This product stained my solid white cat’s paws blue. Do I need to be worried? Can you confirm this product is nontoxic if he licks his now blue paws? I ordered cat litter not a technicolor cat?!?

Is the crystals suppose to absorb the pee? Do I have to scoop out the pee also?

Answer by ChewyApr 22, 2018
The Fresh Step Crystals quickly absorb moisture including urine. It's a non-clumping litter so it's best to change the litter box in 20- 30 days.

the urine builds up at bottom of litter pan - is there something i can do to eliminate this as when changing it out the fumes are pretty intense.

Answer by ChewyMay 06, 2019
It is recommended to scoop the feces out at least daily and stir the litter to distribute the silica to absorb the urine. When you notice the crystals are unable to absorb any more, it is time to empty out the entire box, clean it, dry it, and add fresh litter.

Not AS Heavy as regular litter

The FRESH STEP CRYSTALS CAT LITTER weighs a lot less than normal cat litter. It also has a different way of dealing with cat waste. Normal litter will clump around urine or feces, but FRESH STEP CRYSTALS doesn't clump at all. The crystals absorb the urine so you won't be dealing with large clumps when clearing the litter box. Likewise, feces don't clump but become dried out fossils that retain their shape and color and that's what you'll be fishing out when doing maintenance. The thing about the non-clumping, and it might be a drawback for some, since the urine doesn't clump you won't be able to remove just the urine thereby saving money by only adding fresh litter to the existing batch. Since the crystals all absorb the liquid, you won't be able to tell which ones are full until they become oversaturated, which is when they'll turn a darker shade of blue and look moist. But by then most of the crystals have absorbed the pee and you have to change out the used litter with a fresh batch. I have one cat so it's not that big a deal to me, but I find that I have to do a complete litter box cleaning every other month, which entails removing all the litter and then washing and disinfecting the litter box, drying it, and adding fresh litter.

I recently bought this litter because one of my friends with three cats recommended it. I was skeptical at first because I have only ever used clay and quite frankly I was sick of it. The clumping, the tracking, it was disgusting. But this litter is a life changer! No clumping! No tracking! No ammonia smells! All you have to do is pick up the poop, spread the litter around and it’s done! What used to be 5 min+ to clean is now easily done in under a minute! I highly recommend this litter! Never buying any other litter again!

Wow wow wow wow!! OK I'm not a review writer. But this stuff is amaze balls! The pee literally is absorbed in minutes and no smell.. You see that it's turned yellow for a few seconds, but when you stir the crystals around, it's gone, no smell, back to blue and white!.. We have 2 HUGE mega peeing cats, that we had to use 3 boxes to keep up with. Look at the pic.. You can see their old nasty cat box behind it and the floor.. (Don't judge house cleaning isn't my biggest priority and that's just the cat room anyway). No tracking, no litter stuck to fuzzy paws and tracked everywhere. My Norwegian forest's paws would be wet and muddy when he came out with clumping litter. So gross!!! This is amazing!! It pulls the moisture from the poop and in minutes looks like dinosaur poop... Been using this litter for over a week.. we'd have already done a total dump out by now! So pleased!!!

The best litter I have used thus far. Much less expensive than what I used to use and much better overall. Cleaning the box is a breeze! The clay litters, even the Arm & Hammer Slide, can still get things stuck on the scooper as well as the box. But this litter keeps everything much cleaner, I love it! I scoop my cat Jack’s box every day and just move around the litter after scooping and the urine literally disappears like magic! So less scooping required. Tracking happens but it is seriously very limited. Unlike the clay litters that would literally get everywhere! And I love how light it is! I used to have to dump out litter in the trash bag and then dump that in a box to take to the dumpster or else the weight would rip the bag. But now the trash bag holds the litter just fine when it’s time to be dumped! I’m never changing to another litter again. This stuff is the best!

The 1st thing I can say is I have an 18 year old cat and the clumping clay litters were starting to stick to her little paws. Once it hardened they don't want come out. The clay has to be cut out or removed by the groomer. On an older cat, that's just awful. She's just not as mobile as when she was younger. So I switched to this and we haven't had any trouble with her little paws, she's only 4 1/2 pounds. But as far as odor control it definitely falls way short of what I would hope for. But the trade off of it being easy on her and no dust it's well worth it. I use disposable litter boxes and throw the entire thing away once a week and that takes care of the odor.

