Questions & Answers

I see that the food is manufactured in Italy. From what country or countries do the ingredients come?

Answer by ChewyJul 27, 2018
The Free-Range Chicken and eggs used in this recipe are sourced from Italy. The proteins used in Farmina foods come only from certified farms that are carefully selected for their high-quality standards. Farmina only uses fresh human grade meat from the animal, never any meals or by-products. All of Farmina's protein sources consume GMO-free diets and are all hormone and antibiotic free.

Why does this food have to contain Fructooligosaccharides? A sweetener.

Answer by ChewyApr 23, 2018
While they can be used as a sweetener, that is not generally their purpose in cat food. In cat food, fructooligosaccharides are used as prebiotics; prebiotics feed beneficial microflora in the gut, theoretically improving gut health.

at what temperature is n&d dry food extruded and dehydrated at, and for how much time?

Answer by ChewyDec 12, 2019
This kibble is cooked in an extruder at temperatures between 170-180 degrees Fahrenheit for 55 seconds to 1 minute 45 seconds. Farmina uses a Twin-Screw Extrusion process (double screw extruder) that is mainly used in food production for humans such as pasta, biscuits, etc., unlike most pet food manufacturers. A twin screw extruder activates a mechanical process that ensures better gelatinization of starch by increasing the digestibility of ingredients by 20-25% when compared to single-screw systems. The result is a lower denaturing of nutrients and an increase in digestibility.

Is this OK for a Senior Diabetic cat?

Answer by ChewyMay 23, 2019
This is a low glycemic formula so it's a great option for pets that need a food that won't spike blood sugar. We encourage you to discuss this option with your veterinarian to ensure the best diet for your cats.

I have been feeding my 2 Ragdoll cats Farmina, and they thrive on it. Excellent check ups at the vets. One cat the female weighs 25 pounds but is big boned and vet says she is ok. I once received a bad bag of Farmina with food stuck together and over 1 year old. Chewy sent a return label and refunded the money. I contacted Farmina they were quick to reply asked for Batch and production number and investigated it. They responded that after the extruding process the kibble is sprayed with Herring oil to replinish vitamins etc and after sitting for 1 year in Chewys plant it had liquified under their temp conditions and stuck together. They also were willing to send me a free bag and set me up with a local pet food supplier with a discount plan also a detailed feeding plan based on my two cats breed etc, and nutrition plan for my 2 Ragdoll cats. I can't recommend Farmina highly enough. They gave a long detailed explanation of what possibly went wrong with that bag and their concern for any future purchases I may have any problems with. They ship from their plants from Italy, Sebia, Brazil and now are building a plant in Reidsville Nc. Distribution center starting in 2024. They asked for the name of the pet food store I buy Farmina from and are going to set up a discount plan for me to purchase Farmina from them. No other Pet food company in the USA has ever offered to do that for their customer. Also they have never had any recalls.

I've been buying this food for several years and like someone else mentioned I got a new bag and it was several different colors. It is usually 1 dark color. The size of it was so big some of them looked like dog food. I regret feeding it to my cats but I was out of food and did. Things seemed ok but last night one of my 4 cats got sick. He didn't throw up but he was so sick didn't move much. His ears got super hot and he started to hide. I obviously took the food away at that point. Was up with him all night. He's coming back to life now but this morning was still hiding under the bed. I called Chewy and of course as they always do they handled it beautifully with refunds a new bag. I also called Farmina. They seem to have good customer service I honestly thought they would say don't worry we changed the formula but they were also concerned. I emailed them all the information lot number etc. I think I'm switching foods bc how can I trust this now. It seems from research the change of factories from Italy to Serbia has caused problems. I have had bags from Serbia and it was fine but this one was not. It seems like a gamble and for the price I would think better quality control but it is what it is.

I have been buying this exact formula for over 10 years. I received this yesterday and it is NOT the same. Yes, it varies in kibble size and sometimes it’s “greasy,” and sometimes has white spots all over it. But this time I received a bag that has a whole different color kibble in it! I have NO IDEA what I am feeding them today. And I don’t have a spare bag, so it’s not like I can just toss it. Farmina is all they eat for over 10 years now. I am really hoping they don’t get sick from this food! And there were weird little white things in the box about the size of a grain of rice that I am REALLY hoping are some bizarre plastic that is in there for whatever reason. This is not what I have come to expect from Farmina or Chewy.

