs over the years that have enjoyed kongs, and we’ve gone through about maybe 15 of them. In April, I recently purchased two medium size red ones from chewy for my senior dogs who are 13 and 11. when they arrived they were covered with a white powder and were dull with a chemical smell instead of the glossy red that they always have been. I washedthem and try to get the powder off And there’s still a permanent donuts and white powder aspect. You can see in the photos I put peanut butter in them and gave them to my dogs and they started licking, but then would walk away and lick their lips like it tasted bad. I then licked the Kong myself and it burned with an acid chemical taste, no matter how many times I washed them that taste was still there, and I was not going to risk letting my dogs play with something that could be poisonous or toxic. It seems Kong has changed whatever material they used to use to something cheaper and full of chemicals and lower quality I’m very disappointed.

Important to inspect after each use

I find Kongs to be pretty reliable for moderate to aggressive chewers, but I will say it's important to inspect them after each use. I just bought 3 medium Kongs

I find Kongs to be pretty reliable for moderate to aggressive chewers, but I will say it's important to inspect them after each use. I just bought 3 medium Kongs in April and rotate them in between hand washings. Needless to say I was surprised that the one in the photo was already destroyed and had to be tossed in the garbage. I rotate, inspect, and hand wash them after each use, so I don't feel there's a lot of wear and tear to warrant this Kong already breaking down. Plus my dog is pretty smart so she knows how to get the snacks out relatively easy so she doesn't chew on them very long. You can see in the photo after three months that the chew marks are pretty minimal. They do make a black Kong for aggressive chewers and I might have to switch to it. Despite not getting the longevity I would like, I would still buy Kongs and recommend to others.

Disappointed in the durability

I have been buying a less expensive brand for years, but it has been out of stock for a while so I ordered 2 original Kongs for Christmas to get me by. Both of them

I have been buying a less expensive brand for years, but it has been out of stock for a while so I ordered 2 original Kongs for Christmas to get me by. Both of them tore up with just one use and are pretty much unuseable now, as I don’t want to risk pieces breaking off and being swallowed. My dog is not a particularly tough chewer, either. I will be going back to the less expensive and much more durable brand from now on.

My Dog's Pacifier

First of all, we LOVE Chewy! Jack knows when it's a delivery for him. He goes nuts over an unopened Chewy box, and doesn't even know what's inside yet! So Jack is

First of all, we LOVE Chewy! Jack knows when it's a delivery for him. He goes nuts over an unopened Chewy box, and doesn't even know what's inside yet! So Jack is an Australian Cattle Dog, who was bred and trained to work cattle. He got hurt and was not able to continue to be employed, so we got him and found that he needed something to "hog around" with in his mouth while he showed the World how tough he was. The Kong Classic Toy does a good job of making Jack appear quite tough, and it holds up very well to his bite force. He travels around the backyard with his Kong in his mouth, and it seems to be a necessity to find if he happens to have left it somewhere. So Kong is a great toy for dogs, especially working breeds that currently aren't working at their regular jobs, and are instead patrolling the backyard. We buy the red Classic Kong in the Winter, and the black Kong in the warmer months. We found that the black one gets hard as a rock in the cold temps, and Jack just didn't feel as cool with it. Thank you again Chewy for delivering all Jack's stuff to my door. I appreciate you!

White exterior "powdery" residue that soap and water does not clean off!!

I have already spoken by phone with Chewy kind and caring customer service person Lindsey L. and she has processed refund and will be looking into this problem further

I have already spoken by phone with Chewy kind and caring customer service person Lindsey L. and she has processed refund and will be looking into this problem further. (Note: in addition to the exterior problem, the interior smells "chemically," like something close to kerosene.) I am not the first person to have this same problem as seen by two other people's review for the same problem. I am only sending this written review after the fact so that I can attach a photo of what the 12 small Kongs I ordered looked like both when I received them and still after each was given a soap and water bath.

Something not right with these kongs.

My dogs love their kongs and they hold up really well so in January 2025 I bought two more to add to the rotation... and they just don't look right! They look like they're covered in chalk, but it doesn't wipe off. See the picture I've attached- this is after putting all the kongs through the dishwasher. The new ones are on the left, the older ones are on the right.

My husband and I do animal rescue drives every few weeks. The dogs come from a high kill shelter in Kentucky. We along with many drives and overnight foster care workers are involved . We drive one leg of a relay to get them to either their adopting families , foster care homes or animal rescue centers so we can save these poor dogs from being put down. During our one hour drive to drop the dogs off to the next driver I decided we should buy some toys so they can play with them while we transport them. I put peanut butter in the Kong toy and it kept one dog busy most of the trip. Very study and strong toy that they seem to love.

Great for home alone training with an anxious dog

My dog is deeply attached and displays separation anxiety. She used to try to run out the door with us, and we'd hear her whimpering and barking as we returned home

My dog is deeply attached and displays separation anxiety. She used to try to run out the door with us, and we'd hear her whimpering and barking as we returned home. We tried calming treats, pheromones, toys, and containment... no matter what, she'd be panicked and upset. Then we started training her with the Kong. She only gets her Kong when we're going away, and she has to sit on a special rug to have it handed to her, as we tell her to stay and be a good girl. Filled with some of her favorite treats and a Kong jerky to hold it in, sometimes she'll still be working on it when we return 3-4 hours later. She's much happier than panicked now, and neighbors confirm that the barking has stopped.
