Can you start a colony with these roaches?

What is the packaging like? Are they in a plastic cup? Thrown in a cardboard box so they climb out the second you open it? Is it different based on how many you order?

Answer by ChewyJul 08, 2025
Depending on the size and quantity of roaches ordered, they may come in an 8-oz deli cup, a 16-oz deli cup, or a variety of box sizes. The only quantities that come in deli cups are Small 50ct, Small 100ct, Medium 50ct, and Medium 100ct. Anything more than 100 Small or Medium will come in a box. All counts of Large dubia roaches come in boxes. The boxes will likely be one of the two shown in the included picture. The top box is approximately 6.25" x 6.25" x 6.25" and the bottom box is approximately 12" x 6" x 6". If customers prefer to have the dubias contained in deli cups, they need to order the desired amount of either the Small or Medium roaches in a 50 or 100-count and the manufacturer will pack them into the appropriate-sized outer box.

How big are they?

Answer by ChewyApr 19, 2025
These dubia roaches are available in small, medium, and large sizes. The small measures approximately 1/4 of an inch, the medium measures roughly 1/2 an inch, and the large are about 1 inch. See the product photos for more information.

Are there going to be male and female? I want a bulk order that will continue to breed.

Answer by ChewyJan 27, 2026
All dubia nymphs are a mix of male and female; they are not sexed.

I was unhappy to see that probably about 70% of the dubia roaches I received were dead upon arrival. If I wanted dead ones, I could buy freeze dried or canned for a fraction of the price. My guess is that they were dead due to the poor shipping packaging and the food that was rock-hard and grey- I think remains of carrots. The dubia roaches were shipped loose in a cardboard box with 2 cutouts covered by mesh. This made for difficult transfer to a storage container because they can crawl up and down on cardboard, unlike the plastic cups most sellers transport their insects in. Overall, my bearded dragon, leopard gecko, and I are disappointed.

Was disappointed that most of the roaches I purchased were dead. With the extreme heat these past weeks it’s been difficult to find live roaches in the stores (theirs were dead from delivery as well). I was hoping ordering them myself would be different but when my order arrived at least half the roaches were dead. I ordered 500 and barely had 100 or so live ones, which was expensive to pay. I had hoped they’d be packaged in a way to survive the heat but they were just in a linen bag that was in a box so most died from the heat. It would be nice if the company packaged them as the perishable food item that they are and added some type of cooling packs or something to the boxes. The whole point of spending more money on live roaches is for them to be alive.

I ordered some roaches and I did not like how they were delivered. They were in a zip tied bag and I had to dump them into my own personal container, so I was able to seal them for the next day. Usually, they already come in their own personal container with lid and air pockets. Also, it did not look like there was 50 bugs at all!! I am usually happy with my chewy purchases but not this purchase.

Most of my pet needs are met through chewy and the service is great but I cannot recommend live food through here, the entire experience was disappointing. I ordered a 100 count and a 50 count of dubia roaches on 12/19. The wrong tracking info was attached, I was able to get the correct one through customer service who brushed off my concerns (normally customer service is great) I final got my order delivered on 12/31 and received the 50 roaches and they were mostly alive so no complaints there other than it took forever. Instead of the 100 roaches I received a 100 count of soldier fly larvae which is not what I wanted, worth much less than I paid and won’t be as filling to the lizards.

I've ordered dubai roaches a few times and there's always something wrong with the order. Either the shipment is delayed and half or all of them are dead, or they're the wrong size. This last order came in a mesh bag instead of some sort of solid container? That made it really difficult to get the roaches out, and I ordered either medium or large roaches, but these were so tiny and there definitely want NOT 100 in there. I'm just always disappointed.

We ordered medium but got more of a mix of small and large. They seem to be dying too quickly. We keep them in a 40 gal breeder tank with a lot of darkness and we ensure to feed them regularly with veggies and gel water. Still it seems they are dying more quickly than with the other dealers we have bought from.

Quantity and quality

So not to mention it literally took 2 weeks to come. It definitely was not one hundred dubia roaches. Maybe a good 40 and a lot of them were dead.