It is hard to introduce any new food into the diet of our two cats. We got a sample of this brand/flavor from a friend and gave it to them as treats. Both loved it. Since it is expensive and once I pour a full bowl as a main meal they tend to change their minds about its palatability I keep doling it out as a generous treat to replace the junky treats they have been addicted to. It has worked so far. I am fooling them into eating something healthy and high quality and the smallest bag of this goes far this way. I wish they had sample sizes to try other flavors but I am reluctant to pay $30 for a bag of new flavor that they may not like. (It is the chicken pomegranate we tried so far).

I wanted to feed my cat food that was closer to his natural carnivore diet. So many cat foods are loaded with grains and other fillers. I was impressed by the nutritional profile of N&D. He seems to like it and never leaves a crumb in his bowl. It may be coincidence but he hasn’t been hacking up hairballs very much since we switched him to N&D. So far I am super pleased with this cat food.

Love The Product And So Does The Cat! Bad Shipping Condition:(

I have been feeding my cat Nutrisource Pure Vita grain free cat food--which is an excellent product. However after some time, my cat had grown tired of the taste. I wanted to find a product just as good as Pure Vita that my cat would run to the bowl to eat. I was happy to find Farmina. She gobbled it up as soon as I poured the food into her dish! She has a sensitive stomach and I found zero problems with the food transition. This had been the first time I had ordered from Chewy. The price of Farmina was on the pricy side and is somewhat higher than the Pure Vita food. It is imported from Italy, so I'm assuming the price/shipping is factored in. I was not too thrilled about the condition of the package. The box the food was shipped in arrived in good condition. But I had noticed a small puncture in the bag of food. Which lead me to believe that product had been damaged BEFORE shipping. Since it is a small hole, I didn't care to go through the ordeal of returning the product etc especially since my cat's usual food had been running low. I taped up the puncture and hope the food is still fresh. She has no problem with eating it so I'm thinking it's still good. Because of this; I have to say bad business with Chewy! I would have not shipped a product in that condition or I would have least notified the customer and lowered the price of the damaged package! I had signed up for the auto shipment and I'm hoping that the next package would be in good condition or I'll be terminating my future orders. I have found another website with similar prices. But I have chosen to give Chewy one more try.

BEST DRY CAT FOOD!

Honestly, I didn’t even think of feeding this to my cat since he was content until I seen him multiple times stealing from my dogs bowls while they were eating!!!!!!

Honestly, I didn’t even think of feeding this to my cat since he was content until I seen him multiple times stealing from my dogs bowls while they were eating!!!!!! HE HAS NEVER DONE THIS OF 7 yrs OF HIS LIFE!! I finally decided to switch his food to his own “cat” version of Fermina and he is in LOVE!!! It’s amazing if you truly pay attention to your felines or animals needs in particular “likes” vs “needs”. After seeing the quality, freshness, and feel of this amazing kibble I can understand his sacrifice to get nipped by my Siberian Husky, Golden, and maltipoo who is the most snappy.. This food is extremely rich and quality is very different, so it must be transitioned slowly.

We were fans of Farmina for years & used to highly recommend it. Then the company began manufacturing in Serbia rather than Italy. This food made our cat very sick, throwing up & what I can only describe as neurological issues. We'd just opened a new bag and made the connection. Very rapidly changed her to another food--and, thankfully, she made a full recovery and is completely back to her usual self. There was a problem, also, with Farmina's lamb & blueberry, fish bones sticking out of the kibbles, multiple bags, multiple manufacture dates--the company knew and chose not to issue a recall. No recalls doesn't always equate good/safe, I've now learned. Please, if your beloved fur baby starts seeming "off" in any way after opening a new bag/can/pouch--even from a trusted company--listen to your instincts. Trusted companies can change. Farmina did.

Great cat food

No issues with transition, my cat loves it and it's very good food. Also, it's from Italy, they know how to make food in Italy!
