I have the original chuck it thrower, and if I'm not mistaken they had two different sizes and were tennis ball types, I need the larger size ball, think it's about 3-1/2" maybe 4" ,did they change over to the rubber ball? Is it more durable than the tennis ball types?

Answer by FidoApr 29, 2026
The rubber balls are much tougher than the tennis ball type that comes with the thrower.

I have a Doberman, should I get the large size?

Answer by ChewyAug 18, 2018
To find the best size for your dog, we recommend comparing the measurements of the ball to what you know your dog can manage. I've attached Chuckit!'s recommended sizing chart that includes the ball size coupled with breed size.

Love the Chuckit Ball

My GSD is ball obsessed! Tennis balls are toxic & fall apart. The CHUCKIT Ultra Rubber Ball is as tough as it gets! I only have to buy more because they get lost

My GSD is ball obsessed! Tennis balls are toxic & fall apart. The CHUCKIT Ultra Rubber Ball is as tough as it gets! I only have to buy more because they get lost. My GSD is a heavy chewer but these balls do not break down. She loves to keep one in her mouth while rolling a 2nd one around the house.

Tough enough even for a pitbull

Jasmine is a 75-pound pitbull, and she usually can destroy even a tennis ball within a day. Not these balls ... they bounce nicely and she loves chasing them ..

Our Labrador, Molly, loves these balls. She likes to hide them in the woods, then we beg her to go find them. She has a constant rotation of balls going and always needs one, so we ordered enough to last for - two years? We shall see Anyway the price was great with a free ball if you bought three - we bought 24.

So much better than your basic tennis ball.

Tennis balls. All dogs love them. Except. My dogs EAT them. They rip off the fuzz, which gets stuck in their teeth, resulting in that ridiculous tonguing, chewing “OMG what have I done” expression. Then they crush them, chew up the rubber casing and puke it up in the dining room. It’s always the dining room right?!? Never a TILE floor... And they water them. They drop them in the water bowl then my lap. They bring them in and drop them in the bathtub with me. Yuck. So I bought these. They’ve had them for two weeks. No fuzz in the teeth. No puke in the dining room. No nasty, smelly dripping ball in my lap. (Or the tub). They’ve held up, they don’t squeak, and they do everything else my dogs want a ball to do. They bounce, they’re squishy, and I’ll happily throw these 1,000 times. And if they get gross, I can wash them off easily. Buy one. Your dining room rug will thank you.

So I ordered a whole slew of toys for my dog Wally because he'd gone through all the ones I'd gotten him and Chewy has always been reliable. Well, I don't know if it was my choices, the quality of the companies or Chewy's options but boy oh boy did most not hold up, BUT THIS ONE? THIS ONE DID. 3/14 Wally loves balls and trying with his little half blind eyes to catch them but usually theyre dark blue and hard to see, so I was hoping the orange would help, and also its super tough looking, so maybe it'd hold up to his chewing. And it has! This is one of very few toys I got that actually held up. It has been relentless attacked and chewed on and doesn't show much damage at all! Very happy that I bought this one!

Favorite Ball!

One of my boxers plays with this ball all of the time. Normally toys don’t hold up to him, but for some reason this does. He prefers the large size ball.

Great for fetching!!

Great for fetching!! The medium is just a bit smaller than a tennis ball so that's our preferred fetch size. With the Chuck-It throwing stick it is a great system

Great for fetching!! The medium is just a bit smaller than a tennis ball so that's our preferred fetch size. With the Chuck-It throwing stick it is a great system. However, if you want them to last do not let doggie chew on them. They tend to separate along the seam first (where the two halves meet). We purchased this product specifically for chewing and are quite happy. Our Am Staff prefers rubber things with a bit of give for chewing -- a kong is too hard & tires are too easy. Last year she mastered chewing up the medium size balls. Granted, it took her seven months to figure out how to effectively "kill" the medium size, but each new one after that has "died" in a few hours. This large size kept her busy for a few weeks! She has just now managed to get the ball to separate along the seam line so it has another month or two of life before she finally shreds it to bits. We are happy with these results & that there is yet one more size should we need to challenge her further.

I wouldn’t call it an X-large ball but it’s great!

I have two 100lb German shepherds. one of them really loves balls so I wanted to find him a larger ball than the average sized tennis balls. Now this ball is bigger

I have two 100lb German shepherds. one of them really loves balls so I wanted to find him a larger ball than the average sized tennis balls. Now this ball is bigger than a tennis ball but I would say and XL is misleading, to me it’s more like a medium/large ball so I’d hate to see how small a small ball would actually be. Regardless this ball fits perfectly in his mouth and I don’t feel like he would choke on it so that’s a good thing I can let him play comfortably with it. We’ve had it two weeks and it’s held up nice so far.
