After my dog had been on this food for years without any issues recently he had a major reaction and got very sick. Little did I know they changed the ingredients in this food without notifying us. Now after multiple vet visits totaling over $1000 and blood panels to assess what was wrong, turns out the food caused it. Also after reading the countless reviews from others over the past 6 months on here all saying the same thing. Im very disappointed and considering taking action against hills because of this.

Vets love to prescribe these types of pet foods. We have a mastiff with a very sensitive stomach. The vet prescribed this in the past, and our dog was so sick we gave in and bought a bag. The cost was not sustainable for such a large breed. We finally found a more affordable, non prescription food and he was fine for months. Then he got sick again. The vets immediately said to put him back on it. He was losing weight (he's very trim to begin with) so we broke down and got another bag. Three days on this food, he was sick again. the recipe has changed too. I can't believe the price for food that is basically just a bunch of food waste -- cellulose, corn starch, hydrolyzed chicken livers, ground pecan shells. Really?! $145 a bag! Lastly, on this garbage, our doggie starts smelling bad, his ears get full of wax, his beautiful healthy coat gets dried out and feels gross. This is like big Pharma for dogs. I don't buy it.

When I first started ordering this a few years ago it had no beet pulp...my dog is big time allergic to it..I had my dogs blood diagnosed to find out what was making him have severe skin problems.. in the test it showed on a scale from 1-500 what would make him sick or allergic.. 500 being the worst case...the beet pulp came in around 490....he didn't have much of a problem for a couple of years then I got to noticing a big change...like several trips to the emergency room...some at night that equals after hours fee's...an extra 300.00 on top of the treatment...all kinds of new meds and extra cost...Well...guess what these Hill's folks decided to do..that's right they added beet pulp.. Hill's didn't try and inform folks that are buying this over priced stuff or even the vets warn us about the change in the ingredients? that'll be a NO!...its all about the money...I wont buy another spoon full of this....was Killin my dog...

The perfect answer for our allergy girl!

We learned the hard way when our girl was just a few months old that she was allergic to almost all meat, major rashes, hair loss, and trips to the emergency vet for scary allergic reactions. Then we switched vets to get some help and someone to actually listen. He put her on ZD immediately, and within days, her little body started recovering! She is now beyond healthy and happy, with no food-related issues. If you think it's the food, keep pushing, find a vet who will listen; it changes everything!

My dog was on the hydrolyzed soy formula for about 4-6 months which was wonderful for his constant digestive issues he was having. However, for some reason, he refused to eat. I also tried adding the hydrolyzed chicken pate and he still refused. I then switched to the Hydrolyzed Chicken formula and he is still eating it. The smell is much better and kibble size is small but larger than the Soy. His bowel movements are firm and regular and he’s doing very well!

My dog has been on this prescription food for years due to protein allergies to beef, chicken, wheat, etc. Recently I’ve noticed that he has a bad hot spot on his groin and allergy symptoms are back. I can’t verify that it is the food but the formula did change and I was disappointed to see the main ingredients are now corn starch, chicken, and pecan shells (??). We will be researching alternatives in hope that his skin irritation subsides. Food has always been an issue with my dog, him not wanting to eat some days and then having poor digestion. I’ve hated feeding this to him but felt it was our only option. I will be trying Stella & Chewys here soon as it seems to be a fit for some dogs who are prone to allergies.

New formula brought back issues

I have fed Hill’s Prescription Diet z/d to my dog for years due to severe food allergies and chronic skin issues. It was one of the only diets that consistently kept him comfortable and stable. Since the recent formula update, his symptoms have noticeably worsened. I have observed a significant increase in skin flare-ups, itching, ear infections, hair loss, and overall sensitivity. My dog has a long medical history of allergies and immune-related skin conditions, so even small ingredient adjustments can have major consequences. For healthy dogs, minor formulation changes may not matter but for dogs with compromised immune systems, consistency is critical. Prescription diets are not simply “food” they are part of ongoing medical management. Because this diet is designed specifically for highly sensitive dogs, formula changes especially involving added fibers or digestive blends can have unintended consequences for pets who rely on ingredient stability. I strongly encourage clearer and more proactive communication when updates are made to therapeutic diets. Many of us depend on consistency for our pets’ health and quality of life. Very disappointed

Helps With Possible Food Allergies

Our dog was suffering from some occasional loose stools and rashes in her ears and stomach area. Our vet recommended changing her food to the Hills Prescription kibble. We weaned her off her current food and, since the introduction of the prescription kibble, she hasn't had any loose stools and her rashes have not reappeared. We are very pleased with her progress.
