Should/could this be fed to wild ducks and geese?

Answer by ChewyMay 21, 2020
This may be fed continuously as the sole ration to ducks and geese (over 4 weeks), pullets (6-16 weeks) and gamebirds (over 14 weeks). Feed continuously as the sole ration to growing chickens, ducks, geese and gamebirds from 6 weeks to laying age or market weight. This product can also be used as a maintenance feed for mature flocks of non-producing poultry.

Does this food float in water?

Answer by ChewyAug 19, 2021
Kalmbach Feeds are not designed to float.

Besides oyster shell, what else would I need to supplement this feed with to create a multi-flock layer feed? (And/or what can I add to boost protein?) I have chickens, ducks, and a goose all laying right now and at our location the ground is still too frozen/wintery for any good forging.

Answer by ChewyMar 23, 2021
If you want to use this feed for laying birds, all you need to provide is a free-choice source of calcium like the oyster shell mentioned or limestone chips. Adult female ducks and geese have similar nutrient requirements as adult chickens. If all of the birds are female and lay regularly, you may also consider our Kalmbach Feeds All Natural Non-GMO 17% Protein Layer Crumbles (or pellets) Chicken Feed.

There is no results for what "non-producing poultry" means, exactly. Does this mean until laying age? Then what do you feed mixed flocks?

Answer by ChewyJul 11, 2022
Non-Producing poultry means Non-Laying Poultry for this food.

I have been using this feed for a while with my mixed flock. I have chickens, ducks, and geese. I got to the bottom of my last bag, and it was moldy. There were huge clumps of molded food. Yesterday, my main rooster wasn't acting right. He was lethargic and not with his flock. He was closing his eyes, standing up, and lying down next to the coop. I had to call the vet. I had not yet discovered the molded food. Thankfully, today he is better and back with his flock after some TLC. I found the moldy food this morning and showed it to my husband. I should have taken a picture before throwing it away. It was the whole quarter or less of the bottom of the feed that was moldy. I'm positive this is what was wrong with my rooster. I went through and tossed my whole flock's food. I also keep all my food in containers and store it in a building separate from my animals. What a waste of feed. I'm more upset that I almost lost my main rooster; he's the best!

This used to be the fancy "expensive" boutique brand that I couldn't afford. Then when feed prices for the generic brand went up at the local feed store, I just switched the gals over to all-Kalmbach, all the time. This is when I realized that even when I was paying a lesser price for the cheap-quality food, it wasn't saving me any money after all because of all the powder that would form at the bottom of the feeder that no one would touch. In a glorious epiphany I realized that unlike the feed-store brands, Kalmbach leaves virtually NO powder at the bottom of the feeder, which means *nothing is wasted.* Also, when you open the bag, it smells like fresh bread, which makes me feel all kinds of warm feelings. And finally, the chickens crave and covet their Kalmbach like nobody's business. This was underscored one week when I forgot to order their Kalmbach. When I apologetically poured the old, generic feed-store brand into their feeder, all my chickens turned up their beaks in disgust. After a few unenthusiastic pecks, they turned back to me expectantly, looking for the Kalmbach. After a few days of lowkey hunger striking, the chickens grimly accepted some *very expensive* organic lay pellets from the feed store mixed with some popular Purina brand of crumbles, but the mood was dour. The feeder slowly emptied, but their was an absence in the chicken yard -- the light in their chicken eyes and the sparkle in their step were gone. After a week of this languid vibe, the Kalmbach order finally arrived. In a wild blur of beaks, the chickens descended upon the feeder and ate and ate and ate.... and all was right again in Chicken Land. May they never run out of their precious Kalmbach feed again.

This is the only feed I will buy for my pets. It is great not to worry about my roosters getting gout from layer feed or not meeting their nutritional needs from chick feed. I was having constant health issues and vitamin deficiencies with my silkies before I switched to Kalmbach flock maintainer. Not sure about the reviews saying it stinks, it smells so good I've been tempted to taste it! Make sure you supplement oyster shells with this if you have hens, and extra protein when needed. I do wish that there was a crumble version of this for my tiny bantams, but they do ok with the pellets.

I have a mixed flock of hens, roosters, and geese. I had been feeding different feed store foods for years, but my roosters in particular always seemed to get sick after a few years and die. Turns out layer feed has much too much calcium for roosters, resulting in gout, which kills them slowly and painfully. I finally found this food which has less calcium and an appropriate amount of protein for geese to boot. No more mixing all different foods, no more powdery bags. I recommend this food to anyone with a mixed flock and who cares about their rooster's health and longevity.

Our Khaki Campbell ducks have always loved this feed (they always run up to us quacking in the morning in anticipation of their breakfast). Recently we switched from Kalmbach Flock Maintainer to the Kalmbach Duck & Goose feed (I don't know if Chewy recently added more duck feed options since we first started the autoship or if I had just missed it) after I wanted to re-evaluate their feed since my daughter sells their eggs. A few weeks prior to that we switched to something high quality, organic and natural (Mile Four feed, which I was excited about but our ducks wouldn't touch- they were very angry with me). Then I switched to the Kalmbach Duck & Goose Feed because I thought it would be more tailored to the benefits of our ducks, plus we currently only have ducks. Instead, they will pick at it, but still aren't happy. So back to the Kalmbach flock maintainer.

Rooster food

My rooster, Lucky, loves this. I just wish it came in a smaller bag. I am 75 years young and it is hard to lift 50 pounds.

My two boy Muscovy ducks love this stuff! They’re wild ducks whose mother left them in my flower bed as eggs thinking they wouldn’t hatch, but they did! I raised them for two months, took them to a local bird rescue, and three months later when the rescue released them into the wild, they found me again! They come everyday to eat and visit now! I love my boys and they love this food! We will buy it for life!

Product claims to have enough niacin to support ducks and geese

Seems To be a great "all flock" feed so far. My ducks are walking fine with the niacin levels. Well except for Darrell, she's just fat and clumsy though.