It's been 40 years since I had a cat and my how things have changed. For the past year I've experimented with several types of litter and their different attributes. Fortunately, my cat adapted easily to change. I've landed on Fresh Step Crystals for now. It meets all my dust and odor requirements and exceeded my litter management expectations. I have 1 cat, a good depth covered litter box, and a 7-8 lb bag is the perfect full portion for the month. It does get cleaned and *fully stirred* at least *once a week*. Using too little product, and not stirring does lead to pee puddling from over saturation in the cat's favorite corners of the litter tray. Tray cleaning between litter changes is fairly easy with lysol wipes and I don't miss those clumps and in between litter adds or changes during the course of a month.

Probably the best Cat Litter you can Buy

So we've gone through many different litter types. At the end of them all, this has probably been the most effective in terms of odor control, low dust and ease to clean. Let me also say, there are many other crystal types, however with the exception of just one other that I won't mention here because I do highly recommend this one, all the others are just gimmicky and not as effective, especially if they're really cheap on price. Without making this a novel on cat litter, I'll just get straight to the point. It's easy to clean because it absorbs the urine and until the crystals become mushy, they're not yet spent. They'll change color of course, but until they're completely green and again, mushy, the crystals still have work left in them. It makes it easy to clean the urine that way. You scoop, look for clumpy crystals that have basically binded because they're mushy and you clean it. Poo is similar to others where the litter will stick to it. Hopefully your cat buries well because I feel like poo, no matter the litter, if it wasn't buried well, it's going to smell. Either way, you scoop just like you would any other and remove them. The key however with this litter is that you don't panic and think crystals that are yellow or a light green are completely shot and you need to dump all of them out. You simply have to stir the litter around and you're good. Again, wait until they're completely green and mush up, that's when the urine is ready for scooping to throw out. Dust is quite minimal and because of the size of the crystals, I think a lot of them do not stick to their paws as they jump out of the box, however it's not perfect at all. I have pads under my litter boxes that extend beyond to catch what they can because their paws will still tract crystals and they'll end up on your floor. Not really a negative because it happens with just about any litter. The best you can probably do is get mats around your box so they'll catch crystals as they leap out, then you can pour them back into the box. So yeah, I've learned that these crystals are frequently imitated, never duplicated.

I have 6 cats, 8 litter boxes. There were days I'd clean out the litterbox before going to work and I'd almost be knocked down by the smell when I got home. My vet had recommended crystal litter after one of my cats had a UTI. I finally made the switch and I can go almost a full month without even a hint of litterbox odor. Just be sure to remove the solid stuff and stir the remaining litter at least once a day. I've tried the finer crystals, but this seems to work best in terms of dust, tracking, and odor control. Plus, no more such to my long haired cat! If I'm on a budget, I'll mix this with a cheaper brand and it still does a good job.

I have been using another brand of crystal litter for my cat for years but it is not available from Chewy. But I do purchase her prescription food, her treats and toys and have been extremely satisfied with the service. That said, I noticed that Fresh Step Crystals were now available and decided to try it. My cat has had no problem changing brands. There is no odor ever with crystal litter and I recommend it for all cat owners. Just line the litter box with a large garbage bag, pour in the litter, and you can scoop some if you want but it is not necessary. When it turns yellow or is full of poop just pull out the bag and start over. So far Fresh Step is working just fine.

This litter is excellent! After using the regular litter for years (clay, clumping), I finally got tired of the dust it created. The crystals absorb the pee so there is no ammonia smell at all. It is easy to scoop out the poo and it doesn’t smell as long as the poo is covered up until you are able to scoop. No dust or residue. I usually change the litter out every 10-14 days (I have one cat), although I probably could go longer, if needed. I have had two different cats use this litter. My last cat used the old stuff for years but immediately adapted to this litter with no problems. I got a new cat after the death of my last one and he also had no trouble adapting from whatever he had used at the shelter. I cannot say that it decreases the litter tracking my cat causes, however. It is so easy to have Chewy deliver!
