Can I feed my cat other dry and wet food at the same time if they eat this formula? Or do I have to feed this formula exclusively for it to be effective

Answer by CatDadApr 04, 2025
We feed our cats this and the regular chicken entree wet food with no problems.

“ Whole Grain Wheat, Corn Protein Meal, Powdered Cellulose, Chicken Fat, Wheat Gluten, Brewers Rice,” Why is this crap added to their dry food? I don’t want to be feeding crap to my PeppermintPatty! Why can’t Hills make a modern, more natural urinary/KD food!!! Their science is old!!!!!

What's the reason for the change I the food? What happens if my cat gets sick

What is the ash percentage of this formula? (It's relevant for cats with urinary tract issues.)

Answer by ChewyJan 12, 2018
The Urinary Hairball Control Dry Cat food has 5.5% Ash on a Dry Matter basis.

Before the manufacturer changed the ingredients without telling the consumer or Chewy! this was always a staple in our home. All 4 of my cats are males and I appreciated the Urinary tract recipe that my vet told us helped with crystals that can show up in their urinary system. The last bag I ordered was definitely not the same as the others, which I noticed immediately. Within 24 hours, all 4 of my cats had severe diarrhea and vomiting. After looking it up on the internet, I found there are NUMEROUS cat owners with the same problem. I thank CHEWY for refunding my $, but I do NOT appreciate Hills changing the ingredients behind my back just so they can make more $. I can't find the older formula anywhere.

The formula change made my cats very sick. They were scratching profusely, grooming to the point of hair loss on their rear ends, being more vocal, getting aggressive with each other, having random circular sores and scabs appear along both of their spines, weight gain, and vomiting. One of them also started peeing in front of the litter box instead of inside of it. Two of the times I found vomit, it was a saturated green color. Symptoms started back as early as November and lasted up until early March, which is multiple bags of food in that time. Then I changed their food to a different brand. Within a couple of weeks, ALL symptoms have either subsided or improved. I'd post a picture of the bright green vomit as well, but I don't want to risk my review getting flagged.

I was alarmed when I opened my new bag. It reminded me of Meow Mix so I thought there was a mistake. I went online and read about the formula and look change. I was nervous reading the reviews because many people complained that their pets were vomiting from it. I’m happy to report that my boys have been gobbling it up, without issue, for the last week.

I have one male cat that seems to have urinary problems because when I feed him regular cat food sometimes when he goes to pee he will meow loudly. At the vet, his urine has always been negative except one time he did have an infection, but that's a different story. When I feed him this, everything is OK with no more meowing when peeing. He seems to like it and is willing to eat it. I was relieved to see that the pellets are somewhat smaller now because I had bought one bag before where the pellets seemed huge and all my cats were reluctant to eat it (I put it outside and the trail cam showed that the raccoons and possums enjoyed it tremendously). Anyway, with this food, the cat who has the problem also seem to be throwing up significantly less hairballs than before. The other three cats, who do not have urinary issues, also are willing to eat it, although I give them regular cat food for the most part as they do not have a problem.

I thought my cats would love to have another type of hard food other than science diet due to my male cats urinary issues. They had been on science diet for quite a few years after being on the prescription science diet for urinary issues cat food. We luckily graduated to nonprescription science diet because we wanted him to stay on a brand that helped with urinary issues. There are very few brands that are made specially for cats with urinary issues. I was so excited to see that Purina now had a hard cat food for cats with urinary issues and it was a seafood flavor. I was so excited for my cats. The excitement died almost immediately when I noticed my cats were eating the bites of the science diet as I had started it by mixing the two. They were not eating hardly any of the purina. Over time, I noticed my cats were begging for treats a lot more and the Purina food in their bowls wasn’t touched. I decided I had given Purina a long enough chance and my cats felt the same way. I went to Chewy,, set up auto ship for my cats original science hard cat food and received it within just a few days. My cats love their hard food again and Chewy saved the day. Thanks Chewy and Science Diet.

