Does Hill's Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach & Skin Grain-Free Salmon & Vegetable Entree Dog Food comes as DRY food?

Is the salmon farmed or wild? I’m concerned about mercury and excess contaminants.....

Answer by ChewyJun 04, 2018
Whenever wild-caught salmon is available, it is sourced for this diet. When not available, farm-raised Salmon from the Pacific Northwest is used to ensure the recipe is still available. Regardless of where salmon comes from, farm raised or ocean caught, it has to pass their rigid testing and meet their specific nutrient levels for our use. All salmon is processed in federally inspected facilities.

How long can your canned dog food be refrigerated after opened? How long can it be left out at room temperature?

Answer by ChewyDec 24, 2018
Your pet's bowl should be emptied of moist or canned food not eaten by your cat or dog within 4 hours if the ambient temperature is above 50°F. Opened cans should be stored in the fridge, at temperatures between 40-45°F, for a maximum of 5-7 days. Any cat or dog food remaining after that time should be thrown out.

Why add sugar to any dog food??

Answer by ChewyDec 24, 2018
Sugar in the food can mask the bitter taste of some other ingredients, can make the food more palatable and changes the texture of the food.

I like to mix up my 6-year-old Ruby's wet food while keeping the dry consistent. We avoid chicken flavors because it's a potential allergen, and she has broken out in the past with chicken entrees. I bought this because it is Salmon for sensitive skin and stomach. I did not realize until it was too late that it had so many chicken ingredients in it. After transitioning her for a week from a limited ingredient wet food to this one, her skin is inflamed and itchy, especially her vulva. It looks very uncomfortable and I feel awful for not reading all the ingredients. Chicken broth has never been a problem for her, but there's more than just chicken broth in this food.

We have a German Shepherd mix that came from a rescue. She vomited A LOT. I was told she had mega esophagus when we adopted her. So we went through years of the special feeding routine, numerous different foods.....soft, canned, soaked dry foods, different consistencies, you name it. The vomiting never went completely away. About 6 months ago I tried this food. I didn’t really want to because it is expensive and I thought “what could be so different about it from other canned food?” but, I was still trying to figure out the best food for her. I really couldn’t believe it. She no longer vomits AT ALL. I don’t even do the upright feeding, she eats from the floor like a normal dog. She has gained weight, she has more energy and I can just tell how much better she feels. Her skin used to have a slight redness in the creases and in her ears and that’s even gone. I thought, mmmm, maybe this is a fluke, so I tried going back to other canned food, Iams actually, not the super cheap stuff, and she started vomiting immediately. What the heck is in all that other dog food that makes her so sick??? I don’t know, but it makes me really wonder if most of the dog food out there is just garbage that’s not fit to give any living creature. I’m going to switch my other 2 dogs to the dry version just to see what happens. The only negative is she doesn’t really like it and will not eat it on its own. It does not look or smell like other canned dog food(you know, that strong smelling pate with globs of congealed goo). It probably tastes pretty bland since it’s lacking all those chemicals that make other dog food tasty but toxic. Just like people, we’d rather eat Doritos than some kale chips. I have to make a cooked chicken smoothie and mix it in with it and then she will enthusiastically gobble it up. Problem solved. Here’s a picture of a happy healthy dog thanks to this food. I’ve literally never written a review before for anything but I am so grateful for how this food has helped my sweet girl feel better I felt I needed to share my experience in the hope it will help others.

My mixed-breed Maltese, approx 8-year-old Mr. Bentley, has eaten the same food for many years (a grain-free salmon recipe after a vet's recommendation). Two years ago I added a morning treat of the same canned version and recently it has caused some stomach distress (loose stools, diarrhea). The dry food is still fine, but Mr. Bentley is so pleased when he gets a bit of wet/canned in the mornings. Two weeks ago, I added Hill's Science Diet Adult Sensitive Stomach, etc., and am amazed! He loves it, number one and he has had zero stomach issues. I took a chance because it's salmon and I am SO happy I did. As is Mr. Bentley.

