Instructions

Your Dog’s Story Starts with a Swab

Embark DNA tests use a cheek swab to provide information about breed ancestry, genetic health conditions, and physical traits. Results include breed identification across hundreds of breeds and ancestry information spanning multiple generations.

Know the Risks Before They’re Problems

The test screens for a wide range of genetic health conditions, including inherited traits and sensitivities. Results are designed to provide information that can be shared with a veterinarian.

Follow the Family Tree, Branch by Branch

Ancestry reports provide information about a dog’s lineage across multiple generations, including breed background and geographic ancestry insights.

Meet Your Dog’s Family

The Relative Finder feature is designed to identify potential genetic matches among tested dogs, allowing owners to view related profiles when available.

About Embark

Questions & Answers

34 Customer Questions

How well does this work to breakdown mixed breeds with no purebred relatives? Does it break down into actual breeds or just type? What percentage of DNA for a specific breed does a dog need for it to register?

Answer by ChewyApr 12, 2020
This DNA test kit is able to trace back 3 generations. Please click on the attached photo for a visual reference of test examples. To locate all current breeds that may be identified, please visit the manufacturer site at https://embarkvet.com/resources/dog-breeds/

Is this a one time fee or do you have to send payment also when you send the test in?

Answer by ChewyMar 18, 2020
Once you purchase the kit, simply swab the inside of your dog's mouth, activate your kit, and send the sample in a prepaid envelope to the company's lab.

I have a wolf hybrid that I believe is at least 50% wolf, will this test be able to tell me what else he has and how much wolf?

Answer by ChewyOct 25, 2021
This test can detect wolf ancestry as well as over 350 other dog breeds that may be present.

Can this test help with figuring out skin conditions your dog has?

Answer by ChewyDec 23, 2020
While Embark can detect over 190 genetic variants associated with increased disease risk, they cannot provide medical diagnoses. You should talk to your vet if you are worried about specific medical conditions in your dog.

Skeptical but impressed and intrigued with the results. This test had better ratings than the others and was also on sale which peaked my curiosity. I wasn’t sure if my rottie was legit or not so I decided on this test. While not purebred, the results came back with some answers to my questions. It only took about 3 weeks if that for my results and I got updated every step of the way. I’m happy with the results received as I had my doubts he was a full rottie (don’t tell him). You can set up a profile online for all to see and even see other dogs that share DNA. Overall, satisfied with this purchase and would recommend.

Got my girl DNA tested because I was curious to know a bit more about her. Her results were so interesting and unexpected! I would have never thought of American Eskimo Dog being a possibility. I like that you can find relatives, too. I doubt I’ll find anyone super closely related to her but even her more distant relatives are cool to see.

Romeo adopted us at Animal Services and his pedigree questions were a topic of discussion for weeks. Everyone had a different opinion, from Poodle to Bichon to Maltese; we could not agree. We decided to take a DNA test and chose Embark because my daughter had experience with this brand. The process was simple, the hardest part was waiting for the results. It was great, especially because I was (mostly) right. This little prince’s pedigree is: Shitzhu, Poodle, Pomeranian (!) Bichon and Maltese. He thinks he’s human. Btw he was found as a stray roaming the streets. Now, thanks to Embark, we learned he has DNA relatives nearby!

I adopted my sweet little dog from a rescue this past summer. He looks like a Chihuahua, but I knew he was mixed because his fur is thicker and fluffier than pure Chi's and he has a tail like a fox. My best guess was that he was mixed with Corgi or some kind of Terrier. My curiosity got the best of me and I ordered the Embark breed ID test. First of all, the results came back much sooner than expected (after they received my sample I got an email saying my results were expected the end of November, and they were ready on November 5th)! The results show that my Dusty is 43% Chihuahua, which seems just about right. Surprisingly, it shows his next most prominent breed is Shih Tzu, followed by Rat Terrier and small Poodle. Fascinating! What I really loved, and what I didn't know was included with the service when I ordered it, is that you can connect with other Embark users whose dogs are related to yours based on DNA! I've done human DNA tests and have found my own relatives that way, it was so much fun to see that Dusty has a couple of close cousins registered on Embark! The interface of their website is slightly confusing and could use improvement to make it more user friendly. I had to go to the help pages to figure out how to upload a photo, and I'm pretty tech-savvy. I'm sure they'll tweak that as time goes on. Overall I'm very happy with this kit and it was worth the money.

When you do the test they have you add a photo and then they have you answer questions, one being basically your breed guesses. I believe they may get partial results that are real but I think they use the photos and people's guesses to fill in the blanks. I did not give my guesses and did not post a photo cause I was wary of why they would ask for all that. I put their name and which gender and that was it. The results I got were so wildly off it's ridiculous. They sent me a video about how a Chihuahua and a poodle can make a dog that looks like a terrier and that is true. BUT telling me a dog with large parts poodle, bichon, and

Bought this item with the excitement of finding more out about our pup. The item arrived, but had no fluid in the vial. I have been trying to get Embark to replace or refund. I sent them pictures proving that the item was incorrect, can’t seem to get a response back from them about how to proceed. I feel like I just wasted $110.

Ever since I got my puppy, I've wanted to know how much of what I was told about his parents were true (and also wanted proof that he's not a German Shepherd bc everyone on the street thinks he is solely based on some of his coloring, you'd think the curly tail would give it away but no). I had planned on waiting a bit to do a test when my friends surprised me with this test as a "belated baby shower" gift. My little guy ended up being even more Norwegian Elkhound than I thought (almost half!) and did actually have one of the terriers and (American) bulldog that I had been told, but instead of Chihuahua, he's nearly a quarter Pomeranian! He's also apparently small parts Silky and Yorkshire Terriers, which was a surprise. I had so much fun with his test that I opted for the health and trait upgrade and it was relief that he was cleared of nearly everything and the rest I can send to my vet to keep an eye on. Highly recommend!!

I paid for Embark testing twice for the same dog, six months apart, after questioning the accuracy and completeness of the first result. Embark’s website lists an estimated turnaround time of over two weeks. The second test returned within two days, strongly indicating that a prior genotype already in their system was reused rather than independently reanalyzed. This was not disclosed. When I requested either a refund or a true retest, both were denied. Customer service instead defaulted to the claim that “the DNA doesn’t lie,” a statement that reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of genetic interpretation. DNA does not interpret itself. Breed assignments are statistical models with known limitations. My dog expresses a true double coat, including undercoat and feathering. Neither pit bull type dogs nor Shar pei possess the genetic architecture to produce this phenotype. This genotype phenotype conflict warranted reassessment. It was dismissed. If your goal is vague population clustering presented as unquestionable fact, this product may suffice. If you expect scientific rigor, transparency, or accountability when results conflict with observable genetics, this service fails. Embark substitutes confidence for evidence. That is branding, not science.
