About Hill's Prescription Diet Foods for Skin / Food Sensitivities

Improving Lives Together

Groundbreaking Nutrition for Sensitive Dogs

Dogs with skin and coat conditions or food sensitivities can benefit from Hill's Prescription Diet z/d and d/d foods. Prescription Diet d/d has limited ingredient nutrition and a single intact animal protein. The Prescription Diet z/d food features a highly hydrolyzed protein and a single carbohydrate source to minimize the risk of allergic reactions. Many pet parents discover that simply eating the right food helps eliminate food-related causes of skin irritation and helps avoid reactions to food.

For many years we had thought our Wire Fox Terrier had digestive issues or possibly pancreatitis. For 4 years she had eaten Purina's HA diet for her allergies and it’s lack of fat content. She has suffered with her allergies for 3 years now, every year getting worse. Swollen feet, runny eyes, and coat issues. Finally taking a chance on seeing if the fat content in D/D might be an issue we tried it. Well not going to lie in taste she was in heaven and as we gradually introduced it in with her other diet she consciously made the decision not to eat the HA. Approx. 3weeks went by her coat is excellent, her anxiety much less, and her feet less irritated. I guess you could say D/D was heavenly sent for our pup and us.

My dog is on the older side (16) and have couple of medical issues including allergies and skin problems. The D/D is great for him. Sometimes when I used to buy him medical food he wouldn't eat it - eat small portions. I wouldn't know what to do since you're not allowed to give him anything else but his medical food. I kept changing it until I found the D/D. He loves the D/D and eats it well! It's great for his fur as well. Other kinds of medical food would cause him to vomit or diarrhea - not the D/D! Other than that, Chewy's service is the best. Always prompt answers, flexible and helpful!

My French Bulldog has had many stomach issues and needed to be on a food sensitivities diet. We went through so many different foods, he did not like the taste and wasn't eating which was unusual for him. Salmon was the last flavor we tried and bingo!, he loves it. It's such a relief to get him to eat again without being hand-fed or waiting until he was starving. We still mix in some d/d wet food with the dry but hope to be able to cut back on that too. So happy to have found this food.

This food is a miracle worker. After nearly 6 months of trying to figure out what wouldn't upset my cavalier puppy's stomach, this food did it. Most dog foods (even those designed for dogs with sensitive stomachs) contains some kind of rice and chicken. After exhausting our options with conventional foods, specialty foods, and a home cooked meal, we came to this food. Within 25 hours, our dog's stool was perfect (something we had NEVER seen with him), his gas decreased, he stopped itching his ears and face, and he was calmer and happier. I am not sure if he was allergic to chicken or to rice, but I'm not about to find out because we are never going off this food. His coat is exquisite and shiny, his weight is perfect, and strangers often comment on what a stunning dog he is. It was one of the quickest turn arounds I have ever seen in a dog. What makes the difference in this food is the novel protein and carbohydrate choices. Hills SD ensures that there is no cross contamination between their different foods. An 8 lb bag lasts our 17 pound dog a little over a month, and the price is reasonable.

Since starting Hill’s Prescription Diet, she’s been eating well, maintaining her balance, and overall seems happier and healthier. My dog has suffered from recurring ear infections since he was a puppy. He also often had loose-ish stools. On the recommendation of my vet, I switched him to this food. He's been on this food for about a month, and his ears have never looked better. They're no longer bright pink, and I've only had to clean them once or twice since switching him (it used to be almost every day). His stools also look much better. He's also super picky, and while he's not completely obsessed with this food, it's the only kibble I've ever given him that he hasn't refused to eat. Definitely worth the price to have a dog who finally likes his food and doesn't need to go to the vet every couple of months for recurring ear infections.

This food is keeping my dog alive and well!

I heard a rumor that Hill's might be discontinuing the Potato/Salmon flavor of their d/d food. I really hope that isn't true - my almost-12-year-old dog with a heart

I heard a rumor that Hill's might be discontinuing the Potato/Salmon flavor of their d/d food. I really hope that isn't true - my almost-12-year-old dog with a heart condition has been thriving on this food since his "heart failure" diagnosis a year and a half ago. We get the canned and the dry versions. He LOVES it and I'm convinced it's helping to save/prolong his life (in conjunction with his medications of course). I hope this flavor continues to be available - I know they make other flavors, but this one is the best for my doggie. Thank you Chewy!

Very high quality food!

I had to switch my dogs food from Iams Response KO due to Mars buying out Iams and discontinuing the food. I have two large dogs, both with food and skin allergies. My Vet Allergist recommended this food as a replacement for the Iams brand. While it is a little pricey, the dogs love it, and their skin and ears are looking fantastic! Another surprising positive effect, is they have been having less frequent and smaller poops! I guess better food equals less waste too. I think if you are looking for a high quality food for your dog with sensitive skin and stomach, this may be an excellent choice for your pet!

This was prescribed for my dog about nine years ago when he was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Since starting on this food, he rarely has a flareup and when he does, it's generally due to other things (like a medication that upsets his stomach). I only give this four stars because if my boy could tolerate it, I'd give him something more appealing, but he likes it and it keeps his stomach from being upset, so that's the most important things.