My 16 yr old Beagle mix is my kid- I adopted her at shelter when she was only 6mo’s. I’ve been staying on top of health with 3x yearly lab panels since she was 8 or 9. Abt 6 months ago she stopped eating out of the blue. I’ve always joked when vets ask if she’s eating that they shouldn’t use that to gage a thing, as I’m sure she’d eat her self into an early grave if I let her. So when she stopped altogether I panicked and took her immediately to vet. Nothing was wrong according to labs. She ate off and on for next month or so, but never easily. I knew something was wrong so took her back and found creatinine had spiked to near fatal level. She was in ER on IV fluids for nearly 2 weeks. I read in a vet medical journal that if it’s kidney injury rather than kidney disease, which I still suspect was the case, the best bet is to keep on IV as long as possible until creatinine won’t lower more and it may bounce back to norm, or at least a pretty close new norm. ..IF it lowers. It did and against all odds we got it down to 4 or so at ER, then to 2 at vet with daily IV trips. But there was still danger of decline from malnourishment ..dogs w/ kidney failure aren’t exactly keen to eat, and we needed to keep protein low or she may relapse. I gave her appetite stimulant 1st weeks with a different Hills wet food (if your dog has kidney probs, avoid kibble as it can dehydrate). I worried protein was too high on that but had some Hill’s salmon sensitive stomach for another dog who often regurgitated after eating and noticed the content was lower. It not only helped that dog be sick far less often, but my 16 yr old began to eat this without appetite stimulant! I gave 1/2 can 2x daily (or as much as she’d eat,) some Alum Hydrox to keep phos lvls & BUN stable, and “kidney gold” from Pet wellbeing brand. Added organic chickenbroth baby food (no other ingredients) when she’d get bored of same food. ER vets felt she wouldn’t recover but she’s happy and healthy 6 months later! Salmon is so good for dogs, the omegas give several benefits from skin to organ to coat. And in case anyone reading has a dog with kidney troubles, the protein is also low enough for them and the salmon kind has no organ meats (better to avoid for kidney stuff) Highly recommend! Also: thanks to Chewy for making life easier with auto ship and for always being top notch with customer service. Appreciate y’all :)

WOW - REALLY works!

Our recent rescue pup is not only (finally) putting on weight with this (intended, not typical use for this food) product, but his coat! He’s a distemper survivor. Not only is it growing back in the patchy spots, his copper kennel stained paws (white fur), are almost completely faded. Nails too. See photos. His once coarse, lot of shed coat is soft, almost no shed. Honestly, the difference is almost unbelievable.

Hill's Science Diet canned dog food in part was instrumental in saving my dogs life. She developed pancreatitis which was found out after many different xrays, ultrasound, & the usual tests that go with it. Our veterinarian recommended this dog food to get her back on track to heal her. What a difference within 2 weeks she was back to normal. We highly recommend this food.

Larry was on prescription diet for a while but got the OK to switch to regular food again. He's very picky about food so we stuck to Hills since Larry loves it so far. It's great to have a salmon flavor food as a break from all the chicken on the market. Sensitive Stomach agrees with him.

Finally! The answer!!!

After many months of vet visits, tests & several different (dry & wet) foods, this canned food solved a major problem at our house! I have a 15mo Chi that suddenly didn't want the dry Science Diet anymore. Okay, I get it; maybe she just wanted something new. Or maybe she has an allergy. Or is she just being a picky bish? After trying all the recommended brands & flavors, nothing helped. She turned her nose up at Purina Pro Plan, other Science Diet flavors, Royal Canin, cat food (vet recommended; didn't work) & several others. Then she settled on wet Cesar loaves & filets. Then she didn't want the loaves. Then she didn't want the filets. We then went to Beneful wet & she loved the chicken the most. So after I load up on that particular one, she decided to stop eating again. Food toppers, seasonings, condiments, mixed in cooked meats. Just literally me pulling my hair out. So go back to 8 days ago. I decided to try this wet food & we chose the salmon flavor. She absolutely loves it & it's stinky. She gets 1/4 of a can twice a day & her eyes are brighter & she has more energy. Give it a shot. Maybe it'll work for you, too. Good luck!

My 8 month old puppy has had a problem with vomiting ever since I brought him home. I was giving him Hill’s Prescription Diet i/d but that even caused his little tummy problems. I switched to this canned food and he hasn't vomited once and it's been about a month or so. (The photo is the canned food mixed with Hill’s Healthy Advantage Puppy)