My cats are choosing to eat this food over their previous food, Cat Chow Naturals. I chose this food because they are older and one is drinking more water and one is having more hairballs. So far, the hairballs have decreased. The fact that all 4 like it is great. The pieces are much larger than other food I've used, but even my smallest cat doesn't seem to mind. (Cat Chow on left) It does seem to slow down their eating, which is good for weight control and vomiting.

If it ain’t broken don’t fix it- BUT

Honestly I was so scared to feed my boy the new formula. I talked to my vet, we talked about the new ingredients and he reassured me it’s still going to be okay

Honestly I was so scared to feed my boy the new formula. I talked to my vet, we talked about the new ingredients and he reassured me it’s still going to be okay. GI & vomiting symptoms aren’t going to be the worst thing in the world, as most diet changes can be. So I took the risk. And honestly? He ate everything, did not leave any crunchies behind, and it seemed like after he had his meal for the first time he was suddenly happier? (I guess everyone is happier after they eat but he seems more calm and blissful than usual) No vomit or diarrhea either. Just a happy cat getting what he needs. If you still have the old formula, transition slowly if you’re worried.

Make the switch for a healthier, happier friend.

My family has a 10 year old ginger cat that has always had one problem after another. We found him in a ditch as a kitten when I was 10, in 2012. He became the family

My family has a 10 year old ginger cat that has always had one problem after another. We found him in a ditch as a kitten when I was 10, in 2012. He became the family cat much to his disappointment. (He has never really been in on the idea). We moved states a few times, and he’s always been sick. We tallied it up to stress from the move, but eventually, we started to think it might be something bigger. He was constantly throwing up, sometimes so often in a day that it was basically just stomach acid. When we moved to Colorado, he was 8 years old and losing weight badly. His skin was thinner, his pale orange fur was almost yellow. His eyes were sunken into his little face and we thought he might’ve picked up a parasite from one of us; after all, we had 2 people in our family working with animals, and a lot of them were shelter cats. It didn’t make any sense! He had spent nearly his whole life indoors, he was on Purina ProPlan Sensitive Skin & Stomach, he was getting vet visits every month but nobody could figure out what was going on. Then, he stopped eating. He had always been a skittish grouch, and frankly, we thought he might’ve just given up. We hated seeing him this way. At some point in 2020, I decided to switch his food. He was on the “best of the best”, excluding Royal Canine, so why not? He wasn’t eating it anyways. I picked up a 3.5lb bag of HSD Urinary and Hairball, and gave it a go. He snubbed it for a few hours, but polished off the whole bowl by that night. And the best part? He didn’t chuck it up. He went through the bag that week and we got him more, and eventually, he was eating normally again. It’s 2021, he is an old man now. He doesn’t at all act like it. He has color in his fur and his skin is thicker, and more elastic. His nails are healthy. His face and body has filled out, he is more friendly. He was never, ever friendly. He is a snuggle bug now. He “knocks” on doors to visit our family members and he purrs. I can’t say that before this year, I’ve ever heard him purr. He’s so much more active, too. He plays with all the toys we bought him as a kitten that he had never shown an interest in. He yells at us in the morning if we don’t feed him his soft food on the dot at 6am. He’s a different cat. It’s been a year and I firmly believe that switching his diet saved his life. We made the mistake of keeping him on a food that we were advised to use for years without independent research, and without considering that it could be the problem. Don’t do what we did. If you’re looking into reviews to find something that works, you’ve found it. We waited 8 years to help our friend and almost lost him; don’t wait another 10 seconds to help yours.

Kibble FAR too large

I really appreciate the low phosphorus content if this food for our old man cat. However, what cat is able to chew this? He likes the taste but it takes forever

I really appreciate the low phosphorus content if this food for our old man cat. However, what cat is able to chew this? He likes the taste but it takes forever for him to crunch it. He doesn't eat as much because of it. This is not good because he needs to put on weight due to hyperthyroidism. It looks like dog food. The only reason I chose this is the low phosphorus for our old cat who has not yet developed kidney disease, they need to reduce the kibble size before he breaks a tooth.
