I have 2 cats, one with symptoms and one without. They often eat each others’ food. Is there any risk if my healthy cat eats this too?

Answer by SpaceflightmarieMay 25, 2026
As a 20+ year medical foster for Shelter kitties w URI, in my experience this paste is good for all kitties in the household when one is symptomatic, since it may help boost the healthy kitty’s resistance and prevent them developing symptoms. It is not “medicine”. I don’t see a downside to giving this to any other kitties nearby.

Is this good for feline herpes?

Answer by ChewyNov 22, 2018
L-lysine is often used to help with various ailments, including viral infections and feline herpes virus. L-lysine has been shown to reduce the severity and the duration of the feline herpes virus. It halts the replication of the virus by interfering with another amino acid called arginine, which the virus needs in order to replicate.

My girl is picky and won’t even eat wet food, but loves both this Duralactin as well as Felisyl brand flavored lysine gel. The former probably has more product and is closer to 20$, while the Duralactin is half that and also has added omegas and other nutrition. So I give both interchangeably, opting for felisyl one day, Duralactin the next. My cat was a feral 6month old when I found her and she has feline leukemia. Lysine helps keep her immune system strong and prevent any illness or infection that could become serious for her. Lysine also helps cats with other diseases and illnesses, and is especially good at treating and preventing ocular (eye) issues such as conjunctivitis. It helps with colds, allergies, and flu, and has also long been a staple to prevent and treat feline herpes flare ups, though there has been conflicting research more recently on that last one. All in all, lysine is a great supplement for the majority of cats and the flavored kinds are FAR easier to give than the powdered or pill versions. For my girl, this is a favorite treat. For me, it is peace of mind.

It truly helps keep his feline herpes under control, which he has had since we rescued him at one years old. It took us a couple years of going to the vet to figure out what it was, but this supplement makes a huge difference. We give it to him once every morning, and if he starts to have an outbreak, I will give it to him twice a day, and it keeps it under control. He is now 16 years old.

I bought this for my cat that has chronic sinus issues that don't go away. She ends up at the vet 2 to 3 times a year for antibiotics due to the issue turning into infections. The vet stated to give her lysine but I could not find any treats she would eat so I thought I'd try this. She absolutely won't take it on her own but I figured out a way to give it to her. I took a 3ml syringe, remove the plunger, fill in the dose, put the plunger back in and then squirt the gel into her mouth. She doesn't like it but she needs it. You do need to allow time for it to start working though. You may need 2 to 3 full tubes before you see effects since it is a natural remedy and natural remedies take time. She now sneezes less often and is quite a bit less congested.

For me personally, this really helped my 8ish week kitten. She had really bad eye and nose drainage with sneezing. We gave him this twice a day for a little over a week and noticed a huge change. No more drainage! His eyes have cleared up so well! I wish I had a before pic!

I have been supplementing my Exotic Shorthair cats diet with Lysine for its immune supporting and overall health benefits. I was using a powdered form, which I would have to dissolve in a broth, and then mix in with wet food. Not only inconvenient but if it wasn’t dissolved properly the cats wouldn’t touch it. This product is amazing! My squishy-nosed babies eagerly gobble this supplement right from the syringe AND I am assured that each cat receives their proper dosage! Total win-win here!!! I just added 2 syringes to my Autoship so thank you Chewy! Much love!

DOM means date of manufacture!

This stuff always works wonders! For those of you that think you received expired product, the DOM (date) is the date it was manufactured, NOT the expiration date

My 9 yr old male has always tended to have a dirty face - eyes nose and ears. I’m constantly cleaning his face & he hates it. I started him on different types of lysine and noticed improvement in about a week of reg use. He doesn’t “get” treats so has to be something I can sneak in his wet food daily. This type has been the easiest to administer and he gobbles it up. I use a low dose once/day and it’s doing the trick. His coat has also MAJORLY improved to silky soft. If he gets a kitty cold I’ll up his dose/frequency as needed. So far so good!

I had problems with the manufacturing dates. My cats wouldn’t touch Dutalactin that was manufactured 10/18. It was dark color and a weird consistency unlike Duractin from previous shipments manufactured 11/18 which is light Carmel color . It took several shipments to get the 11/18 Duralactin. Chewy did it’s best to make the correction. Duralactin is a very good product especially for cats with eye and nose issues like my two hymilayan Persians.and is good for.preventative health. Our vet recommended it.

I have a 10 year old cat that has always struggled with chronic repertory issues, he takes antibiotics and it just comes back, he's even had bad teeth removed to help with that was contributing to the sinus buildup. We thought he could finally breath with struggle that was short-lived. He doesn't eat wet cat food so I was hesitant on him liking this but he kicks it straight from the tube, giving a few weeks to see if this works as he has had this condition all his life and everything else fails. I am confident this will help

I know it's not a cure all, however it does seem to be helping with the coughing and sneezing. She's not doing it as much as she was. Have almost gone through the tube and will be ordering another.
