Questions & Answers

I have a small cat, about 6 pounds. I was feeding her the Hill’s Science kitten food but she is now over a year old. I am looking for an adult kibble but with small pieces for her small mouth, similar to the size of the kitten kibble. Is this a good option, or can you suggest another product?

Why do you say "corn gluten meal" is safe for cats but other sites says it unhealthy and cats can not digest it well?

Answer by ChewyJul 17, 2020
Corn gluten meal is created by removing starch, bran and germ from the corn kernel to create a protein-rich ingredient. As a high-quality source of protein, it helps strengthen and maintain your pet’s muscles.

I've been feeding my cat Hill's Science Diet dry food since his gotcha day (he started on kitten kibble, also from Chewy), and over five years later, this is the result. While he was never a fan of their wet food (pate isn't his thing), he loves his Hill's Science Diet dry kibble. As you can see, it helps keep him healthy and at an ideal weight and physique. As a high-quality kibble that he likes, and so does my wallet, I am also happy with Hill's Science Diet. Finally, his healthy diet has contributed to his having very few health issues thus far and being strong enough to climb up to capture high-flying bugs (extra protein) to snack on.

I have been feeding my cat this food for about six months now. She is strictly an indoor cat and was a little on the chubby side. I believe this lower calorie food did help her to lose a few pounds and is better for her lifestyle. The pieces of kibble are a little large so I wouldn’t recommend it for those transitioning from kitten to cat food, but we haven’t had an issue with it. I also imagine the larger size does require them to actually chew the food (rather than just scarfing it down) which likely helps keep tartar buildup down. My cat’s coat is very soft, she has bright eyes, and is playful with lots of energy and I think this food contributes to that. As with anything, there are conflicting reviews on what is best to feed your pet, but I trust the hills science diet brand as it is overall well reviewed in the pet parent community as well as by the veterinary community.

We have been buying this kibble for 3 years. In the past 3 years the kibble size has shrunk tremendously. They are typically a rouder triangular shape. The shape has changed over time and most recently it is now shrunk down to a thinner triangle with visible holes. The price is still the same, yet the amount of kibble has drastically changed. This is unacceptable. I will be switching to a different brand that does not put the cost of cutting corners on the production quality of the product on the consumer.

I've fed Maverick Science Diet since I got him as a kitten. He's kind of a big boy and I have never had an issue when using this formula. He was on UD for a short period of time but we were able to transition off that. A few months ago, I tried to feed him Taste of the Wild (which I feed the dogs and they love!). My cat when on a HUNGER STRIKE! Mav would ask for food with a full bowl, I thought he was just being troublesome and needed more time. Not true! The day I brought his science diet food back home, Maverick ate immediately! And he was so happy to have his favorite back! This product is great, Mav loves it and I love knowing he is eating a quality product!

I love everything I get from Chewy but I am about to stop being a customer if my deliveries don’t get better. Fed Ex is terrible. I wish you would change who delivers your product. Today, they left my package down at the main road by our mailbox first time this has ever happen. Usually, I catch the delivery person tossing my packages either on my porch or in my garage. They have no respect for our packages. I know my review won’t mean much to you.

So when I switched my cat from the kitten formula to the adult formula the size comparison was astronomical. He had a horrible time learning to chew up the huge pieces. He would sometimes give up and swallow them whole. Which of course would make him sick. I just opened the second bag of the adult formula and the size has thankfully been cut almost in half! I really wish this had been his first transition. We will see if this is, in fact, easier for him to chew up. You can see one piece of the kitten food, one piece from the first bag of adult that he had to transition to and then one piece from this new bag which is the Goldilocks piece.

I was trying to introduce this food to my two kittens, who are about to be a year old, just to see how they do with "big boy" food, as i call it. Since there are no sample adult food items for cats, i had to purchase this big bag. I just wish i could have a sample, so that i know whether they would eat it before paying so much for it and they were having a hard time eating it. The pieces are way to big for kittens to transition into adult cat food. My cats will be a year in August and i am thinking that i will need to keep purchasing kitten food, since it seems all the adult food pieces are big. Or may need to try a different brand of cat food, although my cats have only know Hills Science Diet since i adopted them at 3 months old. Another thing is that i cannot donate the food that they did not eat, since shelters do not take open bags of food. I just did not want to have my money wasted.

Sticking With Science Diet

I have for some reason been graced with two unfussy, easy cats. The shelter sent me home with two small bags of HSD Optimal Care, and I bought a big bag of that to keep up their usual diet. I accidentally bought this recently because the description is just similar enough for me to goof up my order. The kibble for Indoor 1-6 is much bigger, but they're eating it without complaint! I am new at having cats - the bigger size reassures me that their teeth are getting attention. The flavor is the same, so I don't see a reason to go back to the tiny pellets. I have noticed that the two big bags smelled a little unpleasant compared to the little bags given to me by the vet. I wonder if cat food just absorbs smells from whatever it's stored by, but it made me uneasy. Kitties had no qualms about the change.

Reformulated without Warning - & The New Formula Stinks

I've had my cat on this food since we adopted him in October '24 as it was what the shelter was feeding him. The bag we got in April (just opened it) is a new formula

I've had my cat on this food since we adopted him in October '24 as it was what the shelter was feeding him. The bag we got in April (just opened it) is a new formula. There was no warning about this, so we couldn't gradually transition him as we had none of the old stuff left. The new formula has significantly smaller kibbles, which he eats a lot faster. It also has a different smell and color (though the smell isn't terrible, just different). Lastly, his poops are less solid on this diet. They're also smellier, which is an issue considering we're in a 2bd apartment. Unfortunately I'll be changing his diet due to the new formula.
