Will your test show if a dog is part coyote?

Answer by ChewyJun 14, 2018
The Embark Dog DNA Test Kit tests for over 200 dog breeds, even wolf, coyote, and village dog ancestry. You can find a full list of breeds on the manufacturer's website.

Is MDR1 included in this test?

Answer by ChewyMar 01, 2018
The MDR1 Test is included.

My four dogs (and whatever foster dogs we have at the time) all drink from the same two water bowls. (They are BIG pots). Will the potential mixing of saliva from the water affect the results? Or, if is, for how long before the test should I withhold water?

Answer by ChewyDec 23, 2019
We recommend waiting at least an hour after the pup has eaten, shared a water bowl, or shared a toy with another dog before swabbing, in order to ensure that the sample is not contaminated. Additionally, we advise separating the dogs during this time.

I adopted a pup in January of this year from a rescue shelter. The pup was listed as a beagle mix, but many people said they didn’t see the beagle in him, but thought he looked more like a lab. I originally was not planning to have his DNA tested, but then I saw that I had an option to have his DNA and his susceptibility to any potential health issues tested as well. So I decided to get a kit and send in a sample for testing. I had thought there may be a bit of Border Collie in the little guy (named Otter), and possibly some lab, but not sure what else I thought. I was just glad he seemed healthy and seemed to like me. Got the results of his testing yesterday. He’s 62.5% beagle, then a mix of 5 other breeds. The most interesting results were that I was correct about Otter having some Border Collie, and it was even more interesting that he hasn’t got any Labrador DNA. But the best part is, he still loves me!

I was concerned that our pup was going to have nothing to do with the swabbing but she did great. We did it just before bedtime she had already settled down for the day. The kit gave very easy instructions to follow and included the return envelope. We continued to receive updates while her sample was being reviewed. We were convinced our rescue was going to come back with several breeds but she only came back with 2, Labrador (70%) and Cane Corso. We also received information on a condition that we should bring up with our vet which we would not have otherwise known about so we are very thankful that we can address this before it becomes an issue for her. I definitely recommend this product.

I got this for my sister to genetically test her rescue dog that she just adopted from a local shelter. She used an off-brand service that listed the breeds by working class group instead of the actual breeds that make up the dog I have always used Embark to genetically test my rescue dogs so decided to surprise her and sent this directly to her house. I accidentally sent it to my house, but the chewy rep was very helpful and corrected my mistake so that it was able to be mailed to her house directly. Embark received her swab and hopefully in a few weeks will know what breeds make up her dog Lucky.

I bought the breed and health test to get an idea of what my dog was mixed with and what he might be allergic to. The description says it’ll provide you with the risk for allergies. Guess I didn’t realize that meant giving a percent chance of developing a type of allergy instead of breaking down what allergens specifically. Posting to give awareness for anyone else buying for this purpose.

We did the test on our mixed breed shelter puppy. After having a dog with health issues previous to the new puppy we wanted to be prepared for what was to come. They gave us her breed information breakdown, traits and details from her dna makeup. The process took about 5 weeks total from test to results. They also gave us her very important health concerns that based on her DNA are a certain thing. After sharing with her vet we are now ready and know what to look for when changes happen. Note: You should purchase health insurance for your pet before doing this test if you plan to so they will cover any conditions that are revealed by the test, otherwise they are preexisting conditions not covered.

Come for the breed breakdown, stay for the health info

I recently brought home a Border Collie-looking dog, and wanted to do a DNA test mostly for the health information I knew it would give me. I had used Embark for Breeders on another dog, that one a purebred, really solely for the information about whether he might be a carrier for this or that genetic condition. With my current dog, the breed breakdown was interesting to me, to the degree you can rely on it, but what I really wanted to know was whether she carried a couple of herding-dog-specific genes that I would NEED to know in order to ensure she received appropriate vet care throughout her life. IT is reassuring to know she is clear of all the things I was concerned about. Anyway-just putting in a plug for the actual, potentially life-saving, health info you get with the more expensive test. In the long run, that info is going to count infinitely more than what your dog’s breed makeup is.

I Cancelled test when it wasn’t totally finished

I wanted to get a DNA test on my almost 12 year old dog. Jersey had previously had a DNA 11 years ago that was totally wrong. I also was looking for any health issues to be aware of. Our dear Jersey collapse two weeks ago and she could not be saved. A slim, trim and active dog her whole life. Jersey had had a complete physical with blood work 2 1/2 weeks prior and she was in perfect condition. On the day we put her down she collapsed and the veterinarian found blood in her stomach and a growth by her spleen. What makes this even harder is we had to put our 13 year old dog Minty down last December. So I am sure this DNA test would have been insightful in many ways. I contacted EmBark and they sent me a replacement kit that of course I no longer need. I passed it along. Much sadness in our home.

We recently got a rescue and hand many questions of what he was mixed with. This test was easy to do. It took about 3 weeks to get results back, but it provided so much information! We got a breakdown of all he was mixed with and health history based off his results. The company did a great job explaining all the information. Another plus we didn't expect was getting to see other dogs he shared DNA with!

We rescued our super mutt from the local shelter and they said he was some type of shepherd. We did the Embark test for both his breed and health since he came from the streets so we know nothing of his background. Turns out, NO SHEPHERD! He is 25% Siberian Husky (which makes sense with his talking and sassy barks), 20% Coonhound, 15% Supermutt, and 5 other breeds. He did have two items noted on his health eval that I will share with our vet. I love our dog Ziggy and it was great to have this additional information about him. We are now able to give him a better, more enriched life, knowing some of his background.
