DentaLife ActivFresh Daily Oral Care Breath Control Adult Large Breed Dental Dog Treats, 21 count

My 7 year old Australian Shepherd, Goose, recently died with stomach cancer. While being diagnosed at UT Vet hospital in Knoxville, the vet asked if she had been exposed to ESTROGEN...over an extended period of time...to toxic levels. I was flabbergasted. While researching the treats and foods she ate on a daily basis we discovered that these Dental hygiene sticks contain a preservative know to cause cancer, especially stomach cancer in rodents. The preservatives BHT and BHA are synthetic and mimic ESTROGEN!! They are used to extend the shelf life. According to the package my dog should have been receiving 2 sticks daily. While she only received 1 per day for her dental hygiene her levels of estrogen were apparently high enough to alarm this vet to alarm me. Goose was so sick that she threw up her stomach lining!!! She may have saved her brother's life as we are now aware of the toxins Purina (and others) are putting in their dog foods and treats. Please be an advocate for your pet and limit/end their exposure to these toxins.

I did receive this item as a free sample for my pet. My first impression of course was the packaging which was pleasant to the eye (you can never lose putting a pup on the front!). Upon opening the bag (which of course my dog heard from the back of the house), the smell was fresh and at least for the dog, something to make her drool!. The snack was whisked away and quickly eaten. I didn’t notice a significant change to breathe (like not after a human brushing teeth/etc) but there was no bad breath, so I’ll take it as a plus. My pooch is about 50 lbs so I went with the large breed size and it seemed to work perfect for her. I would certainly purchase again since she really seemed to love them!

Do not give your dogs Purina DentaLife treats. They contain several preservatives and artificial ingredients, two (BHA and BHT) that are known carcinogens in humans and suspected to be carcinogens in dogs and one (sodium tripolyphosphate) that is known to cause stomach upset and kidney stones. The U.S. government has also listed sodium tripolyphosphate as a possible neurotoxin. This product should be taken off the market, but instead of doing the right thing, Purina denies that the chews are causing problems. My 70 lb. dog is going through a second night of nausea and distress in one week after having these treats for the first time because we didn't realize at first what was causing him to become ill. However, nothing else in his diet changed and he hasn't gotten into anything. A quick look at the ingredient list confirmed my suspicions. I only wish I had done that BEFORE I bought this product and gave it to my dog. Do not give these to your dog. Look for treats without a bunch of dangerous artificial ingredients and preservatives instead.

I received a free sample to try in exchange for my honest review. And I must honestly say, that my pup Theo absolutely loves these “treats”, and so do I. His breath often smells like his food (fish) all day long, and he is a kissing boy so he is always is our faces. After his first one, his breath had absolutely no smell at all!! He also has no build up, and isn’t bleeding when chewing his bones. I was amazed, and recommend to everyone. These come in different sizes for different sized pups, so it really is perfect!
