About Hill's Prescription Diet Foods for Skin / Food Sensitivities

Improving Lives Together

Groundbreaking Nutrition for Sensitive Dogs

Dogs with skin and coat conditions or food sensitivities can benefit from Hill's Prescription Diet z/d and d/d foods. Prescription Diet d/d has limited ingredient nutrition and a single intact animal protein. The Prescription Diet z/d food features a highly hydrolyzed protein and a single carbohydrate source to minimize the risk of allergic reactions. Many pet parents discover that simply eating the right food helps eliminate food-related causes of skin irritation and helps avoid reactions to food.

Questions & Answers

24 Customer Questions

Why did you change the formula and why were you not transparent about it? My dog will not eat now and we are really struggling. We have been loyal to this food for five years and are so frustrated.

Answer by GiGiAug 15, 2025
I am sorry to hear about this . For your baby I had the same problem also . Go to an animal hospital and they have the original there. Hope this helps .

Same question as the previous poster about the change of formula. My dog is on a hunger strike until you bring the old one back.

Answer by EllenJan 13, 2026
I was able to get some of the original formula from Hill's and treated the new formula as though it were a new food, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, four days at each stage. That way Rosy became acclimated to the new formula, and she is doing fine with it and loves it just like the original. It is still chicken liver, just with nuts and fruit pulps for their antioxidant properties.

Did the formula change on this item? I have a can of z/d that is blue and listed as original flavor and not the one shown here with orange Hydrolyzed Chicken Flavor.

My dog weighs approx 9lbs she should be around 7lbs, how much do I feed her each meal as she gets breakfast and dinner?

Answer by AutumnwingsJan 18, 2026
The feeding amounts listed on dog food labels, regardless of brand, are the total amount for the entire day, not per meal. If you feed your dog twice a day, you simply split that daily amount in half and give half at each feeding. This article from Taste of the Wild explains portioning clearly and may be helpful. (You may need to Google "Taste of the Wild What's a conscientious pet owner to do" if the link doesn't show.) Dogs should be fed based on their ideal or healthy weight, not their current weight. Many pets become overweight for several reasons, and overfeeding is one of the most common. According to Hill’s Science Diet feeding chart: A 5 lb dog should receive about 5/8 of a can per day A 10 lb dog should receive 1 can per day Since your dog’s ideal weight is around 7 lbs, a good starting point would be no more than 3/4 of a can per day. Split into two meals, that comes out to roughly 2/3 cup (about 5 oz) of wet food per meal.

As many others, I’m stunned by the sudden recipe change. My dog has IBD and is a very picky eater. Hill’s z/d cans and kibble were the only foods she liked eat and didn’t trigger flare-ups. The new recipe looks, smells (and I bet tastes) completely different, and my pup now refuses to eat it. I understand that the manufacturer may need or want to review recipes periodically, but why change something that was already working? They know that so many dogs with preexisting conditions rely on this formula and have very limited alternatives available on the market. For example, my pup can’t stand soy or fish hydrolyzed protein recipes, and non-hydrolyzed options cause flare-ups. I encourage everyone facing the same issue to submit official complaints through Hill’s website: https://www.hillspet.com/contact-us. Hopefully, with enough consumer pressure, they will consider bringing the original recipe back.

This can, with the orange label on the bottom of the can and the purple circle on the label, is a formula change! Without notice! They have added some biome and antioxidants. Much to my surprise when I received my case of what I was expecting to be the original, with the blue label on the bottom, I opened the first can and the color was MUCH darker than normal, the texture was grainy, and the smell was off. Needless to say I opened 3 more cans and they were all the same. I reached out to Hills directly and they told me about the additives, and suggested that I follow the guidelines for feed change. Little late for that now since I didn’t have any of the “good” one. I put the unused portion in the fridge, like I always do, and the next day the smell was even worse. This food, that is by prescription only, is to expensive to have to throw more that half away every day! Hills said that vets had been notified, yet my vet of 20 years knew nothing about it. So now-what? Formula changes without notice is not only unfair to the pet parent, but to the animal as well. The animals are on this specific diet for a medical reason, and any change in diet is unacceptable on behalf of the manufacturer is unacceptable.

