Questions & Answers

10 Customer Questions

Are the pieces small enough for bantams, silkies and seramas?

Answer by ChewyMar 28, 2023
This feed can be fed to all types of poultry. If you have very small genetic lines of bantams or very delicate silkies, then a small crumble may be your best option. However, we have many flocks with bantams, silkies, and seramas that are using Chickhouse Reserve.

Is this feed medicated?

Answer by ChewyMar 25, 2024
This feed is not medicated. It contains a proprietary blend of prebiotics, probiotics, essential oils, diatomaceous earth, and enzymes to support digestive, immune and health function.

Is this feed GMO free?

Answer by ChewyMar 16, 2023
This formula is not GMO free.

Can I give this feed to a few days old chicks? Should I also give them chick grits with this feed?

Answer by ChewyFeb 27, 2026
Feed continuously as the sole ration on a free choice basis from hatch to laying age, approximately 16 weeks of age. Always provide shelter and a continuous supply of fresh, clean water.

Our birds love this feed. Unfortunately the last two bags delivered yesterday have grain mites that I didn’t see until today. One was placed in our garage stored next to our other feed, which contaminated another bag of feed. The other went directly into our office where our 2 month old chicks are. Both bags this morning were covered with mites. The 4 dog toys that came also had mites on them and I unfortunately threw them on the guest bed. Chewy replaced all the items, but now I have to deep clean and try to get rid of grain mites in our house! Be cautious of all new bags of feed this is the second round Kalmbach feed that contained grain mites, both were different types of feed.

Wanted to get something high protein to add into my coturnix quails’ feed that had some variety. The Chickhouse Reserve seemed pretty promising, and lots of chicken lovers seemed to like the Henhouse Reserve. I was a bit skeptical since it had a few bad reviews and photos, but I was very pleasantly surprised when I opened the bag to a great batch of feed! It smells wonderful, better than any feed I’ve bought so far, like sourdough bread. It’s got lots of lentils, seeds and grains in it too. Not at all dusty, either! This was my first time purchasing a Kalmbach feed, I’ll definitely be coming back for more.

A Very Noticible Difference

Chicks are hardy, don’t have pasty butt and grow well. The times I’ve run out and had to substitute a normal feed store chick feed I saw a marked decline in growth

Chickhouse Reserve is 10 stars!! I had an unexpected brood of baby chicks, so I bought some baby chick feed from our local TS, however the chicks were trying to eat the Kalmbach Henhouse Reserve I feed their mommies, and not eating much of the highest reviewed chick feed I had purchased. Now everyone is happy, happy, happy with their Kalmbach feed and growing so fast!

This feed is not recommended

My 4 month old chicks they were fed exclusively Chickhouse reserve starter all showed symptoms of “Curled Toe paralysis “ which is a Vitamin B 2 deficiency caused

My 4 month old chicks they were fed exclusively Chickhouse reserve starter all showed symptoms of “Curled Toe paralysis “ which is a Vitamin B 2 deficiency caused by a lack of vitamins . I started to question this type of feed and after researching the disease it’s clear that they were definitely deficient. If you continue to use it -be very dedicated to also supplementing Vit-B 2 and B-12 riboflavin to their diets as this is Not recommended as a complete feed source .

Chicks love it!

I got my girls when they were 6 weeks old already. I feed my hens the henhouse reserve so I bought a bag of this for the little ones. They absolutely love it!

I got my girls when they were 6 weeks old already. I feed my hens the henhouse reserve so I bought a bag of this for the little ones. They absolutely love it! I do think they pick out their favorite bits but they all seem to have different favorite bits so it seems to work out. They are growing fast and their feathers look great and they are all healthy.
