I have 6 cats. They all have a nose and so do I. I've also been around the block buying MANY different brands and dealing with dust and finicky cats. This is my 2nd favorite cat litter because the A&H clumps better. However a couple of my cats prefer this one. The Fresh Step has such a nice pleasing scent, but not overwhelming. It clumps amazingly. If you were to walk into my house, you would never even know I had cats if it weren't for the cat hair. No smell of ammonia or anything! Compared to A&H though it sticks to the bottom of my litter boxes like cement. I also think it is more dusty. However I aim to please the cats, so since some prefer this kind over the A&H I have multiple boxes so they can choose the box they prefer. Box on the left has this brand. Of note, box in middle is plastic, other 2 boxes are stainless.

I have 4 cats. This liter hides the odors, clumps better than others and has low dust. It’s been easy to clean as well. I learned more about the descriptions. Scoop able is the key. Clumping has big granules. I also occasionally use a little of the arm & hammer litter deodorizer. It doesn’t stop the clumping power of the liter. I’ve tried several types of brands through the years. This one worth the cost! Fresh Step also has rewards and offers useful gifts.

As a cat consultant I often recommend an unscented litter, because cats are very sensitive to smell, especially in their litter boxes. I had my reservations when trying this litter out. So I set it up just like I tell my clients. One box with one litter and the other box with the new litter. Much to my surprise the cats consistently picked the Fresh Step box! Another advantage is the scent is not overpowering like the 'scented' litters of the past. This litter is paw activated and the scent is released only when the cat scratches in the box. By the end of the week ...all 4 cats were trying to use the same litter box! I had to set up an extra box with the Fresh Step litter in it.

Wish the Gain scented Fresh Step came in other packaging from chewy. Hate the 42lb bag. It’s too heavy to carry through the house when needing to add litter to multiple cat boxes. Handle is useless and stretches out, has broken on me before, even it can’t support the weight. Additionally, the opening is not as wide as it looks therefore it is challenging to fill a cup or a scooper from within the bag. When I pick it up to pour the litter out, hence the weight and handle issue again, it comes out quickly and litter goes everywhere because it’s so heavy and hard to maneuver. Just my experience though. I do keep buying it because of the cost/amount of product (I have 3 cats), but complain every time I have to use it.

We have 9 indoor cats and have been using fresh step religiously for 14 years. It has always clumped well, kept the odor at bay, and never bothered the cats. As you may imagine, with 9 cats we have several litter boxes and go through a lot of litter. Over the last 6 months the litter has become increasingly dustier. The cats always smell like the litter, it bothers our sinuses every time we scoop the boxes, our furniture has a layer of dust from the litter that it didn’t have before. We are now looking to change litter after these 14 years which is something we never imagined doing.

As someone who uses mostly unscented cat litters, I was hesitant to try a scented cat litter, but do enjoy the scent of Gain. The scent is light and pleasant, the litter is easy to scoop, and there is less tracking and ammonia smell than with other litters I have tried. But would the cats like it or would they find the scent too strong? After 4 days of using this litter alongside the unscented litter, the cats used this Fresh Step with Gain litter more than the old one even when I moved the boxes around! The scent is nice and not overpowering. Its great for my small condo. Will use again!

When this heavy, 42 pound box arrives at my front door, I open the box right then and there. Yes. Outside on my doorstep. It is just so much easier for me to carry the individual 11 pound bags. The product itself is my favorite of the clumping litters. If anyone reading this is having trouble with litter sticking to the bottom of the box, or has been told their house smelled of ammonia, I encourage you to be more generous when you add litter. Though he digs to his heart's content, my kitty has never seen the bottom of his litter box. Clumps never stick or break up. (We scoop and sift at least 2x a day.) Plus, I like the smell of Gain.

Best I've Found

I've tried so many litters having 3 Cats. I've even tried wood pellets. This blows everything out of the park. I vacation a LOT. With other litters I've come home after only 3 days away and my house reeks of cat urine from other litters. I had a house sitter and they are cleaning the litter just fine. I bought 2 tubs of this litter, was gone for a month, and I came back expecting my house to reek and anticipated cleaning around the litter box with ammonia....it didn't smell at all. My house smelled clean. I loved it. Oh, and my sitter had JUST opened the 2nd box of litter. So, 1 box lasted a month with 3 Cats and now a kitten. The ONLY thing I wish this brand did was package their litter in large plastic tubs. That, however, is not a reason to switch brands. This litter hasn't changed their formula like other brands have while also increasing prices. There isn't anything better on the market. When my female had her kitten, they say clumping litter can possibly harm kittens in mother carries it back while nursing, and I didn't worry about this litter with her.

I’ve never had a cat who turned their nose to this litter. I usually get the large bags and refill my pail. I did not realize I got the 42lb pre-portioned packs, but I’m pleasantly surprised with them. It comes with 6 bags, all perfectly portioned for a full, fresh litter box. This option could be good if you have multiple litter boxes around the house, have mobility issues. I could also see these packs being great for donations or care packages. But overall a large bag dumped into a pail is fine for me (less waste and storage)! Anyways, the litter is good. Don’t use for enclosed litter boxes and clean it everyday. The box say up to 10 days and that’s usually the life of them. 10 or 12 days depending on how to keep up with it and your cats needs. It clumps well but I have noticed that sometimes it breaks for the pee, which can be a stink bomb and causes the entire load to be bad. But that is. Given