We give a ZERO rating. I have been buying Hills prescription products for many years for my dogs. Now I am beyond incensed at their reformulation of z/d wet food for dogs. When I opened the can it was a different color (gray), had large black chunks, and smelled rancid. Immediately threw the whole case out and called Chewy. They reimbursed me and let me know that this is the result of a formula change by Hills. The ingredients now include, among other changes, fish oil and ground pecan shells and the food has more water content. Why does Hills think this change is a good thing? I can only assume that it is cheaper for them to produce. I have been reading dozens of negative comments by Chewy customers regarding this. Incredible! Am cancelling my auto-ship and returning my orders. It is only by calling out and pressuring the manufacturers that something will be done about this. We returned 11 cases of this product.

Chewy failed to communicate the formulation change. They updated the website so they were well aware of ingredient change. This is serious for homes with LIFE Threatening food allergies. If a dog would have consumed the new formulation which includes GROUND PECAN SHELLS and the pet happened to lick a child/adult who has nut allergies it could trigger an allergic reaction and could even be life threatening. There are so many issues with this change and failure to communicate to customers who are the ones that support chewy by giving them repeated business. Great pet food until recent change. Maybe hills could consider excluding nuts from future reformulations.

We used to love this wet food. My dog loved the taste and it was especially good for her skin issues. I order this food a lot. This morning when I opened up the cans (mind you I bought 12 of them), the color and smell was so off. I thought the cans were all bad. I opened up every single one and they all were the same disgusting color and smell. I came to later find out that they changed the recipe. I had to throw away every single can, and now I have no wet food to mix into my dogs food. Very, very upset and disappointed.

They changed their formula in April to include “ActivBiome + Digestion” and now has a logo next to the Digestive Care label. This is a NEW formulation that my vet did not know about and made both of my dogs sick and I spent over $400 on a vet visit to test for pancreatitis. Thankfully it was inflammation, but this is an awful time to have been given this new shipment. We had to go to pet stores around our area to find the old food, since this new one is making our dogs vomit and have diarrhea.

We got a chewy deliver and I opened the new cases and immediately got on a chat w a Chewy rep to share my concern that the cases of Hill’s ZD was bad. Come to find out the formula has been changed by Hill’s / no notice nothing. Zip. For those of us that are basically keeping our pets on this formula because of dire medical conditions this is simply unacceptable. I have reached out to Hill’s too. Chewy offered me a replacement or credit, as always the customer service at Chewy’s is superior and that’s a huge thing in this day and age.

DANGER!!!! DO NOT feed your dog the new recipe (with the new logo in the photo)

If it has the Activebiome+ logo as seen in the photo (purple), do NOT feed this to your dog. It's some new recipe that's given Ace (and hundreds of other dogs)

If it has the Activebiome+ logo as seen in the photo (purple), do NOT feed this to your dog. It's some new recipe that's given Ace (and hundreds of other dogs) stomach issues. It's currently rated 1.7 stars on Hills website. Chewy should pull this immediately if they care about dogs! The rep on the phone just now told me she's had several calls today about dogs with stomach issues and other illnesses from it. How is this still being sold?!?

This was the second box of 12 I ordered. The color and smell when I opened the first can was as bad as the first ones. The photo makes it look better than it is. This food is normally a light tan pate that smells like dogfoot. The lot is the same so I expected no difference. My dog will not eat this. Surely, you can request a recall from Science Diet! You have bad dogfood! I am done! I won't be ordering anymore from you.

The original flavor formula was the best. My dog has GI issues and allergies. A combination of dry and canned food finally helped to control both. When I received the new packaging “chicken flavor” I called to make sure it was the same. I was told that the only difference was packaging. I opened it and it was darker than usual. I compared the ingredients and they are not the same. Ok, I thought I would give it a try. My dog’s poop turned completely black, and he got really constipated. I got scared thinking it was GI bleed but after going back to the original formula ( I had a few left) he was back to normal. One of the ingredients listed was crushed pecan shells. Why would I give my dog pecan shells? Tried to switch to a different brand, but it does not agree with my dog. I was running around local stores buying leftovers of original formula (whatever was not sold out and whatever they had in stock) We are good for a couple of months but I have no idea what I am going to do when we run out. I wish they would not change the original formula. And no it is not the same. I would give 5 stars to the original formula but not the current version.
