I adopted a brother and sister last year as puppies and it’s been amazing to watch their personalities develop. Doug is super calm and observant, while Carrie turned out to be a nonstop ball of nervous energy. As she got older, her anxious and hyper behavior became a bit overwhelming and not just for me but even for Doug! After discussing it with our vet, we decided to try Fluoxetine for Carrie and I’m glad we did. It hasn’t changed who she is at her core. She’s still our energetic girl, but it has helped take the edge off her anxiety. She’s more manageable and more relaxed. It's like she’s finally able to come down to Doug’s level a bit and just breathe. Definitely recommend considering it if you’re dealing with a nervous, high strung pup like Carrie!

My Boo developed severe noise and stranger based fear at the age if 3. She was terrified of everything and was self harming, chewing on her foot. Once we went on this (paired with Gabapentin) she stopped shaking all the time and learned to relax again. She passed away in July but she was given 4 years or calm with the help of this medication. If you have a baby that is scared of the world and shaking, crying all the time ask their vet about this medication to help them.

The fluoxetine was Sadie's prescription. She passed away last Thursday but she was on it for most of the seven years I had her. It was part of a regimen her vet put together to help her calm down, to east her anxiety. She hadn't had a good life the first ten years and had issues when I got her. Her Chewy medications helped both of us so much. Gosh, how I miss her!

Separation anxiety was getting worse and worse for our 13-year old Australian Sheppard mix, and she was starting to destroy the house. Trazadone helped a little, but wasn't predictable and has side effects. After about 3-4 weeks on Fluoxetine she became so sweet, so mellow, and so well behaved. This hasn't only made our dog "Happy" again, it's given peace to the whole family and allowed us freedom with no more worries! I HIGHLY recommend this for anxious dogs.

This has helped my anxious Labrador - takes time to find right dose.

After working with a trainer and behaviorist, both suggested starting my young Lab on a low dose of something like fluoxetine with the goal of it allowing him to be more receptive to behavioral training. His anxiety and reactivity was so bad that as smart as he is, he couldn't even be in puppy training class and I was crushed to see him suffering and so stressed. We started him on 10mg and he is currently on 20mg per day, which needs to be increased based on the dosing recommendations that go by body weight (he is now 61 lbs). Anyway, this did take a good 4-5 weeks to kick in, but once it kicked in I can confirm that it helped with his nervous panting, nervous drooling and paw-licking, and his barking at the slightest of sounds. We will likely increase his dose to 40mg per day to match his current weight because at his current low dose, he's still extremely frantic and fear reactive when he's leashed and sees any dogs on our walks. The behaviorist feels that the higher dose will allow him to be more receptive to training and addressing his leash reactivity and major fear. No negative side effects for him, and I mention that because he is prone to belly issues. Putting him on meds was not an easy decision and we tried sooo many other things first (ThunderShirt, CBD, acupuncture, music, essential oils, private training, even Chinese herbs that our vet, licensed in Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, thought would help. The fluoxetine is one "tool in the toolbox" as we work to train him out of his anxiety and teach him appropriate coping behaviors. As we work with a behaviorist to de-sensitize and counter-condition his responses to stimuli, this medication helps him go from 200% frenzied to maybe 85% frenzied, so his training sessions are actually productive. The capsules are small enough that I can squish them into a pill pocket or a little piece of soft dog fool roll. LASTLY: people, please stop giving a product a low rating because (1) it arrived late (2) you didn't know how to use a website to add 30 capsules to your order. Those low product ratings have nothing to do with the efficacy/quality of a product and are misleading to pet parents who actually read reviews to make important purchases.

My golden doodle is 6 years old and he was very nervous, always whined, separation anxiety to the max. No matter what the circumstances Kody was a mess! We went on vacation for a week two summers ago and my stepson who lived with us at the time, took care of Kody. Kody was so anxious that he was vomiting and diarrhea for 4 days because we were not there. What a mess! He was like this when we took him for walks too. I hated seeing him get so upset. My vet started him on a low dose of Prozac and we saw a little improvement. She then upped the dose to 60mg a day and what a difference! Wow!! He is calmer, he doesn’t get sick when we leave him, he is not whining, panting or pacing the floor. Such a happy doodle now or we are happier parents. He is such a sweet boy and I am so happy that Prozac is helping him! Happy dog, happy life!

Your mileage may vary...

My anxious girl was on Clomicalm for over a year but it wasn't really helping with her separation anxiety so after consulting with my vet we decided to give this

My anxious girl was on Clomicalm for over a year but it wasn't really helping with her separation anxiety so after consulting with my vet we decided to give this generic version of Reconcile (brand name of doggy Prozac) a try. We had to do a wash out period after stopping the Clomicalm and beginning the Fluoxetine and she did well during that time. She's always been a picky eater but unfortunately the Fluoxetine really made that much worse. She was on it for 11 days and her appetite gradually declined until she would no longer eat anything that I offered her except some boiled chicken and rice. She was also fairly lethargic. My vet said some dogs are just very sensitive to the effects and are overly sedated by it and agreed that it wasn't the right med for her. We were advised to wean off the Fluoxetine and back onto the Clomicalm. I've given a neutral rating because this could very well work for many dogs, but I wanted to share our experience because it might not work for all dogs and that's ok. I would recommend to always work with your vet and don't discontinue any meds abruptly.
