Do you mix Milk thistle with water

Answer by ChewyAug 21, 2019
Milk Thistle can be put on top or mixed in with food. If your pet refuses it at first, it's recommended to start with a very small amount and gradually build up to the full dosage so they become accustomed to the taste. It can also be mixed into a favorite treat.

A Blessing to My Dog

Two years ago my female Dobe's ALT was 1600 (norm is 10-100# and her ALP was 2500 #norm is 23-212). She should have been dead. I did tons of research and found Herbsmith's Milk Thistle. I talked to their founder, a vet, and she instructed me on dosage and what/when to expect a change. Within one month, both enzymes were down 1000 each, and in another month, she was almost completely normal. Spoke to Herbsmith again, and was told I could keep her on a lower dosage for life. I have done so, and two years later her blood results continue to remain in the normal zone. Yes, I do highly recommend this product and the company that makes it.

Powder better than capsule

Our 2 Siamese were diagnosed with elevated liver enzymes. My Vet recommended Denamarin Liver supplement if they would eat it. The circular capsule was not successful. I could not get them to eat it. It must be given in an empty stomach or 2hrs after food. I even tried putting the capsule on my finger with a little of their canned food. They spit it out. So, after searching on Chewy, I came across Herbsmith Milk Thistle powder that is added to their food. Our cats are on wet canned food. I started with a transition phase of 1/2 a scoop (1/8tsp) 2x/day. Scoop is included in container. After about a week, they get the full scoop (1/4 tsp) 2x/day per instructions. My picky boy Siamese eats his food with the Milk Thistle powder with no problems. I have been using this supplement for 2 weeks. My 15yr old will have another senior exam/blood work in 6mo. Hopefully we will see improvement with the liver results.

I Believe in it.

Our Great Pyrenees was diagnosed with liver disease in Jan 2017, given 6 months tops to live. He dropped from 115 to 78 pounds, would not touch the hepatic food. I started cooking his meals and added this to his supper each night. Well, his weight went back up to 92 pounds and we lost him Dec. 5, 2018, at age 11 1/2. Had him just a month shy of 2 years after the prognosis was 6 months. I can't swear this milk thistle did it, but my vet has no explanation why he lived so long. Our adopted 9 1/2 year old Great Pyrenees arrives Sunday and I am ordering this for her.

My dog ate the milk thistle powder fine mixed with her food. We started the first 2 months with only half the dosage to make sure she had no side effects. It helped bring her liver enzyme levels down a little, so I increased her dosage to the full amount. The full amount made her lethargic. When I went back to half dosage, she was back to normal. We will see how her enzymes are doing in her next set of blood tests.

If your dog has elevated liver enzymes, give this a try. It takes a while to repair any damage, but it DOES work. My dog has been on this for almost a year due to a recalled food she was on that made her very sick and almost died from liver damage. I have her on a daily tiny amount (she is 80 lbs) as a maintainance and her elev alk phos levels have returned to normal. The company isn't very good with answering emails I found out, but they do answer their phones if you call with any questions. My girl is 11 yrs old and in great health once again thanks to Herbsmith MT formula. I read some say it gave their dog the diarrhea, and when it happened with my girl, I backed off a week, than restarted at less than the recommended daily dose and no more loose stools. It really can be a lifesaver for dogs!

I bought this for my Yorkie who had surgery for her liver shunt a year ago. Her bile acids are still a little high so I thought I’d add this to her diet. I started with a very small amount and worked up to the full amount. She has a sensitive stomach and never once did her bowel movements change. Added bonus that she loves the way it tastes. I won’t know for sure until her next bile acid text if it’s actually working but I do like that she tolerated it well!

it worked

So my cat had elevated liver levels for the past year and I tried denamarin but she refused to take it in any form neither pill or treat so I had to find something

So my cat had elevated liver levels for the past year and I tried denamarin but she refused to take it in any form neither pill or treat so I had to find something she agrees to take and thought to try this , I was skeptical because it doesn’t contain the SamE part which is the one that help renovating the liver while milk thistle is just antioxidant but thank God I sprinkle it in her dry food and she eats it all. probably that’s why my cat refused denamarin because Same is bitter. Today we went to the vet and tested her and her levels became normal again she is 123 u/L which is within normal ( below 130) and she was 181 three months ago. The vet also switched her dry food to prescription kidney care hill science and I also added omega 3 to her wet food . So something of all these made this great change and I will keep her on this system to prevent any elevated level in the future. I can’t believe this worked in just couple of months . I highly recommend it and recommend the entire diet and omega 3 . Every healthy change helps.

Good, but just a note...refrigerate.

I ordered this in September 2017 and am reviewing in January 2018. The scoop is teeny and I'm dosing a senior Cocker Spaniel. So I'm down to about half a jar. My girl started getting snoopy with her food and I tried eliminating all the nutrient / vitamin additives - one at a time - to see what was offending her...and in the process, I gave this a good sniff...and frankly, it smells rancid. Not rotten, but really strong...like there are oils in the powder and they've gotten strong? Regardless, that makes me sad. I kept the container in a kitchen cabinet the entire time...and the house averages 70 F year-'round. I wish I would've kept it in the fridge. So to others considering purchasing - I like it. I really do believe it helps. (I take a milk thistle supplement myself!) With this and some other supplements, my girl came back from a Cushing's diagnosis to "therapeutic" cortisol levels (woo-hoo! no meds!). BUT...put it in the fridge. Maybe that will prevent you from arriving at the same bad-smell conclusion I've come to. Blessings!

Works great!

I got my first jar of this elsewhere due to a certificate I had on file and just purchased my second from Chewy this week prior to getting my dog's blood tested

I got my first jar of this elsewhere due to a certificate I had on file and just purchased my second from Chewy this week prior to getting my dog's blood tested. I decided to try this after another product did not work well at bringing her liver values down even though she was on it for a few months. I had no clue if she would like it on top of her food or if it would work, but since I definitely needed to purchase something else, I figured it was worth a shot. This product has worked very well. The difference in her liver values from February to now is pretty extreme. While hers were not as high as some dogs have been, I wanted to make sure they were controlled before they got out of hand. I will definitely be recommending this product to anyone whose dog needs a liver supplement. I can now rest easier knowing her liver is functioning normally.
