Formula change mid-2023? NOT a dust issue that’s fine - but does NOT cover urine smell after a few days!?!? Was the perfect unscented clumping litter for 10 days — until a month ago!? Did my cat change, or??

Answer by SusanJul 28, 2023
Just a suggestion, don’t wait 10 days (or really “a few”) to scoop Kitty’s pee…once a day and Urine smell is gone

Not dust free! I bought 2 boxes in December and this is the worst litter ever! Had to throw most of it out! I have used Fresh Step for years! What is going on here?

This is not fragrance free. What is the strong smell?

Answer by ChewyJan 30, 2020
This Simply Unscented eliminates odors without added fragrance. It contains activated charcoal and plant extracts.

How often should this litter be changed?

Answer by ChewyAug 29, 2018
How frequently the litter needs changing will vary and depend on how many cats are using it, how frequently it is scooped and how much the cats go to the bathroom.

Chemical scent, NOT unscented

Some lots of this litter are far more scented than others. Recent orders have been very strongly scented, and this ends up smelling like a strong chemical smell that migrates from my cat's paws to his scalp. Every time I nuzzle my cat, I'm greeted by that terrible chemical smell that becomes more and more dense as he uses it over time. I've tried cleaning his scalp with a warm soapy washrag to manage it, but there's little change. If I had to guess, I would wager that the reason some lots smell more than others is because Fresh Step is integrating leftover fractions of other scented litter in their production process to manage waste and costs--ie. 1-5% 'standard" litter folded into the rest. Here is the lot number of the most recent offending lot in my photo.

This litter had a strong perfume odor. I had to recheck the package. It did say unscented, but it is definitely not unscented. I have a sensitivity to perfumes and so do some of my cats so I try to buy unscented litter. I love the packaging, and the price wasn't too bad, but something was wrong with these two boxes of litter I received. They all have a perfume smell. Not quite sure how that happened.

I've been using Fresh Step unscented clumping cat litter for years - it works very well for me. One technique that makes it work best is to rapidly shake the litter box up and down (like a vibration) while tipping the litter to one end. The clumps float to the surface and are then easily scooped away. About 3-4 vibrating tips back and forth get 99% of the clumps out without breaking them. This works much better than digging for them and making a mess by breaking up the clumps. The litter lasts much longer because it can be cleaned to like new each time. After the last tip, I do scoop through the litter to take out anything that was missed before I level it in the litter box. Seems weird sharing this but maybe it will help someone? Also a big shout out to Chewy for their awesome customer service. I sent in some manufactures coupons that had not been credited. I contacted them by email and the issue was resolved within an hour or so. Thank you to them!!! I will always shop Chewy first for my pet needs - great people!

Around mid-2025, the packaging changed and the litter started smelling very perfume-y. Price also went down a bit around the same time. I'm not sure why that correlates but I feel like it does. As a disabled person with frequent carpal AND cubital tunnel flares, as well as hip issues, and a bunch of rescues.......paying this little for 40lbs AND there being multiple little bags of it instead of one giant one is literally invaluable. Idk what I would do without this, because it's so obscenely expensive to buy cat litter now compared to a few years ago, and it's always cheaper to get it in bulk but it's so heavy!! The giant 40lb bags actually make my joints worse. So to be able to rip open the palette and just tear into 1 small bag at a time is, again, invaluable. ...But I'd be willing to go back to paying the ~$22 per pack of 42lbs over the ~$19 that I am now if it went back to being unscented and clumping better. Like another review said, it's very muddy now and we have some intense puddle pee-ers who don't go often throughout the day, 3 of our 9, so then there just winds up being a giant SLAB of litter you have to excavate even if you scoop daily... and if you try to break it up it will coat the scoop. We have 3 automatic boxes which helps, because this works great with them. But that still doesn't change that it now smells like detergent. I will say, out of many clay litters I've tried, it's less dusty than most. Even now. But there's still a cloud of it. I wish the other brands of 4-packs like this were cheaper so that I could test if they're truly unscented!

This my first time buying from Chewy and they are fast in shipping the items however I am really disappointed for I have used other vendors for many years but decided to check out Chewy to see if this is a better option for me to get my cat items on monthly auto ship basis but It seems this litter was replaced with Tidy Cat’s litter, is not the same litter as Fresh Step! Well I will upload the original Fresh Step Litter later so you can see the difference.

I have used this litter for over 5 year since my cat was a kitten and up until recently it was great. I noticed the packaging changed, but the formula must've also changed recently because it is very, very dusty now. When I poured it into my cat's litter box for the first time, I was alarmed about the cloud of dust and overwhelming scent that was not there before. However since I had already purchased it, I was planning to use it until my next order. As many cat parents know they are very particular, and my cat made it known he did not like the formula change either. He was refusing to use the litter box and was having accidents outside his box. As a result, we had to switch to another, less dusty option (Arm & Hammer Litter Cloud Control). It is disappointing as the litter was previously a fine unscented/low dust option. I typically do not leave reviews, but I felt this warranted one in hopes of warning others before they purchase.

Been using Fresh Step unscented for nearly 7 years. Latest purchase came as a surprise when I poured it into the litter box. It is not remotely comparable to the usual formula. Instead of the flecks of minerals and carbon, it now appears to be all carbon - solid grey. That would be OK but the granules are so small now - they are barely larger than dust which of course will more difficult to come out from between cats toes. Worse thing of course is that my cats are reluctant to use it. If it was possible to send it back, I would. If manufacturers change formulas , they should make it clear in the description. They havent even bothered to change the photo of the litter on Chewys description page.

I thought I finally found an unscented clumping litter we liked with low dust for my 10 month old kitty with immune issues. She’s my first cat and it’s been quite the struggle finding suitable litter that also doesn’t track much. I thought Fresh Step Simply Unscented was the one I was going to stick with, until the recent shipments changed completely. The box looks different (blue to green) but the litter has also changed a lot. It is now a darker gray color, the granules are a different shape and consistency than before, and upon the first pour I noticed it is FRAGRANCED. It almost has a Febreze scent - not truly unscented. I’m disappointed. Back to the drawing board.

I bought this because a friend gave me some that she had after her cat passed away, and I liked that it clumped so well. However, in spite of stating on the packaging that it is unscented, it is most certainly not unscented. It has a sickly sweet perfume odor which is enough that it wakes me up at night if my cat hops up on the bed after having used the litter box. The smell is all over her fur, not just on her feet. This stench is the reason for the three stars, if the company states that this is unscented letter, then it really ought to be unscented! I'm continuing to use it for now, because I had ordered a fair amount of itbut I am definitely looking into brands that do not lie on their packaging.

I’ve been using this litter for a long time. 2 of the last three shipments I received are “different” than it’s always been. It smells scented and it’s much finer texture than what I’m used to. The great thing about this litter used to be that it was unscented yet it absorbed odor. Not anymore! The first bad batch I got had the “different” internal packaging not displaying the fresh step name so I thought perhaps a packaging error at the manufacturer. Just got my second bad batch of low quality perfumed unscented litter. I need to find another brand that is worth the cost.
